LOCATE Arts Launch

$53,033

We’re founding LOCATE Arts to help you find the best contemporary visual art in Tennessee.

LOCATE Arts will serve the local art community and will help an international audience discover the most cutting edge contemporary art being shown in one of the most dynamic regions of the American South.

One of the best kept secrets in the state of Tennessee is its burgeoning contemporary art scene, from the 4 major cities to the smaller places in between. We want the world to know about it.

With the launch of LOCATEarts.org, you will be able to click on a map to find a curated list of the best contemporary art exhibitions currently on view -- from galleries to underground artist-run spaces to museums -- and the information on how to access them.

The infrastructure is in place and we are ready to go! We need you and your support specifically to:

1) launch the website, a living resource of contemporary art activity in the big and small cities across the state. Your donation will mean this vision can be a reality in the next 3 months.

2) Develop a Tennessee artist registry for contemporary artists.

3) Create a statewide gallery night to showcase Tennessee's contemporary art establishments.

LOCATEarts.org will help Tennesseans and the world find the best contemporary art the state has to offer.

Our rewards are drawn from within the deep well that is contemporary art talent in Tennessee. In addition to access to LOCATE Arts campaign parties, t-shirts and tote bags, we have an array of special limited edition prints from artists along with a few amazing original works of art (SEE IMAGES BELOW).

Join us in this movement to connect and promote contemporary art in Tennessee.

Vision Statement: LOCATE Arts serves Tennessee by anchoring and spotlighting the contemporary visual art scenes in each region and fostering a unified statewide art scene. Our programs promote art dialogue between the different cities in the state, and between the state and the nation.

Who are we? In addition to being artists themselves, Brian and Carri Jobe have previous art world management and non-profit experience for organizations in Tennessee, Texas, and New York. They have a deep passion to see the vibrant contemporary art communities of Tennessee thrive. (Learn more about Brian, Carri and the LOCATE Arts Board of Directors and Support Staff in our Bio.)

LOCATE Arts is sponsored project of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. LOCATE Arts is in process of becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Quotes from Board Members:

ANDREA ZIEHER, Principal, Zieher Smith & Horton Gallery: “An esteemed British contemporary art dealer recently told me "I hear Nashville is the coolest city in America, and I can't wait to go there." From Memphis to Knoxville, Tennessee has become a magnet for cultural tourists drawn to well publicized attractions including music, historical and culinary destinations; however they have no idea how to tap into the contemporary art scene. I was shocked to hear from an established New York collecting couple that they had recently traveled to Tennessee and didn't visit a single museum or gallery because they simply did not know where to go to see contemporary art. LOCATE Arts is absolutely crucial to expose and support the visual arts community both to locals and out of state visitors, alike.”

WINN ELLIOTT, Entrepreneur and Consultant: “The sustainability and recognition of Tennessee’s contemporary art scene is a cornerstone of the state’s economic growth and business development. LOCATE Arts will absolutely serve business owners in countless ways.”

LAIN YORK, Director, Zeitgeist Gallery : How do you think LOCATE Arts will affect the perception of contemporary art in Tennessee? “More communication between the studio communities is crucial and directly affects regional museums, academic programs, state and city arts commissions, commercial galleries, and independent artist-run initiatives. Conduits like these industry hubs will have a more articulate sense of what artists are doing to pass along to supporting constituencies. The initial conversations of LOCATE Arts are already giving contemporary art a higher profile in Tennessee.”

How will LOCATE Arts help you as an artist? “The website will provide me a resource for contemporary art venues and will facilitate networking not only in Tennessee but also regionally, nationally, and internationally.”

VADIS TURNER, Artist and Curator: Why did you get involved in LOCATE Arts? “As a recent transplant from NYC, I am thankful to be part of an organization that gives a far reaching voice to professional artists across Tennessee.”

Why is LOCATE Arts needed? “LOCATE Arts promotes and bridges the gap between innovative exhibitions across Tennessee. It also serves as a platform to showcase the work of sophisticated regional artists with an active studio practice.”

LAUREN KENNEDY, Executive Director, UrbanArt Commission "LOCATE Arts represents an opportunity to comprehensively show the rest of the country and art world at large the strength and scale of contemporary art being made across the state of Tennessee. As someone actively engaged in the creative community in Memphis and interacting with artists and organizers across the state, I know there is a wealth of good art, ideas and people. But we need a greater platform to connect with each other and to leverage the energy and momentum happening in Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga collectively. LOCATE Arts will be that resource."

Risks and challenges

If we have any setbacks in getting rewards to our backers, it will be due to logistics of securing and shipping artwork. In the unlikely event that an artist does not provide the artwork they have promised, we will find replacement art from another artist. Our priority is to make sure we provide high quality Tennessee-based contemporary art that our supporters enjoy.

In general, if we encounter any snags in the delivery of in rewards, we will be in contact with you to make sure you know about the timeline and are satisfied with what your are receiving.
