** Interviews posted! **

In honor of Earth Day and the March for Science, we've published our full interview with Laurie Allen of DataRefuge about protecting politically vulnerable data under the new administration. Read it here!

In the mood for more? We've also published an excerpt from our interview with Ka-Ping Yee & Valerie Aurora of the Never Again pledge. Check it out here!

** New Stretch Goal! ** At $9,500, we'll be able to commission four new long articles for upcoming Issue 3: JUSTICE.

Because of our print deadline for Tech Against Trump (the last day of this Kickstarter), we're unable to generate any more content for the book. But, we're excited to commission more articles for our Justice issue to continue the conversation.

We've gotten tons of great pitches for Justice, on subjects ranging from private prisons to 3D-printed guns to web-sleuthing, and we'd love to pay as many writers as possible to make Justice the deepest issue of Logic yet.

Additionally, we're using this Kickstarter to help determine the number of copies of Tech Against Trump we should order, so every backer counts!

~~~
Tech Against Trump is a new book chronicling the rising tide of tech resistance, assembled by the editors of Logic Magazine.
Since the election, we've been inspired by the explosion of anti-Trump energy from tech workers and technologists throughout the country.
They're pledging to refuse to build tools for domestic repression and pushing Silicon Valley to oppose the Administration's agenda. They're staging protests and walkouts, building new organizations and reinvigorating existing ones. They're teaching activists how to use encryption, and developing new technologies to thwart mass surveillance.
Tech Against Trump will bring together interviews with a wide range of individuals and groups fighting Trump with or within tech. We have a number of these interviews already completed, and we’re launching this project to raise funds for the costs associated with putting the book into the world.
Tech Against Trump
How are people using technology to disrupt Trumpism? How are folks working in tech—software engineers and security guards, product designers and cafeteria workers—building power and solidarity against Trump? And where do we go from here?
We're interviewing a wide range of individuals to help us answer these questions. Our goal is to create a document of the emerging anti-Trump tech movement, and to provide resources for further action. In the end, we’ll distribute this document as a beautifully printed book with an accompanying electronic version.
We are hoping to get the book in people’s hands as soon as possible. We need your help to raise the last funds to send the books to the printer, and to know how many copies we should print.
The Conversations
 Tech Against Trump will consist of a series of conversations with people fighting on a variety of different fronts. They include:
  • David Huerta, president of SEIU United Service Workers West, which represents thousands of janitors and security guards on tech campuses across Silicon Valley.
  • Valerie Aurora and Ka-Ping Yee, two of the organizers of the Never Again pledge, a public declaration by nearly 3,000 tech workers that they will refuse to build a database identifying people by race, religion, or national origin.
  • Laurie Allen, head of the Digital Scholarship Department at the University of Pennsylvania and a leading organizer of DataRefuge, which works to rescue vulnerable climate and environmental data from the Trump Administration.
  • Maciej Cegłowski, founder of Tech Solidarity, a new group which has become a leading hub for tech organizing against Trump.
  • Maria Noel Fernandez, campaign director of Silicon Valley Rising, a coalition of unions and community groups that organizes and advocates on behalf of tech service workers.
  • Matt Schaefer and Kristen Sheets from Tech Workers Coalition, an activist organization whose members organized the recent protest against Palantir, among other actions.
  • Nathan Schneider, a leading advocate for platform cooperativism.
  • Steve Phillips, digital security expert and guide at the Trump Preparedness hackathon hosted by San Francisco hackerspace Noisebridge.
  • Alex Gil, Digital Scholarship Coordinator for the Humanities and History at Columbia University, and co-organizer of the Electronic Device Security at the Border workshop.
  • Jason Putorti and Jen Aprahamian from Resistbot, a chat bot that decreases the barriers to civic engagement by taking texts from people and sending them to their members of Congress via fax or letter.
  • And more.
The Book
Tech Against Trump will be a printed book, though it will also be available digitally. We want it to be both a tool for organizing and a beautiful physical object. A lot of online content feels ephemeral. We’re excited to make a physical object that inspires conversation and action.
We will be working with McNaughton & Gunn, our existing printer for Logic, to bring this book into the world. The books will be 8.5 x 5.5” softcover books, with black and white high-weight pages and a full-color matte cover. The quote describes this cover format as “Luxury Matte Film Lamination.” Having felt samples, we agree: it’s velvety. Very nice hand-feel.
Tech Against Trump will feature illustrations by Gretchen Röehrs, a San Francisco-based artist, friend, and owner of an impressively misbehaved beagle. Gretchen will be contributing portraits of the individuals we interview, as well as drawings of protesters from the recent actions against the Muslim ban at SFO airport.
What is Logic?
Logic Issue 1: INTELLIGENCE cover and interior
Logic Issue 1: INTELLIGENCE cover and interior
Logic is a new magazine devoted to deepening the discourse around technology, founded by a team of writers, engineers, and designers. We created it because we want to demystify technology, and break down the wall that the tech industry tries to build between itself and the rest of the world.
We publish three issues per year, each on a particular theme. We’ve just released our inaugural issue, Intelligence, featuring pieces on a wide range of topics—from DIY brain scanners to the feminization of front-end coding. Next up is Sex, to be published this summer, and our third issue, Justice, will be coming this fall. These issues will cover everything from encryption for smart sex toys to regulatory issues around 3D printers that print guns.
We believe strongly in paying writers and artists for their work; as a result, currently 60% of our costs go to commissioning the writing and art that appear in our issues. Your subscription to Logic directly contributes to supporting our writers and increasing the number of pieces we can commission for each issue.
To learn more about us and what we’re hoping to accomplish, read our manifesto.
Stretch Goals
We've met our funding! Thanks to you all, we can now send Tech Against Trump to print. We're still using this Kickstarter to determine how many copies to order, so every backer counts.
Here's what will happen the more money we raise:
$6,000 - ACHIEVED! Donating 100 Copies of Tech Against TrumpWe'll donate 100 copies of Tech Against Trump to various non-profits and public institutions! A survey will be sent out to backers to nominate recipient organizations after the campaign ends.
$7,500 - ACHIEVED! Commissioning two new articles for Issue 3: JUSTICE! Because of our pressing print deadline for Tech Against Trump (the last day of this Kickstarter), we're unable to generate any more content for the book. But, we're excited to commission more articles for our upcoming Justice issue to continue the conversation. We've gotten tons of great pitches, on subjects ranging from private prisons to 3D-printed guns to web-sleuthing, and we'd love to pay as many writers as possible to make Justice the deepest issue of Logic yet.
$9,500 - Commissioning four new articles for Issue 3: JUSTICE! Keep those new articles coming! At this level, we're able to commission two additional new long articles for the upcoming Justice issue, for a total of four. We're excited to bring even more critical voices to these crucial issues.
Risks and challenges
We’ve already conducted the bulk of the interviews we plan on doing for the book, and have the rest queued up. In addition, we’ll be reusing a lot of the layout work that went into creating our design templates for our first issue, and working with our existing printer.
The main risks involve when the book comes out. We are all donating our time to work on this while we work full-time jobs, so if things catch on fire at work it might delay the production of particular parts of the book.
In addition, while we’ve working with our printer’s digital department, this will be the first time we are working with the offset team. It’s possible there will be something unexpected about this process and we will have to go back and forth a few times with proofs to get it looking just right.
We plan on distributing the books ourselves with the help of friends bribed with pizza and beer. If the volume of books that need to be shipped crosses some TBD high threshold, it may take us a bit to get them all out, or alternatively, find and work with a distributor.
