About

(( ALL GAME FOOTAGE IN OUR VIDEO IS IN-ENGINE FOOTAGE TAKEN IN THE UNREAL ENGINE 4 ))

The Lost Boys Ambassadors were formed out of a local and innovative simulator studio that fell on some hard times. The Specter U.M project was given over to the lead designer to move forward independently with the team that was recruited to develop the game. It was then that after some soul searching our studio was officially founded to be a safe haven for wayward developers who have felt the full force of our challenging economy and the volatile game industry. To embrace the independence it had given us and push forward together with excitement, focus and vision for the completion of this charming game.

We are a nomadic and agile studio to ensure our developers and the creation of the Specter U.M prototype is always the focus of our resources. And because of the support of the awesome people in our lives we've been able to develop this prototype; and are now looking to the amazing people of the Kickstarter community to join with us to complete and release the full Specter U.M game!

The year is 1941, America is just beginning to join in the fray of WWII. Technology is taking leaps of innovation riding the wave of Tesla and Edison's accomplishments in the past decades. Ullysies Mercer having been a student of Tesla's has been recognized as one of the foremost innovators of this new era and continues his research in the seclusion of the Mercer Manor. The accident that causes his death shakes the very foundation of Logan's life and begins your journey into our world.

As you traverse your way through the Mercer Manor to reveal the truth of Ullysies Mercer's death you will encounter secret laboratories and workshops, derelict and abandoned wings, long lost artifacts and the dark underground caverns that were once used as illegal distilleries by the mansion's original owner Don Tartiano. Now used as a safe place to store Ullysies' most volatile experiments and the source of the most dangerous Ultra's you will face off against.

Logan's father Christoph has been called overseas to help fight on the front line while Logan's mother Sarah works in a bombshell assembly factory to contribute to the war effort. Soon after Christoph has shipped off Logan and Sarah are called to the Mercer Manor for the bestowing of a secret gift for Logan. During your first night at the infamous home an act of sabotage by an unknown intruder takes the life of your humble host Ullysies Mercer in a tragic machine implosion. Logan being witness to this catastrophe watched helplessly as the kind-hearted inventor was folded into the void.

Logan having failed to save Ullysies during the accident feels deeply indebted by the secret gift he was given and the heroic tales he's heard about Ullysies rescuing Logan's father Christoph in the WWI trenches when his father was barely old enough to enlist. These thoughts leave Logan stricken with grief as he finds out that Ullysies' entire estate is being left to his family. The wonderment and tragedy of the Mercer Manor is now their home.

The night after the funeral Logan's dreams are haunted by flashes of light, strange creatures and Ullysies crying out for help. Waking in a panicked sweat Logan feels drawn to the lab where Ullysies' tragic death occurred, but is afraid of what is waiting for him in the shadowy corridors of the Mercer Manor.

ULLYSIES MERCER: The Humanitarian Inventor
Having served with valor in WWI Ullysies has long sworn off the horrors of field warfare and devoted his life to the pursuit of inventions and technology that will save and heal lives, after having to take so many lives during his time in the trenches.

Before his death Ullysies was the target of a national controversy over his public refusal to design new weapons for the war effort. Leaving him the target of an industrial and commercial battle between other companies who are contracting these services but making little progress.

The game-play in Specter U.M is unique because we chose to focus the action in the game around a throwing mechanic which in most games has been only a secondary ability. The act of throwing an explosive and using the environment to modify the location, angle and distance has proved so gratifying in other experiences that we made that a focus of our game-play; to both battle the Ultra creatures and solve strategic environmental puzzles by affecting Ullysies technology (U-Tech) and the strange environments you discover throughout and underneath the Mercer Manor.

Expanding on the use of the Phase Disruptor mechanic (an E.M.P blast grenade) which is fashioned from two battery cells that overload, has allowed us to design exciting combinations of affects that the player will be able to customize and modify by combining different types of battery cells. These various cells are uncovered throughout the game as you explore and uncover new areas. This allows for a type of simple crafting that will lead to various playing styles and ways to solve challenges and battles that become possible with creative combinations and tactics.

Risks and challenges

Once funded we're giving ourselves just over a year to complete and release the game in the summer of 2016. The solid guideline we follow for production is that one hour of well executed and unique game-play will take 1000 hours of development. This is a baseline that has proven true for many other teams and game productions.

With that in mind once funded we have allotted ourselves 8,500 development hours for the production of a 7-8 hour (main story) experience. One challenge we may face is that many of our developers are encouraged to pursue opportunities and may be offered positions at other larger studios, in which case we would need to find a replacement for them. For that possibility we have a network of developers we are in touch with and would begin recruiting as soon as we know that's the case.

Another challenge we will face is prepping the game for being shipped into the Steam marketplace. We have no doubts about getting greenlit as we are confident that there is a community that is interested in what Specter U.M has to offer for players, but as a studio we have never prepared a game build for sale on the Steam marketplace before. To help this new venture we have already began gathering information on what that process would entail and plan to be in touch with a Steam representative once we start that process.

Being a nomadic studio means that we don't want to be bogged down by the cost of an office space and the complicated leases and fees that come with having one. So we work primarily with laptops in free boardrooms and sometimes in the art school that we are all alumni from. This fact presents challenges of network tools and while we always have internet access we often use external drives and cloud services to compensate for the lack of network tools.

Being a nomadic studio also means that for our developers who use laptops we can literally work anywhere with an internet connection and this has freed us up to be productive in ways that wouldn't have been possible if we were to pay high costs for a studio office.
