Visigoths vs Mall Goths proudly supports Kickstarter United's effort to unionize!

Visigoths vs. Mall Goths is a tabletop roleplaying game and dating sim about the conflicts and romances among the warriors who sacked ancient Rome and 20th century spooky teens, set in a shopping mall in a Los Angeles suburb in 1996. There are a lot of bisexuals.

The plot structure of Visigoths vs. Mall Goths resembles an open-world videogame RPG. Designed for either one-shot or campaign play, each adventure episode offers several quests that you may choose to pursue (or ignore), and the mall setting is packed with many strange retro marvels to discover. Or you can just replay the game over and over to kiss all the kissable clerks.

Also a LARPer-friendly introduction to tabletop.

Bonus: you can also use this setting and these supporting characters (NPCs) in other roleplaying games! Expand your universe with goths!

4-6 players plus a facilitator ("the Mallrat"). Strange sense of humor required!

Testimonials

"Thank you for giving the people what they want: shopping!"

- Alex Roberts, game designer of Starcrossed and For the Queen -

“Lucian packs a stupendous amount of pun-craft and mid-nineties queer whimsy into Visigoths vs Mall Goths. I found the worldbuilding to be evocative and charming, and the feelings-based combat a singular joy. This is a must-play for all goths and goths-at-heart.”

- Nell Raban, game designer of Home Again -

“The characters that populate this setting are so fun to embody as the GM!”

- Jim Crocker, owner and bookseller at Jim Likes Games; Eastern U.S. sales partner for Indie Press Revolution -

"VG vs MG combines everything I love: occult time travel, the '90s, and queer culture, with things I never knew I needed: an emo grudge tracker and a turf war that shouldn't really make sense but totally does. Lucian makes magic with his games always, and this is no exception."

- Hannah Shaffer, game designer of Damn the Man, Save the Music! -

"Your spooky teens better buckle up, and get your gay little hearts ready, this mall’s full of drama and I can’t wait to start diving in! An indulgent treat!"

- Taylor LaBresh, game designer of Descent Into Midnight -

"Some days, you’re in the mood for epic battles with squid-faced brain-eaters...and some days you wanna flirt with a dude wearing too much eyeliner in a cheese store named “A Feta Worse than Death.” Visigoths Vs. Mall Goths forces players to make meaning through small acts, to find adolescent joy and anguish by creating and pursuing the mundane agendas of teenage life in a suburban mall. Lucian has designed  a fun romp of a game that’s compelling for veteran roleplayers and casual gamers alike, employing comedy, nostalgia, and teenage drama to relive and reimagine a hilarious and drama-filled childhood."

- Sharang Biswas, Indiecade and IGDN winning designer of Feast and Verdure -

Inspiration

I grew up in Los Angeles and was a goth-clubbing, bisexual grunge-rock teen in the 90s.

My biggest design inspirations for Visigoths vs. Mall Goths were the videogames Earthbound, Dragon Age: Origins, Monster Prom, and The Sims 3. In tabletop roleplaying games, I learned a lot from Montsegur 1244, Witch: The Road to Lindesfarne, Shooting the Moon, Masks, and Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition

Imagine a surreal combo of The Craft, Empire Records, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Clueless.

I've been playtesting Visigoths vs. Mall Goths for over a year (including at multiple roleplaying games conventions), and I can't wait to share it with the world!

Characters

Visigoths: The Visigoths were the collection of nomadic tribes who sacked Rome in 410, soon settling in Gaul and later Spain. History remembers them as barbarians. Due to complications from time-travel, some of the Visigoths in this mall are glowing.

  •  Conqueror Visigoth: You would ride into battle and seize this mall, if only you had a horse.
  •  Charlatan Visigoth: Why should there be any difference between a meaningful religion and a well-crafted lie?
  •  Runecaster Visigoth: Mystic symbols transmute inert stones into instruments of your will.

Mall Goths: The gothic subculture in music and fashion began in the 1980s and was characterized by themes of darkness, tragic romance, and horror. Mainstream clothing companies capitalized on the movement in the 1990s, and goth clothing stores began to appear in shopping malls across the United States. Mall Goths were the suburban teens who shopped in these stores and spent most of their free time hanging out together in the mall.

