Hi! We are the authors of The Lore Observer, a worldbuilding website where we collect our writings, maps and artworks.
We want to Make 100 Maps of Fantasy Islands that you can use for your tabletop RPG campaigns every time your party needs to be on an island. But here's the deal: we want you to decide the lore of these islands that should be published in the book!
Worldbuilding and mapmaking are activities that we really enjoy, a passion that we both have been following for roughly ten years. When we saw the Make 100 initiative, we thought that it would be a great opportunity to build something cool and useful to writers, artists and tabletop roleplayers.
Our plan is to create an eBook of high-res island maps that you can use in your RPG campaigns, to get inspiration for your own worldbuidling or to prompt your creative writing skills.
Here's the deal: you can be the one who decides what's going on one island and your ideas will be published in the eBook alongside the artwork!
Backing one of the 100 limited rewards, you will get the limited Worldbuilder's Edition of the eBook and you will be part of a collaborative worldbuilding project where your map description, name and landmarks will be published in the eBook next to the artwork.
When the campaign ends and the artworks will be ready, you will be sent one of the 100 islands and you will tell us what you believe it's going on in there. You may be inspired by the island shape and its quirks, or just let your imagination go wild. It's your call!
Once we send you your designated island, we will ask you to tell us the following:
- The island's name.
- The island's lore and description.
- A brief description for three landmarks or any other kind of points of interest.
Your writings will published on the eBook, so let your imagination run wild!
Every island could be anything, so it's entirely up to you to decide what's going on in there!
To keep things manageable there will be a character count restriction and we will ask you to keep things SFW (safe for work), clear from profanity, racism, and other nasty things that might be considered offensive. Also please note that your writings won't affect the island's design unless you select one of the 50€ pledges available.
As the complete eBook is going to take some time to make and assemble, we plan on sending regular updates on the latest maps we made, this way we can keep in touch with our backers and you can check the new designs out and the overall progress of our project.
We want this eBook to also become a tool for writers, artists and worldbuilders. A book you can browse to find inspiration when you need to create, to activate your fantasy and to exercise your creative writing and thinking skills.
Open the eBook to a random page, take a look at the islands and start thinking all kind of things that could happen in there. Write them down, use them in your next great project or just spend some time with your imagination.
Take this island for example, what's going on in there?
- Is it home of a small totalitarian nation that fortified itself on the island and whose patrols guard all the coastlines?
- Is it the private island of a rich alchemist merchant where it's said eerie things can be seen during nighttime?
- Is it a natural oasis where an uncontacted civilization lives in perfect balance with the most dreadful monsters?
- Is it a legendary, secret place where dragons go to die since the ancient times?
- ...and so on!
The Worldbuilder's Edition will be limited to 100 copies and reserved for backers that decided to participate in the collaborative worldbuilding aspect of this project.
For each island we will allocate two pages: one page focused on worldbuilding and lore, while the other will contain the corresponding high resolution image. The landmarks you are going to write for will be featured exclusively on this specific eBook.
The Worldbuilder's Edition eBook will feature around 210 pages.
A no-frills layout containing only the high-res maps along with our backers' island names and descriptions. This allows us to share the results of this collaborative project with everyone else.
The Standard Edition eBook will be around 110 pages.
Here are some examples of maps we already made for this project and some prompts on what it could be on it.
In this island there are huge craters of unknown origin. What happened in there and why they still seem to glow? Could it be just lava surfacing from beneath the ground? Perhaps the soil is unnaturally red inside the craters for unknown reasons?!
This rocky island has has an unnatural crimson river crossing it. Could it be due to a cult of necromancers inhabiting these lands and doing forbidden rituals? Or perhaps is it related to the apparition of an ancient god that was seen in the horizon from the island coasts?
The unique conformation of this archipelago could be due to different reasons. It's said that in the bigger island near the center there's an ancient academy of earth-bending wizards. Other tales narrate that a terrifying beast as big as a thousand ships lives in the depths of these waters, a monster so big that moved land itself to create it's underground lair.
Some seafaring men swear that just approaching this place causes weird reactions on how gravity affects things on board of their ships. Some investigation led to believe that the Cult established on these premises and that Moturg the Devourer itself has been spotted in this area.
The emerald formations in this archipelago could have many different origins. Most people say entire forests crystallized as consequence of a battle between two infamous warlocks that took place in the region. Or maybe they are a natural occurrence emerged from the grounds after a month-long rainstorm and the natives are still investigating?
These eerie formations are surrounded by legends. Some people swear the isles weren't connected a while ago, and the sudden surfacing of these unnatural connections is the sign that something obscure begun. Others say the Insane Sea Men that recently approached the continent came from this weird place, forced to escape from there. Certain is that at some point vegetation stopped growing.
...and much, much more! Of course these are just the first 14 maps we have made for this project, but there are 86 more to come! Check out the project updates to see our latest designs.
Nice to meet you, we are Leonardo and Milo: two old friends that have been worldbuilding custom settings for RPGs since 2007 (Milo) and 2012 (Leonardo). Most of our works are made for our tabletop RPG campaigns, for which we enjoy the creation of new places, factions, and characters as much as playing the games themselves (and sometimes even more!).
A while ago we decided to create a website to collect the artworks and writings we have made so far. While we still have a lot of things to upload in there, mostly due to the fact that we have to translate them in English, we are happy that we managed to build a home for our works, so we're able to share them with the world.
In the website everything is narrated by Maglorean, an unfortunate traveler locked inside an endless library full of absurd books.
Everything started once we realized that over the years we created a massive amount of material that could be appreciated by other players. We honestly felt it was a waste to have all these written and visual works kept between a small group of friends, while it could've been appreciated by more people.
For this reason we decided to share it, hoping that you can enjoy it and find inspiration and ideas for your games and your stories. Feel free to navigate the website and use everything you find in your games!
Here's a little showcase of some of Milo's maps. These won't be on the eBook, we just wanted to share them to give you a general idea of our style.
Chronicles of Shiris is a science-fantasy RPG setting that has been in development for some years. It's an ongoing worldbuilding project where a lot of our characters reside.
Legends of Korulus is an homebrew steampunk setting for Pathfinder that a friend of ours developed a while ago.
This is a map for Abyss of Aydeera, a dieselpunk setting in the making. What happens in Cape Temperance, and particularly in Kincardine Town, seems quite scary.
The map of a Cluster of the "Rusted Grid Syndicate" faction, it was the starting zone of Forgotten Legacies Chapter III, one of our Numenera campaigns.
Another map developed for Abyss of Aydeera. It's a really mysterious place where something weird happened, and likely still happens. You can read more about it on our website.
If you want to keep in touch with us, we have a little mailing list we personally send out once in a while to connect with our readers, to talk about worldbuilding and to share our works. Click on the image below and input your email if you want to join it!
Risks and challenges
Milo has been making maps for all kind of projects since 2008, we are confident that what separates us from 100 new Islands is just the times that he requires to put into this project.
Since the project doesn't have any physical reward, we don't see potential risks or challenges that could set us back. The only thing that could happen is that the work could require a little more time that what we estimated since the techniques used in this kind of artwork are somewhat time consuming. We did our calculations and we believe that the date of the delivery of the final PDF is going to be accurate, but just to be on the safe side we prefer to consider it an estimate more than a deadline.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
