UPDATE: Introducing a Brand New Front Lens — Naiad: 15mm
After the hugely inspiring response we received from testers, the press, and backers worldwide, we immediately contacted our engineers to discuss ways of expanding our first ever Art Lens System by creating a fourth front lens.
We asked our backers all around the globe to vote for what the focal length should be. Responses poured in, and the result by popular demand is 15mm: an ultra-wide-angle prime lens!
Soon we were leaping on a plane, flying over to our manufactory high in the Chinese mountains to make this happen! After weeks of wacky calculations, tireless testing, and a whole lot of our wild imagination, our engineers devised Naiad – a front lens with a brand new optical construction.
With a closest focusing distance of 10 to 15 cm, Naiad dares you to get right up close and fill the full breadth of your frame with stunning details. But this is no ordinary 15mm lens: Naiad produces the super strong, saturated colors and punchy contrast of the legendary Lomo look, adding a whole new aesthetic to the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System to give you even more artistic options.
With this additional front lens, the Neptune System is a more marvelling creative package than ever: with each focal length offering a radically different aesthetic, colors, and point of view; and each twist challenging you to rethink your compositional skills, and see the world afresh. Now, this new front lens is available as an Add-On. All you need to do is add 249 USD to your pledge and you’ll save a massive 45% on the planned retail price! To find out how to add an item to your pledge, check out our FAQs.
Please note that these technical specifications are subject to change as we are still working on optimizing the features of the Naiad 15mm front lens.

The Neptune Convertible Art Lens System is everything you need on any photography venture. A reimagination of the world’s first convertible lens system created by Charles Chevalier in the late 1830s, this unique system opens up a world of possibilities for beginners and professionals alike.
The Neptune Convertible Art Lens System consists of a lens base that’s mounted to your camera and several convertible lens components. By interchanging the front components, you can shoot photos or videos at three different fixed focal lengths — 35mm, 50mm and 80mm. An Art Lens System unlike any other; it offers you all the freedom of a zoom lens without compromising on prime lens quality, and it’s the only convertible Art Lens out there to work with a range of modern-day analogue and digital cameras. Each component is assembled by using the finest multi-coated glass and crafted to produce exceptionally sharp focus and strong, saturated colors for stunning high-definition images — even when you’re shooting close-ups at 0.25m/9.8” with Thalassa (35mm), 0.4/15.7” with Despina (50mm) or 0.8m/31.5” with Proteus (80mm). This is an Art Lens System that lets you take beautifully intimate shots, allowing you to get near enough to capture every last detail of your subject. And thanks to its small and lightweight design, you can take it with you everywhere.
“The Neptune System is absolutely suitable to my Rock'n'Roll needs. I need something that is small and compact." – Acey Slade
And that’s not all — the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System also features two aperture mechanisms to give you all the creative freedom you need. The stopless iris diaphragm aperture mechanism in the lens base features a wide range of optimal f/stops for each focal length, but with the 35mm and 80mm lenses you’ve got the freedom to go beyond that range and experiment. You can also soften your style by inserting the special aperture plates in front of the iris diaphragm to edge your frame with delicate bokeh. And because the lens works with a fully manual focusing system, you can enjoy complete creative freedom over the sharpness of your shot.
By reviving and reinventing Chevalier’s convertible lens design for modern-day cameras, we’ve created an Art Lens System that will revolutionize the way you approach photography and videography. There’s no limit to the amount of new front lenses we can produce, and we’re already designing new lens components with unique effects and possible focal lengths ranging from an ultra-wide-angle 15mm to a 400mm monocular. Each new front lens will be just like the ones you can see on this page — small, handcrafted and compatible with the same lens base, meaning that you won’t have to break the bank by buying a whole new system every time you want to shoot with a new prime lens.
Photographers and videographers all over the world have tested the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System to make sure that we’ve created a system that performs exceptionally in any and every shooting situation. Lightweight and compact, it’s everything you need in your bag — no matter where your adventures take you.
"I like how you can have the option of switching up your shooting style very easily. I think it's really wonderful and a beautiful design." – Olivia Locher
“So far, I’m really liking the idea behind the new Lomography Neptune Convertible Art Series lenses. They’re well built, seem very different from everything else out there, and also seem to be a pretty solid deal all around.” – Phoblographer
“Lomography has designed the base and the set of three prime lenses: 3.5/35, 2.8/50 and 4.0/80. They practically fit inside your pocket and give you versatility and good quality on the budget.” – DIY Photography
“It’s not easy to find three even halfway decent name-brand lenses for under $1,000, so the versatility of Lomo’s new system might be the best thing about it at this price.” – The Verge
“The affordability mixed with the quality and versatility of the system has people really excited.” – Uproxx
“But what if you could also swap out the individual pieces inside that lens? That is exactly what Lomography did with the Neptune, a convertible art lens system that is essentially three prime lenses in one.” – Digital Trends
When attached to the base, the Thalassa lens shoots at a wide-angle fixed focal length of 35mm, making it perfect for architecture, street photography and reportage. As this is a focal length very close to that of the human eye, you can approach your subjects intimately, fill the frame, and immerse yourself in the shot. And as Thalassa has a closest focusing distance of 0.25m/9.8” and delivers exceptional sharpness, you’ll be able to capture all the gritty details that make this beautiful planet we live on so captivating. Sleek and compact, the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System is discreet enough to capture bustling street scenes off guard. Combine Thalassa with the special aperture plates to turn busy urban backgrounds into colorful bokeh frames for stunning environmental portraits, and try bypassing the optimal maximum aperture of f/3.5 to add unique effects to your imagery.