  •  Theatre Tech Mall Goth: You’ve worked backstage at Rocky Horror Picture Show and you know the ropes.
  •  Witch Mall Goth: Your friends value your uncanny emotional intuition, but you’re not all lavender and crystals.
  •  Cyber Pet Mall Goth: Why just carry around a digital pet on a keychain when you can be that pet? (You’re basically a furry with a Tamagotchi aesthetic.)
The Mall
The game comes with this fancy map (in color & b/w printable versions) and a simpler b/w printable map for ease of use.
The game comes with this fancy map (in color & b/w printable versions) and a simpler b/w printable map for ease of use.

Here are some of the stores in the mall:

  • A Feta Worse Than Death (Dark mahogany coffins lie open, revealing an array of fine cheeses.)
  • Gerbil Essences (This California-cool hair salon is equipped with styling stations for humans and pets.)
  • Hail Satin (A demonic bed and bath store with black terrycloth curtains.)
  • Lemon Theodosius (Unfortunately, Visigoth milkshakes aren’t as popular as their Roman competition.)

...and many more!

I'm not a jealous game designer, feel free to also use this detailed mall setting and its supporting characters (NPCs) in games other than Visigoths vs. Mall Goths, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Monsterhearts, Starcrossed...the possibilities are endless!

What Can You Do in the Mall?

  • Talk to store clerks to get information!
  • Go shopping or shoplift!
  • Debate about music, fashion, or other cultural matters!
  • Fight!
  • Flirt, ask people on dates, or make out!
Rules

Rolling Dice

Players roll dice to resolve conflicts. If there’s no conflict, there’s no need to roll dice. There are no “simple skill checks” to perform difficult actions; you only roll-off against another player, a Mallrat-controlled character, or the mall itself. Always roll 2 6-sided dice. Whoever has the highest number succeeds and the other fails. On a tie, both players succeed and the situation escalates ridiculously or dramatically.

Embarrassing Traits

Embarrass yourself to help your friends seem cool in comparison! If you do something to draw attention to your embarrassing trait, you may offer another player a +3 bonus to their roll, but you must add “embarrassed” to your hurt feelings.

Hurt Feelings

Most games only track physical damage, but this game only tracks emotional damage. When your attack against an opponent is successful, you and your opponent both experience hurt feelings. Write a word describing how your character feels in the “hurt feelings” section of your character sheet. If your character sheet contains 2 or more hurt feelings, you are emotionally overwhelmed and can’t continue physically fighting (or use embarrassing traits) until you talk about your feelings with a friend.

Compete or Collaborate?

This game has “vs” in the title — does that mean it’s a player vs player competition? Sort of, but not really. Inside the fiction, the Visigoth and Mall Goth characters are typically enemies, and they may even battle, but the players aren’t actually competing to win the game. As a player, your goal is to tell a story together with your friends. The conflict between the characters is a plot device to help you tell an interesting story.

So even though there are two opposing teams, Visigoths vs. Mall Goths is a game where the ultimate goal is storytelling, not winning. Though your characters may have goals, your goal as players is to tell an interesting story together. Sometimes this may mean acting to your character’s advantage, but other times this may mean “playing to lose” in order to develop the personalities and plot arcs. What would your character do, even if you know better?

Can I still play if...?

Q: I don't like violence in games. Can I still play Visigoths vs. Mall Goths?

A: Yes! All problems in Visigoths vs. Mall Goths can be solved without violence. Decide together if you'd like to omit violence from your sessions.

Q: I don't like romance in games. Or kissing! Can I still play Visigoths vs. Mall Goths?

A: Yes! All adventure episodes in Visigoths vs. Mall Goths include plot hooks that are romance-free and kissing-free. Decide together if you'd like to omit romance and/or kissing from your sessions.

Q: I'm a game designer too, and my favorite way to interact with new games that I buy is to use their rules, procedures, and design patterns to make completely different games. Can I hack Visigoths vs. Mall Goths?

A: Yes! Game mechanics can't be copyrighted anyway, and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. (Visual images can be copyrighted though and remain the intellectual property of the artists.) If you support my work by pledging to this kickstarter, please let my work support your work! Since hacks of Apocalypse World are Powered by the Apocalypse, hacks of Blades in the Dark are Forged in the Dark, and hacks of For the Queen are Descended from the Queen, hacks of Visigoths vs. Mall Goths shall henceforth be known as Mauled by Goths.

