About this project
Andy, an unambitious but talented young writer stuck in Austin, Texas, Slackerdom USA, is looking to get away, to strike out on his own and see what else his life and this great country has to offer him. Especially after his sign language interpreter girlfriend leaves him for a hotshot Deaf guy. "On to everything I'm ever gonna do and everyone I'm ever gonna meet." Sounds romantic, but with a broken down RV and a debt to his landlord older brother Ben, the Gordon Gecko of Craigslist wheeling and dealing, hitting the road seems impossible. Until, that is, he hears of a way to make some long money fast at a pharmaceutical testing facility as a human lab rat. And so Andy takes the only opportunity he sees he has and checks in, submitting himself to a week and a half in a research facility, taking experimental meds and having his blood constantly taken from him. There, amongst even more lovable losers, he finds Misty, a vibrant and mysterious human being with whom he actually has a true connection. However, both he and Misty's pasts and personal fears threaten to wreck a good thing before it even begins. If Andy can survive the testing and maintain a cool head despite his intense feelings for Misty, he may have just found the co-pilot on the road of life he's been looking for all along.
HERE WE ARE is the debut feature film of NYU film grad, writer/director David Bellarosa. It is inspired by his time living in Austin, Texas alongside other young, creative types trying not to slip through the cracks, as they struggle to hold onto their piece of a debased American Dream that seems to have little use for them or their aspirations in the first place.
It also deals with what the writer calls "the epic poverty of ambivalence" amongst "Generation Why?" Americans.
And it takes place largely here,
his old house and RV in Austin, Texas
and a place like here,
a medical research facility that we're creating in this vacant factory nearby:
HERE WE ARE is set against the vibrant and uniquely absurd backdrop of Austin, Texas. Long an enclave for strays of all kinds, Austin lends its unique character to our story, providing the perfect setting for this tale of youthful malaise, frustrated ambition and idealized romantic love.
Austin is also home to the Texas School for the Deaf and a large and vibrant Deaf community. With HERE WE ARE we will be working with talented local Deaf actors and aim to show a side of the Deaf community that is underrepresented, a way that features multi-dimensional characters while showcasing their individual talents and expression.
HERE WE ARE is very excited to announce that ANDY, our hero, our main man, our Holden Caulfield, our Sal Paradise, our Andy, the face of a generation, has been cast!

David Bellarosa grew up in northern New Jersey where his mother would take him to plays in New York City all the time. And he had an English teacher in high school who thought something was good in him, so she got him onto the writing of the Beat Generation and put him in creative writing classes. He kept writing. He went to the University of New Hampshire where he was an English major and received a minor in Psychology. He kept writing. He had a radio show very late at night as "The Lonely Giant" and worked at the schools TV station where he learned how to shoot video and edit it. He kept writing. He made a film, Seven Days Drowned, and it won first place in the school's SCANTV film festival. He then applied to film schools, sending the film along with a one-act absurdist play he had written. He was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and decided he would go.
He then spent years living in Greenwich Village, writing, learning about cinema, working on many films in various capacities and figuring out who he was and wanted to be.
There, in 2006, he founded LONELY GIANT, an independent film production company with which he has designed and built sets, made short films, music videos, promotional materials for bands and companies, and, now, finally, feature films like HERE WE ARE.
David left New York for America over five years ago and has lived, written, and worked all over the country.
He's lucky to have made so many real friends along the way.
And he's lucky to have found so much inspiration.
David has since made a true home of Austin, Texas and is incredibly excited to be finally making his first feature film there. He's very proud that film is going to be HERE WE ARE and can't wait to share it with you and the rest of the world.

From Travels With Frenchy
Well alright, but where's the money goin ?
Making a movie isn't cheap or easy but it's our favorite thing to do. All money from this Kickstarter will go to the production of the film HERE WE ARE. It will help pay for locations (the medical research facility!), food and wages for cast and crew, equipment (nice lenses!), set decoration (a medical research facility!) and costumes (we'll need plenty of scrubs and lab coats!), and production insurance. Since I won't be able to do it without the help of a great crew of talented craftsmen and craftswomen willing to work with me for a "love rate" and the generous support of family, friends and complete strangers who believe in me and this film, I want to make sure everyone feels it is all worth while.
And so, how Kickstarter works:
People pledge any amount they want and choose a reward. Rewards are the things we're offering in order to raise funds. You can find all the rewards in the column on the right. You can either pay the exact amount and get the reward you want or you can pay more and we'll consider the rest a donation. At the end of our Kickstarter campaign, if the combined total of all pledges for our project meets our $26,000 goal, then the credit cards of those who pledge are charged and we receive the funds to make our film. If we don't meet our goal, then the money is not withdrawn from your account and no rewards are provided. If we exceed our $26,000 goal we will be awesome. Aside from a 5% Kickstarter fee and a 3-5% Amazon credit card processing fee, all funds raised will be used directly in the production of the film.
Can we exceed the goal? Yes we can and let's hope that we do! This would be HUGE! We need all the help we can get and Kickstarter will allow as much money as is given before the deadline.
Other ways to help: Spread the word! That too is a MAJOR contribution. Tell everyone you know how cool this project is. Share our website, like us on Facebook, hashtag us on Twitter & Instagram with #HEREWEAREusa ; blog it, sandwich board it, or promote it any way you can think of. Everything helps! This is a new, exciting model of making movies, and you can be part of it! We want to build a community and a powerful audience for this movie and LONELY GIANT and it all starts with you!
Do you or your company want to donate something that will help with the production of HERE WE ARE? In-kind donations could include meals for cast & crew, a generator, a pool table, gas cards, gift cards, housing for out of town team-members, locations, vehicles, and equipment. Feel free to drop a line anytime to discuss, anything helps!
THANK YOU ONE AND ALL

Risks and challenges
Making movies is tough. Even with unlimited resources, juggling the challenges of completing a feature film can be a daunting task. We have to work out everything from actors’ schedules to location fees to equipment rentals to production insurance, and that’s all just pre-production. Once we’ve got everything ready to go before the cameras, we have to ensure that we stick to our pre-determined schedule, make our days, and keep everyone on the crew paid and happy. And once it’s all in the can, the fun of post-production begins…editing, coloring, sound designing, mixing, making it deliverable and sending it out to film festivals around the world.
Luckily, the crew of HERE WE ARE is comprised of film professionals with years of work on films ranging from Hollywood blockbusters to tiny independent feature films. Writer/director David Bellarosa, an NYU graduate, has been working in film for over ten years in New York, Los Angeles, and Austin, gaining valuable knowledge and experience on set in various roles in order to one day helm his first feature film. Among the filmmakers that David and his producers have worked with are Richard Linklater, Joel and Ethan Coen, Terrence Malick, Nora Ephron, Oliver Stone, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Jason Reitman, Bryan Poyser, Christine Vachon, Catherine Hardwicke and many more.
All of us at Lonely Giant are committed to filmmaking and film culture in all its forms; this is a passion for us as well as the way we make our living, so you can count on our perseverance and dedication to having a finished product that we can all be proud of. What’s more, as a homegrown Austin Texas production, we will draw on our network of production professionals that has been built through years of hard work within the local film industry. With our experience and relationships with local filmmakers and crew members, HERE WE ARE is uniquely poised to benefit from the absolute best that the Austin film community has to offer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
