The Books Have Shipped!
Woohoo! This was a big and exciting week for us. I gotta admit, as a first time book author, sending hundreds of books around the world was pretty damn exhilarating!
Last Friday, the new shipping materials came in (ecopackaging and ecolabels). Saturday, I spent the day printing shipping labels for all the different reward tiers. I have never been so exhilarated by paperwork. Fond memories of old friends, students and colleagues rattled through my mind as I read the familiar names. I invented exciting stories as I read the names of strangers in places I have worked before and especially in places I have yet to visit.
Sunday morning found Gabe's (the diagram illustrator) living room filled with stacks of books where Jessica and Octavio helped me pack the remaining books. Jessica's contagious excitement for all the different locations made it seem even more real!
Monday morning the post office opened two hours early, just for us, so that we could send all of the books without a long and unhappy line behind us. I love this small town, where that can happen so easily. The domestic books were shipped with no problems. The international books, ended up being a different challenge.*
Most of you will receive your books next week. Some of you are still two weeks out because of international shipping.
We have distributed over 500 physical books. There have been over 600 downloads of the pdf, and over 1000 downloads of the kindle version. I will be sending you all an email next month when we will have the kindle version available for free, for a couple of days, just in case you want it in that format as well.
It has been a wild ride. Having you on it with me, made it not just possible, but quite a blast. Thanks again. I hope you love the book.
We are proofreading the Spanish version now and it is looking really good. I can't wait to get you the Spanish version (if you ordered one).
I think I am hooked. I am already getting excited about the next book, but first I will be pushing on publicizing this book. Please let me know if you have any radio, TV, newspaper, blog, lecture, book signing opportunities that you think would be good for me.
*PS Shipping lessons
The more ecological packing materials ended up costing more, and they were a little heavier which added to the price, but I think it was worth it. Unfortunately, my amazing post office experience turned a little sour when they could not match the international prices that were listed on the USPS website. Three hours later, the USPS customer support finally told me that the specific prices I was referencing on their website were wrong… and that there is nothing they can do about it. The prices ended up being much higher than we charged on the Kickstarter. We made up a work around that seems to be working well, where we ordered each international book on Amazon and shipped each one to a different address. It took quite a long time, but Amazon was able to do much better on shipping prices. We are now delivering the books that we had previously packed for international shipping to local bookstores for local sales.
Due to some generous donations, we were able to cover the extra shipping cost. I mostly told this story so that other authors could learn from it.
I can't wait to hear what you think about the book!
