Icebergs of Ilulissat: Arctic Art Residency

£2,051

"As autumn fell in a blaze of leaves across the valley where I live, I was transported elsewhere by 'The Library of Ice', not only to the fragile reservoirs of cold and snow at the poles of our planet, but also deep into its past, to a time 'beyond human memory.'"

Julian Hoffman wrote these words on awarding me the 2014 Terrain Nonfiction Prize prize for 'The Library of Ice' (http://www.terrain.org/2014/nonfiction/the-library-of-ice/). Help me travel back to the Arctic, and I'll transport you and others in turn with my work.

I have been invited to spend time as Artist in Residence at Ilulissat Museum on the NW coast of Greenland this summer.

Ilulissat means “icebergs” - so named because it is close to the Sermiaq glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ilulissat is a ideal location in which to research and create new work on the changing Arctic environment. Polar ice and coastal life are themes that have possessed my imagination and governed my work since an earlier trip to Greenland in winter 2010. Five years on, I want to reconnect with the culture, and develop and deepen my ideas by experiencing the landscape in 24-hour sunlight as well as winter darkness.

Immediate goals during the residency include:

 - A nonfiction work on the relationship between time, travel and the Inuit kayak informed by the experience of travelling by kayak in the waters of Disko Bay.

- "Disko Blues", a series of cyanotype prints with the potential to develop into an artist’s book. Water and UV light are central to cyanotype creation so this is an ideal process to record the intense 24-hour summer sun of the Arctic.

- An illustrated talk on my work for the residents of Ilulissat and a cyanotype workshop for Greenlandic artists.

As well as these projects this opportunity will undoubtedly have a significant long-term impact on my work. My residency in Upernavik Museum, Greenland in 2010 generated a number of projects, including - artist’s books, such as "How To Say ‘I Love You’ In Greenlandic: An Arctic Alphabet" (winner of the Birgit Skiöld Award at The London Art Book Fair 2013) and "ITOQQIPPOQ" (the only book by a contemporary artist displayed in the British Library’s recent "Lines in the Ice" exhibition) - exciting Arctic-themed collaborations with creatives including artists Roni Gross and Peter Schell, and BSL poet Donna Williams - and "Disko Bay", a collection of poems published in November 2015 by Enitharmon Press. (You can read about all these and more on my website: www.nancycampbell.co.uk)

I hope you find a reward here that you'd like to experience. Thank you for your interest in my work.

Risks and challenges

These rewards have been chosen carefully, and I am confident that I will be able to deliver your selected reward as described and on time.

I have an excellent track record of completing similar overseas residency projects successfully, to the satisfaction of major funders among them arts organizations such as Arts Council England, The Oppenheim-John Downes Trust, and the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. A legacy of ten years as a professional journalist also means I am practised at meeting deadlines!
