Project Introduction

"When are you going to update your posters?"

This is a popular question that has been asked since the first successful THIRTY81 Project here on Kickstarter in 2013. Now is the time with three updated prints for 2018:

Two 18" x 24" designs and one 24" x 36" infographic.
Two 18" x 24" designs and one 24" x 36" infographic.

Indeed, every year since the initial campaign, the fields of baseball have been tweaked, renamed, and even replaced: adjustments to outfield dimensions in Seattle, Miami, New York, and Houston (RIP Tal's Hill); official name changes to parks in Texas and Chicago; the construction of a new ballpark in Atlanta; and, in the last month, the Angels lowered their right field fence by ten feet (reflected in this update).

The Prints

There’s a saying in the world of jazz, “If you’re going to play the same song, put a new dress on it from time to time.” With that in mind, I went to work reimagining the prints with a focus on simplifying the content with a bold visual presentation, including a large annotated 24" x 36" information graphic print.

This updated information graphic print draws from the popular print that has been available at THIRTY81Project for the past several years. I always felt that original print lacked presence, so I've doubled the size and simplified or eliminated much or the textual content. The left side of the print shows the overlap of all 30 MLB field dimensions with call-outs for notable features — deepest center field, most shallow outfield, most foul territory, etc. Below the fields diagram is a comparison of outfield wall height, again with call-outs for notable features.

The right side of the print presents individual MLB fields arranged from oldest (Fenway Park) to newest (SunTrust Park). Each field is annotated with park name, year opened, and home team. Also, outfield walls are highlighted in red with wall height and left/center/right field depths noted.

In addition to the larger print, two 18 x 24 prints have been created for those who appreciate an even sparser presentation.

The new Fields of Baseball print is based on the former Century of Ballparks print from the 2014 campaign. Fields are again arranged by opening date and annotated with park name, year opened and home team. Additionally for this print, field illustrations include detailed warning track profiles.

The new Dimensions of Baseball poster is based on the original and hugely successful campaign from 2013, updated and approached with a bold and simplified presentation. Above is the dimensional 30-field overlay with simple individual field illustrations arranged below, annotated with field names only.

Print Details

The entire series will be printed using seriography (silk screen) by my friends and incredibly talented folks at Vahalla Studios. They produced the original THIRTY81 Project posters and every serigraph since.

Each poster will be boldly printed on 100# Nightshift Blue Construction paper from the French Paper Co. using metallic silver and red inks.

Each print in the series is a limited edition. The number of prints made will be restricted to those printed for this campaign plus perhaps another 50 to 100. However, only Kickstarter editions will be numbered and signed — the additional prints will be an unsigned 'open' edition.

Upon the end of the successful campaign, surveys will be sent out and print production and fulfillment will commence shortly there after. I expect all pledges to be fulfilled no later than June 30th.

Rewards Tiers

I’ve learned that the best way to run a successful and stress-free campaign is to keep things simple. Therefore, there are just three tiers. Each can be modified to add additional posters, up to three per pledge (see tier column for details or kindly send a note). Based on experience, I've limited each pledge to three prints for shipping reasons to ensure your prints arrive in perfect condition.

Upon campaign completion, a final survey will be sent out to determine the specific posters you wish to receive.

Tier 1 :: One 18" x 24" Print. Your choice among the two designs.

Tier 2 :: One 24" x 36" One Game, Many Dimensions Infographic Print

Tier 3 :: The Triple Play — All three prints, one of each.

Risks and challenges

As an experienced graphic designer, I fully understand the production process from design to print. The posters are already designed and 'press ready'.

From past Kickstarter experience, the biggest challenge is always the organization and logistics of fulfillment which can often hold a surprise or two. Fortunately, I have experience and a terrific team behind me to dampen any unforeseen bumps.

I have successfully funded and fulfilled three Kickstarter projects previously. I have also run the THIRTY81 Project boutique shop since 2014. I have proudly packaged and shipped every item myself to backers and customers around the globe.
