Thanks, Urutsini. Everything you said is true, and of course, we want to be sensitive to what people feel about the delays. But we can't provide refunds, because we've already paid our printer and all other contractors based on the amount of orders we got. Justine, your book is already being made because of the pledge you gave us. We were very grateful to get that pledge, and we're doing everything we can to follow through on the pledge we gave you of what we hope to be the best puzzle book in history.

I'll have some more announcements about amazing developments with The Maze of Games in the next couple weeks, and I think you'll like them. I'd like to stop talking about delays and start talking about awesome things we'll be doing for you guys. We're a lot more fun to have around when we're talking about fun stuff rather than apologizing. So please understand that we're apologizing for the things that were out of our control, and owning up to the decisions that were in our control and that we made to make the book the best thing we could make. Now that the book is actually being printed and is hopefully working its way toward us soon, I hope you're cool with us trying to move on to talk about the cool things.

If not, though, we can keep talking about the difficulties. We're here for whatever you guys want to discuss.

@James - "I have made a conscious decision to buy this book from Lone Shark Games and not to be a source of a interest-free loan."
But that's precisely what we as backers are providing through crowd funding. Before crowd funding, a project creator would have to either find a generous benefactor in rare circumstances or more commonly approach a financial institution for a loan, with interest. Now, instead of asking banks for loans, project creators can ask the community for the financial help they need and it is interest free.

"Thank you for owning your mistakes with the delivery estimates. Please just ensure there aren't any more"
While every effort can be made to experience no further delays, no one can predict what's going to happen. There may very well be further delays, whether inside or outside Lone Shark Game's control.

@Justine - While it is entirely up to Lone Shark Games how they wish to handle your request. Please be aware of this in the Kickstarter terms and conditions:
"A Project Creator is not required to grant a Backer’s request for a refund unless the Project Creator is unable or unwilling to fulfill the reward. Project Creators are required to fulfill all rewards of their successful fundraising campaigns or refund any Backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill."
      And:
"When projects launch on Kickstarter they’re often in the early stages of development. Before backer rewards can be fulfilled, the project itself must first be completed. Project creators provide an estimated delivery date for each reward tier on their project in order to give backers a rough estimate as to when they may be able to fulfill. Note that this is an estimated date rather than a firm ship date. You can find this date on the project page, presented at the bottom of any given reward tier."

I just noticed that it actually says "Estimated delivery" on the rewards section of each project. So that if the project creator intends to and does fulfil the reward that you pledged, regardless of when that is, they have no obligation to provide refunds. But I'm not Lone Shark Games and as mentioned it's up to them how they want to handle this.

      And yes @Andrew, don't jinx it. :)

As Andrew said though, ultimately, this book is going to be fantastic. And the more work and effort put into it, the closer it will be to perfection.

Hi, I wanted to see how I go about getting a refund? This is now a long, looooong overdue present for someone! Whilst I'm glad you now seem to be well on your way to delivering, I'm no longer interested in continually hanging on waiting any more and respectfully just want out of this kickstarter campaign. Please confirm how I apply for a refund. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks. But, hey, let's not be throwing around phrases like "two years late," please.

    5. Missing_small

Creator Andrew Claussen on March 26

I'm really excited for the book. I would rather have a perfect product (in the eyes of the developer) two years late, than a lack luster product at the promised time. Taking time to make sure things are wonderful is not a bad thing in my eyes.

James: I did not say mid-May was the new estimate. I don't have one yet from the printer. I will update when I have one. Till then, thanks for your patience.

    7. Missing_small

Creator James Brown on March 21

Thanks for the update, it is good to have some clarity on the situation.

@Urutsini Whilst I don't agree with your statement that: "You have not ordered a product, you have pledged support to allow a group of people to complete their dream." For the reason that I have made a conscious decision to buy this book from Lone Shark Games and not to be a source of a interest-free loan. I do agree with you, that new projects experience problems. I also agree that previously untried and untested things often encounter problems. But there is the undeniable fact that these problems and delays have nearly doubled the delivery time for this project. That is what I, and a lot of others are upset about.

@Lone Shark Games - Thank you for owning your mistakes with the delivery estimates. Please just ensure there aren't any more - Along with everyone else, I await mid-may with great excitement.

Finally, we haven't updated because we had nothing to say. Our next post was going to be to show you the proof of the book, and that's happening at least a month later than I thought it would. I'll certainly not go a month without an update again.

Thanks again for your support. I really do hope you like the results.

