Hey friends and fans! We are trying something new for this fourth album. In the spirit of reaching as many friends and supporters as possible, we thought we'd bring our fundraising campaign directly to you electronically (and reward you with some really cool stuff for helping us out in the process). Historically we sent letters to a select group of fans and supporters and we were always delightfully surprised by, and grateful for, the generous donations we received for the first three albums. With so much love and encouragement we thought we would open it up to a wider audience.
The Backstory To This Album
A lot has happened since we recorded and distributed Slingshot Kid four years ago. It was met with great reviews from as far away as England and we performed on many stages.
My mama passed away just days before we were scheduled to go into the studio and record that album. As you can imagine, there was a heavy feeling going into that session but also a sense that she’d want us to get in there and make something great. And we did, including a song about Mama that enjoyed commercial radio play! Grandpa passed not too long after and more recently John’s older brother.
Amidst the pain and loss, life moves on – and so does the music. Since then, there have been emotionally challenging days as well as beautiful ones brimming with joy. We want to record this fourth album in honor of those who have gone before us with a revived sense of joy.
In the video we are hanging out in what we call the Owl House at the Pattie Farm where my family has lived for over three generations west of Gilroy in the Santa Cruz Mountains. To house his tractor and what he needed for the orchard, my grandfather originally built the Owl House over 45 years ago from recycled redwood lumber from a chicken farm down the road. I have so many fond memories of this place where I used to happily wander and explore as a toddler. And now we’ll use it to make music!
For this next album, we're brainstorming something new. We’d like to eliminate the distractions that often accompany recording projects such as distance, time constraints, and major studio commitments. Instead, we want to focus on the creative space where we’ll record this next album. We all feel right at home in the Owl House and when we’re comfortable and free from everyday distractions, that’s when our creativity can really shine AND we can try new things. Bottom line is we’re gonna keep making music for the same reasons we were drawn to creating it in the first place, but we need your help in making this fourth record a reality!
Why We Need Your Help
To do it right this next project requires more resources than we have on hand. Even doing it ourselves, a full-length professionally produced studio recording is expensive and we are projecting the total cost for this CD to be no less than $7,500. Our budget covers not just what we need for the studio to record, engineer, mix, and master the music, but also paying our art director to produce the artwork, photography, and packaging. Your investment will make a difference in bringing us the expertise we need, the right recording equipment and the necessary additional personnel.
So scroll back up top and check out the right side of this page to find out what we’re GIVING BACK TO YOU for helping us create a sustainable and creative environment for producing music now and in the future. And if you personally can’t make a financial contribution, not to worry - you can still help us out by sharing this page with your family, friends, and social networks. We sing -- because we are happy!
Risks and challenges
There is some risk to a Kickstarter campaign because if we don't meet our goal of $7,500 we have to return all of the money raised. However, if we all work together and spread the word about this project we can produce this new album and have it in everyone's hands by Spring 2017. This will be the 4th album release so with our experience we are confident that given the funds we are asking for we can deliver a great record.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
