Spaulding Court is a blighted but beautifully built 20-unit apartment complex in Detroit's North Corktown neighborhood. A community nonprofit named Friends of Spaulding Court has recently stepped in to acquire and fix up the long-abandoned property which had caught fire in places and served as a haven for drug dealers and gun runners. Rehabilitation of Spaulding Court will have a tremendous effect on the surrounding neighborhood, reducing crime, reintroducing stable tenants, and uplifting attitudes and energy. Read more about the property and nonprofit at http://spauldingcourt.com.
This $2,000 micro grant will go directly to Friends of Spaulding Court, mainly to fix up electrical and water main problems.
Note: we'll be adding rewards for backers soon -- we have a couple special things in mind in addition to an inch in Detroit for every dollar.
From Friends of Spaulding Court, about their phased rehabilitation approach
In order to deal with the blighted nature of the structure and liability issues, it was decided that one of the two buildings would be quickly rehabbed while the other building would be mothballed pending a major redesign/rehabilitation effort.
This plan was set upon for a number of reasons:
1) Friends of Spaulding Court needs to generate some revenue to cover tax and insurance costs
2) Occupation of at least one building will greatly reduce the blighted nature of the complex
3) Good tenants will increase the security of the area
4) Having available rental space will allow the project to attract necessary competencies to assist with the next phase of the project
To reinvogorate the south building, we are fixing six units, two at a time over the next six months (August-January).
100% of your donation here goes to Spaulding Court. Team LOVELAND is offering inches in the Hello World microhood as a reward for everyone who backs this project. So, in addition to funding Spaulding Court, for every dollar you donate you'll get a square inch of land in Detroit and on the internet via the LOVELAND project, and a special Friend of Spaulding Court badge on the site, so you'll be doubly inchvested!

So, get in there!
P.S. Disclaimer on rewards: Your inches of land are not legally binding with the city of Detroit so you won't have to worry about things like paying taxes or other legal implications (and you can choose not to accept them after donating to the sculpture, if you don't want to participate). The way this works is LOVELAND legally owns property and is extending social ownership to its inchvestors. We take this very seriously at the same time as we have a lot of fun with it, and seek to create new models for "entertainment fundraising" and community creativity on- and offline. You will be able to visit the property and create on your space shortly, and you can follow and interact with it and your new neighbors via the Hello World map on the website. You can also gift or sell inches to other people.
