About this project
What is Lowdtown?
Honestly, it's a hard sell to try to say that creating a clothing brand is a new thing. It's easier to go on about how my clothes are printed using high quality inks on ring-spun cotton shirts made in the US, but that's not really anything new. What I hope to really grab your attention with, is my passion for designing clothes and being a part of this industry. I've been designing my own t-shirts since I was in early high school, and I've continued doing so for the past 6 years of my life.
The reason why it's taken me so long to release this line is because I've gone back to the drawing boards over and over, until I was truly confident that I was creating something great.
So I present to you, Lowdtown (pronounced loud-town), which is my creative outlet and passion.
What is the story of Lowdtown?
Lowdtown is my observation of street wear trends. I'm not really sure what the term "street wear" even means to everyone, but it's a trend that heavily emerged in the past decade or so. I think the brands that were originally considered street wear are very different from what someone today might consider street wear. I wouldn't say Lowdtown is a critique on the idea, but more so my reaction to it. I found there to be very similar design aesthetics and graphic language throughout many of today's brands. I tried to break away from that. Instead of relying on heavily branded iconography, I created images that inherently connected with the audience, and I tried to keep as much artistic integrity as possible. At the end of the day, a t-shirt is just a garment that you put on your body to provide moderate warmth, and if a person can actually create a connection with a garment, I think that's a pretty amazing thing.
So the first line of t-shirts I dubbed as the Specimen line. It's a line of characters that are analogous to real people. I thought pretty hard about the concept behind each character, but I don't want to just list them off. Ideally, I want a person to choose a shirt, because they feel a special connection to it.
What is the money going to be used for?
I've already put a lot of my own money into this brand to create a sample run for the t-shirt line. However, if I want to actually put them into production, I would need extra funds. That's where you come in! With the help of Kickstarter, I hope to raise enough money to produce the first line of t-shirts, as well as pay for the shipping costs of sending out the rewards. I hope to use the money towards future products such as accessories, cut-and-sew pieces, outerwear and more.
So what do you get for helping? Here's a breakdown of all the different rewards that are offered for donating. To get a better view of the rewards go here: http://bit.ly/Jrm5xH
Lowdtown Vinyl Sticker - Simple enough. I created a die-cut vinyl sticker of my logo.
Lowdtown Process book PDF - You can get an exclusive look into what went into creating the brand. I'll send you a download link to a pdf that shows early sketches, inspiration, logo processes, and more.
Wood Block Print - I carved a wood block by hand to create unique prints. I used a letterpress machine, so each print has inconsistencies that make it one of a kind. There are 4 possible prints, and you'll randomly get one chosen for you.
T-shirt - This one's pretty obvious. You get a t-shirt of your choice. What you see here is what you get. There are no alternate color ways if it isn't shown here. Follow the link to get a more detailed look: http://bit.ly/Jrm5xH
One of a kind sketch - I'll personally draw something for you of whatever you want.
The Upcoming Line - For the extremely generous folks who donate for the top tier reward, you'll not only get one of each shirt, but you'll also be the first to get every product from the upcoming line (6-10 products). This includes (pending): leather wallet, bag, hat, sweater, hoodie, and whatever else I choose to make.
I've gotten some great support over the years, and I truly appreciate it. Even if you decide not to donate, I really want to thank each and every one of you guys for checking out my project.
If you want to learn more about the brand check out: http://www.lowdtown.com
If you want to reach out to me, you can find me on twitter (@Lowdtown) or email me at: ray [at] lowdtown [dot] com
I try to respond to all the emails I get, so if you have any comments or questions feel free to shoot me a message.
If the project is funded, you'll be receiving a survey that will collect that info before I ship it out.
The shirts come in Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large. I currently don't have plans for larger sizes, but if there is a demand, I'll definitely consider it!
