We started the London Centre from Book Arts in 2012 with the goal of creating a space where artists and the wider community could affordably access equipment, resources and expertise to create and edition books and publications – becoming the first and only centre of its kind in the UK.
Being artists ourselves, and passionate about artist books and artist-led publishing, we were acutely aware of the lack of support for emerging artists outside of universities. We wanted to create a space open to everyone, regardless of background, education, or experience.
Since we opened our doors in 2012, we have managed without any outside funding; a challenge at times, particularly in London where rent is a premium and affordable artist studios are under constant threat. So far, we have been able to cover the costs of the studio, as well as numerous artist residencies, exhibitions, publishing collaborations, and events by running workshops and through our membership programme. In the past four years, we have run more than 300 workshops for more than 1,800 members of the public, and have seen our membership grow consistently.
We’re growing, and we need your help.
Recently, we have taken on another studio to accommodate the growing needs of the Centre and our members. The new studio will be a dedicated space to run workshops, special events, and will house the library and a new reading space (including an extensive reference library and the Publish and Be Damned Public Library).
As we begin work on the new studio, we also plan to improve the existing studio to create additional workspace for members and a new dedicated space for reprographics (Riso and digital printing; perfect, coil, and wiro-bindings). In addition, we plan to repair or replace essential bits of equipment, including our electric guillotine, perfect binder and letterpress proofing presses.
What your donations will support:
- Refurbishment of the new & existing studio space
- Moving, cataloguing, and growing our reference library
- Building a new space dedicated to reprographics and publishing
- Repair or replacement of key equipment
All proceeds from the Kickstarter will go towards developing the new studio and improving our existing studio – this will including minor building work, new workbenches, shelves for the library, and replacing and repairing equipment. Any additional funding that exceeds our goal will go back directly into the Centre towards our public and artistic programming, such as artist residencies, talks, events and advice sessions.

Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges are minimal.
We have already secured the lease for the new studio. All we need now is help in furnishing the new studio, repairing and replacing old equipment, and some minor building works.