To shoot at a versatile fixed focal length of 50mm, attach Despina to the base. Nicknamed the Nifty Fifty for good reason, 50mm is one of the pillars of photography — a great focal length for learning, but also for constantly improving your craft. Ideal for everyday, fashion and studio photography, it comfortably captures everything from full-length portraits to editorial spreads in stunning high definition. 50mm also produces delicate bokeh — particularly when fired at the largest aperture of f/2.8 and especially when paired with the special aperture plates. With a closest focusing distance of 0.4m/15.7”, Despina captures stand-out features of couture, and allows you to experiment with framing and composition.
Proteus is perfect for portraits, sports and action photography. It has a closest focusing distance of 0.8m/31.5”, and when attached to the base it shoots at a fixed focal length of 80mm. This means that the depth of field is very shallow, and as such Proteus produces beautiful, soft bokeh perfect for framing a subject and guiding your viewer to the focus of your shot. Not only is this ideal for placing your subject against a busy background to create a mesmerising headshot, but it’s also great for isolating the background to make subjects in the foreground appear closer, which makes it a popular focal length for capturing sports stars in action. And because the bokeh also turns crisp foliage into textured backdrops for snapshots of fauna, Proteus is a fantastic lens for nature photography. Add delicate effedcts to your background using the special aperture plates, and bypass the optimal largest aperture of f/4.0 to experiment with the blurred areas in your shot even more.
Special Aperture Plates for Delicate Bokeh Shapes
Each of the interchangeable front lenses of the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System works with a stopless iris diaphragm aperture mechanism to produce beautiful, smooth bokeh. Although each front lens has its optimal aperture — f/3.5 for Thalassa, f/2.8 for Despina and f/4.0 for Proteus — you can also push beyond these to experiment and produce unique effects with Thalassa and Proteus.
And that’s not all — each Neptune Convertible Art Lens System also comes with six special drop-in aperture plates to give you unlimited creative options. These special aperture plates can be inserted in front of the iris diaphragm to scatter carefully crafted bokeh shapes through the edges of your shot. There are six different shapes for you to choose from, and each creates beautiful bokeh.
The Neptune Convertible Art Lens System pays homage to one of the fathers of photography — inventor of the first ever photographic optic lens, Charles Chevalier. A leading Parisian optician, Chevalier began designing lenses when he was little more than a teenager. In 1835, he designed a lens for Louis Daguerre’s Daguerreotype camera, and the two gave the world practical photography.
Ever the innovator, in the late 1830s Chevalier handcrafted the world’s first convertible photographic optic lens. Drawing inspiration from an 1834 telescope design, the Lunette à Verres Combinés, Chevalier aimed for the stars and invented a photographic lens system that could be taken apart and reassembled to create different focal lengths. Voilà — the convertible lens was born. As photography evolved his concept endured, with more convertible lenses being released throughout the 20th century.
Inspired by the compelling history of the convertible lens, we’ve upgraded and re-defined this classic concept with a host of new creative features to create a comprehensive lens system for a wide range of modern-day analogue and digital cameras. The Neptune Convertible Art Lens System is three prime lenses of exceptional optical quality in one. It covers three focal lengths essential to photography — 35mm, 50mm and 80mm.
But that’s not all — this Art Lens System has been deliberately constructed so that it can grow alongside your creativity. We’re already designing new lens components with a wide range of unique special effects and possible focal lengths from a 15mm ultra-wide angle to a super telephoto lens with a focal length of 400mm and everything in between. And because we want you to join us for every step of this creative journey, our backers will be able to vote to decide which focal length we create next.
The Neptune Convertible Art Lens System has been handcrafted using the finest optics and utmost care. Each element is multi-coated, and the lens base has been specially designed to ensure that you can change the front components without exposing the mirror or sensor to dust or dirt and keep your lens in pristine condition. With three elements in three groups in the lens base and four elements in four groups in each of the convertible front components, this Art Lens System delivers exceptional quality at each of its fixed focal lengths. And because it works with a fully manual focusing system, you can hone your skills and take full creative control over your shot.
