About this project
Last day!! (Plus, check out the new T-Shirt design below!)
OK, everybody, we're in the home stretch now! We've got less than a day to go and we still need a little bit more to make our dream a reality. This past Tuesday we had our first Cinecave Work Day. We got a crew of dedicated customers & pals who volunteered to help us out with some painting & some restoration work on the theater seats. They went above and beyond the call of duty, risking valuable brain cells in their commitment to painting perfection. So awesome! Thanks, guys & gals! We definitely appreciate the sweat pledges as much as the cash ones:).
With the holidays over, we've been able to finally get firm quotes on what everything's going to cost us. We have to have our whole counter upstairs rebuilt, shelves moved, doors re-hung, fixtures built and A/V installed to start. Plus, there's all the work we're doing ourselves that seems to be a litany of $50 to $100 projects that all add up to $1000s. Anyway, our final goal for this Kickstarter fund raiser to make our little screening room a reality is $8,500. We knew that we were underestimating with our original goal, but as we wanted to make sure that we met it we figured that was okay. What we didn't realize was how much we underestimated:). So here we're making a final push. To those of you who have already pledged or can't afford to, please post the link to this page on your Facebook. If you haven't pledged yet but have a couple of extra bucks to spare after the holidays, we'd appreciate it. Maybe we can edge a little closer to what we need. Thank you all so much again for your support. We're so overwhelmed and touched by the response; we can't thank you enough. See you in the Cinecave!
What are we doing?______________________
Lost Weekend Video, one of San Francisco’s last independent video rental stores, is hoping to open an underground screening room and community space for film.
We have an enthusiastic staff with wide-ranging tastes all eager to program fun and engaging screenings. Our aspirations are both high & low brow – from screenings of rare films available only on film or from our extensive collection of unavailable-to-rent imports to sinfully satisfying ‘Buffy’ marathons. We have projectors and access to thousands of films on video and 16mm film. We’ll also continue to work with local film collectives, present premieres of locally produced shorts & features, ladies nights, works in progress and workshops for filmmakers. We’ll have obscure Von Trier docs, Van Damme-athons and maybe even stand-up comedy. There will definitely be something for everyone. Most importantly, we’ll still be here and San Francisco will still have access to our many rare films either through traditional rentals or through the shared experience of a live screening. Let’s get people off of their computers and hanging out with each other again. Let's watch some movies!
Why are we doing this?__________________
We have always felt that independent book stores, record stores and video stores are an integral part of San Francisco’s creative community. With Kindles, iPods & online streaming most media is experienced alone. But we still feel that the shared experience is important. You may read/listen/watch alone, but talking about a film afterward is what helps it stick with you and become meaningful to you.
The popularity of streaming and Netflix-like movie delivery services has made the traditional video store less necessary as a way for people to access film. BUT, not only are many important films unavailable online, like book stores and record stores, we feel that our existence is still an important part of the creative community. Many of the independent screening rooms in SF have closed down and we want to foster an environment where people can hang out and interact with real people off-line.
What will your donation help make possible?
The Kickstarter funds will be used to decorate, install projectors & sound, fix up our bathroom, soundproof and renovate our awesome vintage movie theater seats. Thanks so much for considering our project. Support at any level is most enthusiastically appreciated!
