Someone for a Moment: A Mother Teresa Drawing Collaboration
There is a Christmas gift option when you make a pledge. Scroll to the bottom to read how.
What we hope to accomplish and how it's been made possibleBy pledging to this project, you have an opportunity to have your work included in a 5-by-7-foot collaboration drawing. Yes, this is an exciting opportunity for a small piece of your work to be included and donated to a nonprofit organization that supports families through their work. Prints are also available and your purchase of a print will help place this image in more locations to expose families to this wonderful work.
This artwork is being created to honor the accomplishments of Mother Teresa and to help us continue to be passionate about what we do. Without passion there is no inspiration for our kids and no opportunity to dream. "Someone for a Moment" comes from Mother Teresa's philosophy of doing little things to spread compassion to those who are closest to us. The embrace in this image gave this child life for a moment. That is something we are all capable of and this work will be a reminder.
The photograph of Mother Teresa at an orphanage in Calcutta, captured by the photojournalist Raghu Rai in India, has stirred my imagination. This image radiates the compassion Mother Teresa must have felt as she struggled to do her work. It is arguably the single most important image of her life's accomplishments. Our young need our guidance, our strength, and our compassion. This artwork will help remind us of her work and guide us to have responsible, committed, loving families.
In 1998 I created a graphite pencil drawing, based on that photo by Raghu Rai, and gave it as a gift to my mother-in-law. Since then, I've been creating larger works and I now want your help and your small drawings, to be able to assemble a 5-by-7-foot version of this drawing. Raghu Rai has generously given us his permission to move ahead with our project. His representative, Magnum Photos, has also graciously cleared the way for this project.
My InspirationI've been exposed to the works of many artists. Several have had a lasting impression. Two of those artists, David Mesplé and Chuck Close, have influenced my work. I was fortunate to meet David Mesplé in 1993 while I was working towards my Bachelor's Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. I'll never forget the detail in his drawings and the scale of his work. Later, I was exposed to the work of Chuck Close at the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a photorealist in the 1970's and continues his work today. These artists are able to pull you into the work in a way that makes you feel the emotion, rather than standing in front, removed from the work. It's a very intimate moment when you approach their work. This is what I want to achieve with this collaboration drawing project.
Early SuccessThrough the process of putting together this project, we have already accomplished more than we thought possible. Early interest and print sales have allowed us to donate a few prints to help in several ways. The Children's Hospital and Health System™ Foundation in Milwaukee, WI received a donated framed print from us for their annual "Bids for Kids" fundraiser that was held on November 9th, 2011. The artwork was donated to honor a local 4 year old boy who touched many lives during the short time he had.
We were also able to donate a framed work to a local hospital for the national "Paint the Town Pink" silent auction fundraiser that helps create awareness of breast cancer and the importance of mammograms.
Two health care professionals have purchased the print and one is already on display in a women's health clinic lobby.
I've seen people overcome with emotion when they look at the print. I've heard the compassion in their voice while discussing the importance of this work. I know we will be able to do much more and it's overwhelming to consider what this project can accomplish.
Supporting Our ProjectYour pledge will allow us to purchase the raw materials, fabricate and coat the framework, purchase the tempered glass, ship it to the hospital, and install the work. Every pledge is important.
Much is Already AccomplishedWe've put a lot of effort into this project already. Raghu Rai has given us his approval, the smaller drawing for the prints has been completed, the image is ready for the archival limited edition prints, and the supporting framework for the large artwork has been designed and rendered. It's been years in the making and now we need your support to make this vision a reality. It's time for you to have these prints, to be a part of the collaboration, and help me put this wonderful work in an organization where it will have the greatest impact.
This is a little extra information about a couple of the different support levels we have.
$25 & $35 pledge levels. The Collaboration graphite drawing.
If you choose to support us with a $25 or $35 pledge you will receive
a reward package containing:
• an envelope with a reference image of the drawing divided into the squares that will make up the final image with your square highlighted,
• a 2-by-2-inch reference square mounted alongside a numbered blank 2-by-2-inch square for you to use to create your drawing that will resemble the reference square,
• everyone will receive the same type of graphite pencil to help keep the quality of the combined sections consistent,
• and a return envelope for you to send back the square you've completed your drawing on. Remove and keep your sample square and leave the square you've drawn attached to the card it was delivered on. Insert it into the provided envelope and send it back to us. We will do the rest.
The Collaboration work is a unique opportunity for you to create a 2-by-2-inch drawing that will be joined with others to complete the 5-by-7-foot Mother Teresa graphite drawing. You can choose the $25 pledge and receive a section of the background that will look similar to one of these samples:
or the $35 pledge and receive a section of the foreground image area that will include a section of Mother Teresa or the child. It may look something like one of these samples:
No solid white sections will be sent. Everyone has the opportunity to be a part of this collaboration work while sections remain available. Any sections not claimed or returned to us will have the original image showing through that area. If many sections are still available when this project is successfully funded we will have local children complete the remainder.
$100 pledge level. A signed limited edition print of Mother Teresa.
If you choose the $100 pledge, one of the rewards you will receive is a signed limited edition print of Mother Teresa with a child. You do have the option (excludes international orders) to have us professionally frame the print with a high quality metal frame and double mat. All materials are archival. Several framed print sample images have been included below. If you choose to have it framed, add an additional $150 to your funding total. Shipping is included.
If We Raise More than Our Goal
If we raise more than our goal, you will help fund a drawing and framework that I will create. It will also be donated to an organization like a hospital, clinic or family support agency. I would like that opportunity but I hope we can at least accomplish the main goal of this project and create your collaboration drawing and find it a good home.
Thank you for taking some time to learn about this project. I hope you can find a way to make a pledge and help this project come to life.
Christmas Gift Idea
If you would like to pledge and give the reward as a gift, I will post printable cards, FOR ALL PLEDGE LEVELS, on our website www.lookcreative.com that you can print and give as a Christmas gift to someone. The card will let them know that you are supporting this project in their name and it will explain what they will be receiving. Later, after our funding goal is a success, I'll request names and addresses and that's when you can indicate who and where the reward will go to. This is a very unique gift and in the spirit of Christmas giving. It not only brings someone you love closer to this wonderful work, it helps me, the artist. continue doing the work I love.