      Mike

    13. Lsg_icon_bigger.small

Creator Lone Shark Games on March 16

And let me say a couple more things. It's not our business to be learning on your dime. We made mistakes in the planning process, but the primary mistake was simply not adding six months to the intended delivery date. We should have planned for far more things to take longer and be harder than they did. So that's on us, not our contractors or our printers. Some things we can't control, but we can definitely control our ability to estimate difficulty. We were way too optimistic, and it won't happen again on my watch.

      Mike

    14. Lsg_icon_bigger.small

Creator Lone Shark Games on March 16

Hey, guys. We've been traveling the last few days, and didn't notice these comments. Here's where we are. The printer is giving us proofs in a week or so. We'll approve those and then tell them to start the presses. They will finish printing shortly thereafter and send them to us. That'll take about a month and a half. We then will begin the process of shipping them out.

Every single step of this process has taken vastly longer than we expected. Some of that's because we cared about getting everything right. And some of it is because things just surprised us about how long they took. We know a lot better now, and I assure you that we didn't mean for this to drag out this long. For that you have my apologies, and my promises of a very good book. Thanks for listening.

      Mike

      Update #42:
"The process of getting the book printed will take a while. With luck, the book will be rolling off the presses sometime in February. Then it might get to Seattle sometime in March."

How much more information do you need? While it wouldn't hurt if the project creator said hi occasionally more often, but in regards to the project itself personally I don't need another update. Come the end of March, it would be nice to have an explanation of any further delays but until then I'm happy.

    16. Missing_small

Creator John Davis on March 15

@Patrick From your own quote of the FAQ, it says we should be patient IF the creator is making a good faith effort at transparency, and that we should demand 'continued accountability'.
This should not be taken as whining that the project is late from me, I understand that things take time. But it's been nearly 2 months now since the last post, and some sort of status update would be appreciated, whether it be "Everything's proceeding on schedule" or "Something was delayed at the printers, it'll be another month before the books arrive."

    17. 19372_308588293641_530218641_4857993_5968242_n.small

      Creator Urutsini on March 15

@James - You have not ordered a product, you have pledged support to allow a group of people to complete their dream. If you were "ordering a product" then you have every right to expect results in a timely manner. But, as mentioned in previous posts here, these dreams we are backing are completely new ideas and any date attached to fulfilling that dream is elastic at best. You complain that it's been a year, but the "estimated" delivery date was November so we're looking at only a few months delay. To use your analogy, we *expect* delays in new projects, whether Kickstarted or otherwise, we don't *expect* drivers to speed.

I saw a good response to this sort of comment recently that explains it well. Before a new product is released to the general market, it has gone through many stages of development. Invariably, there are some delays somewhere in the timeline with almost all new products, for various reasons. Because the general public is now entering the timeline at a far earlier stage with funding initiatives such as Kickstarter, we are becoming far more exposed to those delays. Don't you think it's even more frustrating for the project creators when there are delays? The worst mistake a project creator can make is not communicating effectively with backers. I think the communication during this project has been spot on.

    18. Missing_small

      Creator Patrick on March 14

I agree completely with Aaron. Kickstarter backers must always assume that projects will be delivered late. I have backed 26 projects and only 2 have delivered on time. It's the way things work when something new is being created. As backers we need to realize that we are supporting someone's never-tried-before vision. The delivery date is a guesstimate - at best - because they have never done anything like it before. Heck, major international companies slip on delivery dates all the time and they have far more experience and resources than anyone on Kickstarter. And Lone Shark has been really good about updates. As long as backers are updated about projects and delays, and the reasons are legitimate, I feel good about the project.

From the Kickstarter FAQ: "It's not uncommon for things to take longer than expected. Sometimes the execution of the project proves more difficult than the creator had anticipated. If a creator is making a good faith effort to complete their project and is transparent about it, backers should do their best to be patient and understanding while demanding continued accountability from the creator"

    19. Missing_small

Creator James Brown on March 14

So what your saying is because 90% of all kickstarter projects are delivered late and with bad communication - that somehow makes it alright?

Let me put it this way - 90% of drivers speed on the roads, does that make it alright for you to do so too?

    20. Smash.small

Creator Aaron Cohen on March 13

Also, the last update noted specifically that it is out of their hands now and going through the printing process. Also, go back and read it. From the updated timeline given in it, I feel nothing is off schedule.

    21. Smash.small

Creator Aaron Cohen on March 13

Calm down. I have backed around 100 kickstarter projects and I would say less than 10 have been delivered by the estimated date. Also many of them have had poor communication from start to finish. I do not rank this one anywhere near those poor campaigns. Sure, things are taking a bit longer than originally anticipated but I feel up until this point the updates have been frequent and very informative! I bet we hear something very soon.
