London School of Capoeira (LSC) Thirty Year Celebration
Capoeira is an amazing art form which was originally created by the enslaved African people in Brazil as a form of resistance. Today, it continues to bring people together in an inspiring physical game. It is one of the only art forms recognised by the United Nations as a part of the cultural heritage of humanity. This is a special year for the London School of Capoeira (LSC) as we’re celebrating our 30th anniversary this autumn. Yes, it’s been 30 years since the pioneering masters of the London School of Capoeira, Mestres Silvia Bazzarelli and Marcos dos Santos, came to settle in London, started our charity, and brought for us the opportunity to build lifelong skills through this Brazilian art form.
The 30 year milestone is really important for us and for this unique art form which cannot be learned from a book, a video, or online. It must be shared between people, passed on from generation to generation.
We see this special moment in the history of our school as a great opportunity to enhance our students' development and to raise awareness of our art form among the wider public. This is why we've got big plans for our anniversary, grading and performance event to take place on 27 October .
We want to bring over a few Masters from Brazil, including our Grandmaster, Master Sombra. The added ‘X-factor’ brought by our international guests will not only bring an extra spark to our workshops and our big day, it’ll also allow players of all levels to ‘cook’ their games until they are red-hot!
With your support we’ll be able to create both: 1) a unique one off event and 2) fantastic Capoeira footage, which we can keep forever to continue to inspire fellow ‘students’ and ‘players’, including exclusive footage for all our wonderful and much appreciated kickstarter backers.
Our LSC Capoeira UK 30th Anniversary Celebration will include a series of workshops open to our own, and other UK Capoeira students. The week of workshops will lead towards the grading ceremony and performance at our anniversary event on the 27th of October (held at our studio space in Finsbury Park London). On this special day, students will be awarded their first, or following higher belt (grade) after playing with the Masters. The Masters will try to out play everyone including each other, showing off their top level skills to the audience.
What are you funding? Its simple!
- Airfares for 3 guest Masters from Brazil
- Accommodation for guests close to our studio,
- Food and hospitality costs for Masters while they are in London
Who is coming from Brazil?
Master Sombra founded the Association of Capoeira Senzala in Santos, Brazil over 40 years ago, the home base of many Capoeira professionals who are now developing the art form in Europe.
Instructor Alberto Vidigal has developed work with children in his area (Santa Maria Community). He also works with Master Sombra at Senzala Academy and will travel to UK with him.
Contra Master Valter Spolaor helped to establish the Capoeira school Monte Serrat in Santos, Brazil. He began studying Capoeira at the age of 3 and has developed a unique and skilful game of Capoeira.
Why is it so important for our Charity?
Capoeira brings people together in a unique physical game, played to music. It doesn’t matter what age, gender, size, level of experience, or ability you have. At Capoeira everyone plays together in the Capoeira circle, every game is partly a performance and everyone brings and contributes something special to the party (so to say!).
This is certainly rare in physical art forms and sports, where streaming, ranking and categories are the norm. But this also means that sometimes it can be a bit tricky to fit Capoeira into other formats and spaces in a way that holds on to what is unique about our art form.
We envision our LSC 30th Anniversary celebration to truly reflect our Capoeira values. This includes celebrating on our home turf, in our own time and with special visits from our extended Capoeira family and masters from Brazil. All so they can join in the performances, challenge our students and of course delight our audience. We also want to use this special celebration and time and space to record as much footage as we like to document this important cultural event and share it with all of our contributors, students, fans, friends and family and wider network.
Our LSC 30th Anniversary event will take place on the 27th October at our studio in Finsbury Park, North London. Due to their tireless, high quality work and entrepreneurial skills, our incredible Masters have managed to run a studio space in London’s zone 2, dedicated to Capoeira, for nearly 20 years. This is another first for Capoeira in the UK. Anyone familiar with our city, the high costs and scarcity of spaces, will understand what an achievement this is for our charity.
Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter outing and our anniversary is a very important occasion for us, so we have chosen a project which is within our skills to deliver. As an organisation we have been teaching Capoeira, holding events and making uniforms for training for 30 years. This means that as well as top level Capoeira expertise, we also have very solid tried and tested experience in the other areas core to the delivery of this project. That being said, there is a definite challenge in making sure that our delivery is to the highest standard we are able to achieve.
It is possible that for some unforeseen economy related reason the flight prices change much more than they have done at other times, (the usual movements of flight prices between UK an Brazil is something we normally have an eye on). This is unlikely, but if it were to happen then we may have to bring two guests and not three. If we hit our goal, then we are sure we can bring at least Mestre Sombra and one other.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
