LoGROcal is a sustainable business with a mission to grow the healthiest food in the most ecologically responsible way possible. Our purpose is to address two major challenges facing us today: too much waste and not enough food. We collect local agricultural waste materials such as spent beer grains and coffee grounds and transform them into healthy and delicious food in the form of oyster mushrooms. These mushrooms break down organic waste in nature and can be effectively utilized as a means of recycling and sustainable food production.
We've partnered with Ceres Park Ranch in Southwest Austin to transform a vacant house into a sustainable oyster mushroom farm. We will use the funds from our Kickstarter campaign to purchase equipment and retrofitting materials to complete the project by early Summer 2013. Once the farm is up and running our goal is to transform at least 10 tons of agricultural waste materials into healthy oyster mushrooms for thousands of families this year. With your support and the support of our friends and neighbors, we can create a business that can have a huge impact on the health and happiness of our community.
LoGROcal has teamed up with Stanley's Farmhouse Pizza and Jester King Brewery to create a unique sustainable food production system. We use agricultural waste from the brewery and local coffee shops to create our grow at home oyster mushroom kits and to grow fresh oyster mushrooms for Stanley's pizzas. After harvesting, our left over mushroom compost is used as an excellent organic soil amendment for local farms and community gardens. Utilizing mushroom mycelium in this way allows us to create multiple layers of social and ecological value from materials that were originally headed to a landfill.
Risks and challenges
LoGROcal has been constantly testing and refining our systems since our founding in August 2012. We've faced various challenges, but every setback has been an opportunity to expand our knowledge, skills and abilities and to refine our skills as organizers and planners. After many hours of strategizing and designing, we have narrowed down the potential challenges we face during and after this project into the following groups.
The first challenge we will face is the renovation and transformation of the existing building into an operational mushroom farm. We've already done a great deal of work on the structure but there still are some significant construction jobs to be done. Once the building is completed, we will move in and begin building the systems required to increase our production.
Another challenge will be maintaining the viability and purity of our mushroom spawn. Mushroom spawn acts as the seeds of the organism and must be cultivated in a sterile environment. This requires a fully functional laboratory and clean room where we can continuously test and monitor our mushroom cultures. We'll also need a system capable of consistent production of our fresh oyster mushrooms. To accomplish this, we'll need a grow room that is environmentally controlled within a specific set of ideal parameters.
We've tested and refined the above systems on a smaller scale and we have the plans and experience necessary to succeed in bringing a project like this to fruition. Our work ethic, organizational abilities and meticulous research combined with our insatiable passion for growing sustainable food is what will enable us to meet and transcend all of these challenges. What we really need now is your support to help us kick start our venture to the next level and become a fully operational sustainable mushroom farm.
