Massive is a unique exploration game in which you traverse through space in an advanced ship which amasses energy to behave as an artificial sun. It’s a game-changing new take on the classic incremental game genre, where the primary goal is no longer to just get as much energy as you can but to explore space, find new life and save your home.
The game takes on a planet in the far future that is so technologically advanced, it requires the energy output of a sun to maintain it. This is where you come in. By piloting an artificial sun, you can absorb the energy within spatial entities and send it back home to fuel your planet.
If we can reach our goal, the game will be completed by November 2017.
I have already developed a working prototype for the game with some of the features that will be present in the final game. Support is needed to ensure that I can devote enough time to this game to create a truly polished product that is feature-rich and fun to play.
With Kickstarter, completing Massive as I intended is on the horizon. With adequate funding, I will have the means necessary to finish Massive to a high standard and fulfill the goals which I have set out. With a successful campaign, Massive will be a feature-complete incremental game, with space exploration, crew management, and crafting. If stretch goals are reached I can ensure that additional goals will be met, as I will be able to dedicate time to add in a combat system, trading and multiplayer.
Massive at its core is an exploration game. The key goal here is to travel around endless space and search out new planets and entities. Perhaps one day you will come across an exploding star, or maybe struggle to accelerate away from a nearby black hole. The incremental game genre includes games such as Cookie Clicker, Clicker Heroes and Adventure Capitalist where the major ‘currency’ is either acquired by clicking or from objects which earn currency over time. Massive involves a different approach entirely. As an exploration game, you have to travel through space and find entities to consume yourself. You can make use of upgrades to help you get more energy from planets, for example, but exploring is key to amass the energy you need.
One key mechanic of Massive is using science in a fun way. Eventually, your artificial sun can become dense enough to create its own gravitational pull and cause nearby entities to be vacuumed into the sun and provide even more energy.
Customization is abundant in Massive. You can customize exactly how well your ship functions by crafting items and installing them into your ship. Exploring through different planets will land you with a wide array of blueprints, giving you the chance to customize your gameplay experience to your playstyle.
Through exploring you will find there are some planets which you cannot consume. Instead, you can land on them and learn more about their world. This will also offer you the chance to learn blueprints from them, recruit additional crew members, or mine for resources.
Your crew is an important part of running your ship, and by keeping them happy you can ensure that things will run smoothly. Crew management is another huge mechanic in Massive that can affect exactly how well your ship performs.
Our stretch goals include adding in a diverse combat system, where you will have to defend your sun against enemy combatants, wage war on planets to acquire their resources, trade with planets and potentially, encounter other real-life players in a multiplayer universe.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this Kickstarter. Massive is an ambitious game that we hope to release in November this year. Your support is key in helping this game become a success, so a big thank you in advance for checking out our game.
Risks and challenges
Massive is set in a universe with no limits, an endless space for you to explore and development wise that can bring issues down the road. In the past I have developed feature-rich toolkits which have been used by hundreds of users, and while like any project it has had some bugs through its lifetime, with time they have all been resolved.
The key problem we will encounter is time, to release the game by November I will need to dedicate my time to developing Massive and ensuring it is bug-free and polished. By supporting the game and backing the project, I will have the funding to do this.
If this project is successfully backed, there will be many backers who are waiting for the game, and in some cases for their rewards. Some rewards are limited in quantity so we can ensure they are delivered. Shipping out some of the physical items on time will be achievable, but there can always be delays due to posting items across the world. Digital copies of the game will be available to backers the day before the game officially launches.
If we are able to reach stretch goals, we may need to push back the release date of the game, to give adequate time to implement the new features while retaining a bug-free polished game.
The key way we will tackle any issue throughout this project will be through regular updates and communication on what is happening with Massive.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