Meet the Artists

Lucian Kahn (concept, writing, and game design) is the designer of the ghostly storytelling game Dead Friend: A Game of Necromancy and project director of the anthology You & I: Roleplaying Games for Two, both of which were nominated for 2019 Indie Groundbreakers Awards in the category of Most Innovative. He also designed the Prohibition-era lady bootlegger singing game Grandma's Drinking Song. He was a 200 Word RPG Challenge finalist in 2018 for Same Bat Time, Same Bat Mitzvah. Lucian is co-editor of an upcoming art games anthology to be published in 2020 by Pelgrane Press. He is trans and Jewish. He was the lead guitarist, singer, and songwriter for the klezmer-punk comedy band Schmekel. He is a gay-coded villain with a cat, and he is rumored to be the face of Doctor Claw. Follow him on twitter at @oh_theogony.

Robin Eisenberg (cover illustration) is a Los Angeles-based artist. Many of her drawings feature relatable alien women on their own in nature and outer space. She is heavily influenced by sci-fi and fantasy, as well as a love of food, road trips, plants, stars, and dogs of all kinds. Her projects include work with Vans, Thrasher, HBO, Fender, Netflix, Adult Swim, Vevo, and Adobe Creative Cloud, as well as directing and creating animated music videos.

Lluis Abadias Garcia (interior illustrations) is the artist for the Dungeons & Dragons 5e setting Lasers & Liches, also known as Retroverse. “I am a nerdy Spanish artist from Barcelona who really wants to bring back the colorful aesthetic from the 80s! Trying to put vibrant colors and detailed linework in every piece I make, heavily influenced by Saturday morning cartoons. Always been interested in the ttrpg landscape and I work with creators that bring representation and are inclusive in the games they create to make the game landscape a safe place for everyone to be themselves and have fun!”

Vee Hendro (graphic design) is a freelance RPG graphic designer and game creator. She is best known for her visual and game design work on Good Society: A Jane Austen RPG and Alas for the Awful Sea. Catch her on a bouldering wall, bushwalk or drooling over mechanical keyboards. She is one half of Storybrewers Roleplaying and can be found lurking online @Rocketeer_Vee.

Jonaya Kemper (adventure writing, sensitivity editing) is a game designer, narrative designer, black intersectional feminist, and Afrofuturist. Jonaya was the character lead, workshop designer, and runtime support for Forbidden History and the lead developer for 7th Sea’s Lands of Gold and Fire. Jonaya was also a Los Angeles goth.

Mabel Harper (adventure writing) is a musician, writer, and digital artist. When she's not creating the stuff of nightmares, she's making queer pop music as Don't do it, Neil. Or she might just be vegging out on her bed and watching anime with her cats.

Liz Gorinsky (adventure writing) has designed several analog games including "Lioness" (Indie Mix Tape), "See Me Now" (a Fastaval scenario with Sara Williamson), and "Goth Court" (with Jess Zimmerman, out from Bully Pulpit Press) and facilitates freeform live-action games with Larp Loft. By day, Liz runs a small speculative fiction publishing company called Erewhon Books and has published and edited science fiction fantasy for many years.

Maja Bäckvall (adventure writing) is an escaped academic and runologist-for-hire whose main claim to fame is the Old Norse in Civilization VI and most of the Old Norse and runes in God of War. While she has never been to LA, she did watch a lot of Beverly Hills 90210 in her formative years and thinks that must count for something.

Olivia Fields (map illustration) is an illustrator born, raised, and residing in Brooklyn, NY. Her specialties include fashionable figures, flowy linework, soft colors, and always being sleepy... You can follow her on Instagram and Twitter at @tncts or check out her website at ohfields.com

Jackson Tegu (map illustration): When not drawing rectilinear maps of malls, stadia, and other megastructures, Jackson publishes story games, larps, and rpgs constantly. Jackson is most commonly found in small cities, running games, dancing, and eating fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Via Jackson, discover games such as Morning, Danksgiving, the Monsterhearts Second Skins, Baba Zubi’s Missing Pet, You Again, Seven Skulls, etc, etc, infinity, forever. photographsoflightning.com patreon.com/jacksontegu

