What is LockBox?
The LockBox is a smart mailbox for parcels, which makes it possible to receive parcels when you are not at home. It has a smart bluetooth lock that can be accessed opened with a pin code or through the LockBox app. In the app you can decide who has access. This enables your parcel courier to open your LockBox and deliver your parcel. Your parcel will wait for you, instead of the other way around! The modern Dutch design makes the LockBox a sexy addition to your house. The LockBox will be available in all European countries.
How does it work?
Newskool: You can distribute access to your LockBox through the app. Couriers have Trusted Delivery Profiles which you can grant access to your LockBox. Couriers can request access to your LockBox based on the LockBox ID that is displayed on the outside of the lock.
With the new LockBox App you can grant access to your courier, family, and friends. In the app you can manage who has access and when they have access. You can revoke access or distribute a ‘one time access’ pass. Employees of delivery companies can setup ‘trusted profiles’ so you can safely grant access. The LockBox lock has a unique ID displayed on the outside so couriers or friends can request access in their app for that specific ID. You will immediately get a notification of this request for access. You decide to give access and for how long.
The app will give you an overview of who opened the LockBox through the app. And, it's not only about receiving packages. A friend is driving by to pick up that book you borrowed? No worries, put it in your LockBox and let your friend pick it up at any time!
Oldskool: The lock can also be accessed with a pin code when you don't walk around with your phone all day. You can change the PIN code of your LockBox any time (at the lock or through your app). When shopping online, simply enter the pin code of your LockBox in the address line, for example: Jones (LockBox pin: 1234). The pin code will be automatically printed on the address label of the parcel and your courier will see it and open your LockBox with it.
We have developed this innovative lock together with a number of different partners that are excellent in software (access management) and hardware (locks). The software is IPV68 graded and uses secure communication protocols, ensuring protection against hacking. Of course we designed the hardware to make sure your parcel is safe. Because we are so convinced of the safety of the LockBox, we even guarantee the contents of the LockBox against theft. Is your package stolen? You will get a refund up to 500 euros. Furthermore, the LockBox and the lock are water-resistant and can function within a wide temperature range.
In 2014 we started our pilot project and eventually sold 300 LockBoxes to pilot users throughout the Netherlands. The pilot model only works with a pincode lock. We sold several iterations of the product where we improved water-resistance and durability by changing coatings and adding stainless steel elements. Furthermore we enlarged the mail slot. But we also improved on simpeler things like introducing better packaging to make sure that customers receive the LockBox in one piece.
With the addition of the smart bluetooth lock the new LockBox will be an even greater product that will make online shopping a much more pleasant and safer experience! Of course we encountered instances where the pilot product malfunctioned and let its users down. We always to tried to solve the problems as fast as we could for our customers. They often told us "thanks for solving the problem because we cannot live without the LockBox anymore." How awesome is that! The pilot project gave us a huge amount of experience thanks to which we can safely say that the new LockBox won't let you down.
Meet Gerdine! One of the 300 happy pilot-users of the LockBox: "After work I always pick up the children from school. I often miss our package deliverer. As I have the LockBox, I don't worry anymore about having to pick up my package from the post office, since I know it will always be delivered in my LockBox!"
LockBox is 75 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm (29.5 inch x 15.75 inch x 11.8 inch). Therefore, the maximum parcel size is 48 cm x 29.5 cm x 28 cm (18.9 inch x 11.6 inch x 11 inch). This makes it very suitable for receiving most of your online orders. About 80% of your online purchases should fit in the LockBox.
The LockBox lock is powered by 2 AAA batteries. Because the lock only uses energy when you open it, you can open the lock up to 20,000 times before the batteries are depleted. When the batteries are depleted you will be notified in your app and each time you open the box you will hear an extra sound signal. If you do not replace the batteries within 500 times of opening it, you can still externally provide power to the lock with the included cable and a 9-volt battery (not included). The included AAA batteries are alkaline batteries. These do not leak and are ideally suited to provide the necessary long-term power.
The installation of the LockBox is very easy. We will include a paper drilling template, plugs and screws. Stick the drilling template on the wall and drill the holes that are indicated. Insert the plugs and attach LockBox to the wall using the screws. It will take about 5 minutes. Watch the video below to see how its done!
About the creators
LockBox was started by two Dutch brothers, Gerald and Mathieu van Kooten. Together they embarked on an adventure to realise one of the many creative ideas they have. Dedicated to LockBox, both Gerald and Mathieu have spent a lot of time next to their jobs and studies to make this project a success. Together, they make a great team, and their skills and talents complement and reinforce each other.
This is a pie-chart containing the cost breakdown for our project. We worked out a financial plan in detail, to overcome unforeseen costs, and to be able to give you an impression of what your money will be used for.
To overcome any unforeseen difficulties we have carefully planned out our journey! The following timeline shows our estimation of the production process of LockBox.
Risks and challenges
In our pilot project we have proven that we can deliver a usable product that is already an excellent solution, although it has a 'dumb' lock. Making the lock smart with the addition of bluetooth connectivity and an app is our challenge. We have contracted two very skilled partner companies that will help is in developing the necessary software and hardware. Both partners have proven products/solutions out there and are in business for more than 10 years. It is our goal to bring these technologies together in one smart solution for an affordable price.
We can guarantee you that we will make mistakes. We will also guarantee you that we will do everything to learn from our mistakes and in the end deliver you a product that we can be very proud of.
Video: we used our pilot product in the making of our videos and pictures. The lock that is shown in the video is our 'dumb' pin code lock. The smart lock is designed in similar style but the end product may look a little bit different.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