Lauren McManamon (editing, she/they) is a full-time ttrpg editor and designer, most known for her design work on Girl Underground and Final Girl: A Game of Love. As an editor, she has worked on nine ttrpg texts this year, including work for Good Society by the Storybrewers, the Great American Novel by Christopher Grey, and A Town Called Malice by Monkeyfun Studios. Lauren has also been the line editor on the Gauntlet's monthly zine Codex for 2 years—but most importantly, is she a mall goth or a Visigoth? As long as there's making out, she's not picky. She is a pansexual queer woman-person. Check them on Twitter at @thestraykiwi and www.thestraykiwi.com

Catherine Ramen (kickstarter video editing) wandered in from a Gothic novel and somehow got co-opted for this project. She is the author of Red Carnations on a Black Grave, a story game based on the Paris Commune of 1871, and Rovers, a light-hearted space opera romp. She is sure those strange thumps from the attic are nothing more scary than an ancient ghost or three. Find her on twitter at @AviatrixGames.

Fair Payment and Worker Solidarity

I've designed this game and this Kickstarter campaign around the idea that beautiful color artwork, excellent guest writers, inclusivity of contributors and content, and fair pay of the folks I commission, are all essential to the main product and shouldn't just be tacked on later as stretch goals. Payment of all guest writers exceeds the minimums set forth in the United (QT)POC Standard Requirements, and all visual artists have set their own rates based on complexity of work. For this reason, my total budget is a bit higher than some independent roleplaying game books, but I believe it's worth it.

I support Kickstarter workers' right to unionize. Kickstarter United is NOT calling for boycott, and the main original organizer has advised me to go forward with this campaign. I have written about these issues extensively on twitter. For more details, my open letter in support of unionizing Kickstarter workers is here.

Book Printing, Fulfillment, and Shipping

You will receive a BackerKit survey when the books are ready to ship, then you will be charged shipping and the books will be mailed to you.

Hardcovers

Success! All hardcover editions have been upgraded to an art book print run by Bookmobile. Bookmobile will also handle fulfillment.

(We are able to afford this through a combination of raising over $20,000 and having enough hardcover-reward pledges for a discount on bulk printing. Additional funds raised and additional hardcover orders continue to make this more affordable!)

Softcovers

Softcover books will be distributed through DriveThruRPG. Physical books will be produced via "premium color" Print On Demand. Premium color is the highest available DTRPG upgrade. DTRPG's premium color looks very good on the page at an affordable price point. (For a particularly vibrant example, check out Space Wurm vs. Moonicorn.)

International Shipping

International shipping is expensive, but still possible. It will likely be cheaper with the Print On Demand versions depending on where you live, because both Print On Demand options also have printing locations outside the USA. My distributor for the bespoke printing upgrade estimates around $26 shipping per hardcover for international orders.

If you’re outside the USA and order a physical book, I’ll give you a choice on a BackerKit survey to select the version you prefer.

Risks and challenges

I've self-published digital and print runs of my game books before (most notably Dead Friend: A Game of Necromancy, which is still in print and available at several brick and mortar stores and conventions) and I'm well connected in the indie tabletop gaming world. However, this is my first game design Kickstarter. To offset my inexperience with Kickstarter, I've consulted with several experienced Kickstarter-based games publishers to avoid common pitfalls in building my budget and deciding how to handle fulfillment.

The cost and work of warehousing books, shipping, and handling returns and mailing errors is a common problem, so I have eliminated this risk by doing my fulfillment as Print On Demand. If we reach the publishing upgrade to a bespoke publishing house, I will also be using their fulfillment services instead of doing it myself, which eliminates a lot of risk. Of course, any of these companies could have a delay.

There is always a possibility that shipping prices will change between now and shipping time. I've eliminated the risk that this Kickstarter's budget will no longer cover the shipping cost by charging shipping later with BackerKit.

I am deliberately NOT adding any stretch goals that require additional *time* to fulfill, to ensure that this Kickstarter's unexpected wild success won't delay the production and shipping of the game.

All of the writing and art for the book is already complete, except for the custom content from the high-level Kickstarter tiers (which has a firm due date), the editing, and the final layout. It's possible that editing or layout may take longer than estimated, or that the printer may need to adjust the printed versions after sending me the proofs, or other printing-related delays. Barring these problems, I expect that we will finish the book on time.

Some retailers who can vouch for my reliability and honesty in getting my game books to them include Twenty Sided Store and Indie Press Revolution,
