About this project
What is Disc Golf Unchained?
Disc Golf Unchained arose directly from our passion for the sport of disc golf. Disc golf is a remarkably fast growing recreational activity, and to some (including us), a serious sport. The sport is played by people of all ages, and no one is excluded from the game due to a lack of expensive equipment or high-priced club memberships. Disc golf is a sport for anyone and everyone! Disc Golf Unchained looks to capture the excitement and experience of throwing the perfect shot and bring it to the palm of your hand. We attempted to create realistic flight physics and course environments that, along with a complex player progression system, offer a fun and engaging game anyone can enjoy, just like actual disc golf.
The game is slated for release on Android and iOS sometime in 2014, and we have developed an extremely intuitive touch interface for the game on these platforms. Although we intend to initially release Disc Golf Unchained on mobile devices, advancements in human interface technology and online networks for next-gen consoles have us thinking about the full potential of disc golf in the virtual world. Imagine throwing a round with or against your friends at your beautiful local course, but from the comfort of your respective living rooms! The prospects for Disc Golf Unchained are very exciting.
Flight Physics/Discs- Flight was, without a doubt, one of the primary objectives for the development of Disc Golf Unchained. The main goal with the Flight Engine was to produce believable flight from any disc you desire to throw. Many disc properties are taken into account in the game: stability, distance (speed/glide), mold type, weight, plastic type, and condition just to name a few. Throw types including backhand, sidearm and overhand create those familiar flight paths that you know and love. Assemble your real-life bag or experiment with new combinations of properties to try a completely new disc. The attention to detail in the Flight Engine pays off by allowing for a seemingly unlimited number of disc and throw combinations to suit any style of play.
Course Engine/Editor- The Course Engine tests the limits of beauty and realism in a disc golf video game. Courses are dynamically created, taking into account every aspect of the environment, from the landscape and vegetation to the weather. Be wary though, adjusting the conditions may make that open, easy course into a bear! Soon you will be able to harness the power of the course engine to create your own courses with the Disc Golf Unchained Course Editor. Mold the terrain, place your teepads and baskets (with multiple options for each hole if you so desire), or add some vegetation for some sweet tree love. Nothing is quite like knowing a course like the back of your hand, but it is especially sweet when you designed it. The Course Engine and Course Editor aim to support a variety of environments and provide the tools to accurately model realistic disc golf courses. In the future, you may even see some of your local courses available to play in Disc Golf Unchained!
Gameplay Progression- We didn't want to stop at just having a pretty disc flight simulator, although Disc Golf Unchained could be used as such. We wanted to create (and play!) a great video game. An immersive leveling system will allow you to upgrade base attributes and learn new skills, much like advancing in the sport in real life. As you progress through Disc Golf Unchained, you get to unlock and experience exciting new courses and hole configurations that promise hours of engaging gameplay. Throughout the game, you will build and tweak an impressive stack of your favorite discs that will light up the chains!
Music- We have a fantastic band out of Madison, WI, providing the soundtrack for Disc Golf Unchained. Red Rose puts down some of the funkiest, spaciest grooves out there, and the music fits perfectly into the game. You may find yourself sucked into, not only the beautiful environments in the game, but also the trippy loops Red Rose provides. If you would like to hear more of their music or check on their tour schedule, take a look at the Red Rose website.
Why Disc Golf Unchained Will Succeed
There is a large group of people that have been waiting for a game like Unchained. Both disc golf and mobile games have exploded in popularity recently with the rise of championship-level courses and smartphones, especially among young people. The number of disc golf courses has more than doubled in the last ten years. Likewise, the number of mobile gamers has topped 100 million in the United States alone. The game will speak for itself when folks are exposed to it. We need to steadily build our audience, and then all it takes is getting the right exposure to explode in popularity.
Disc Golf Unchained will act as a bridge to bring disc golf to the digital world. There is a hole in the market for realistic disc golf video games, and there are very few disc golf video games in general. Unchained was developed by disc golfers to really capture the essence of the sport and bring it into the digital realm. The game will hit on more aspects of disc golf than any that has preceded it, while still being accessible to non-disc golfers. We really hope that Disc Golf Unchained will expose our favorite sport to people who wouldn't otherwise have come across it.
Mike Batka runs Glide Disc Golf, a successful disc golf retail shop in Madison, WI. We had the opportunity to sit down and talk with him about his thoughts on Disc Golf Unchained.
Please take a moment to check out his website. He does a great job promoting the sport and is really involved in the local disc golf community. If you are ever in Madison, stop by and check out his shop across the street from Hiestand Disc Golf Course.
How Backing the Project Will Help
Disc Golf Unchained is still in development. The initial release of the game will be on the Android and iOS. To effectively develop the game on these platforms, we need to upgrade and add to our collection of software, hardware, licensing, and equipment. With these additional resources, we can continue to improve the release version of the game and make sure that it is available on anyone's preferred mobile device . Upgrading our systems in a timely manner will ensure that we can develop Disc Golf Unchained for a variety of devices as quickly as possible. Kickstarter funding would allow us to perform these necessary upgrades.
We both devote as much time as we can to developing Disc Golf Unchained, but being independent developers, we also need to support ourselves and our families. For Local Route Labs to produce high quality media at an efficient rate, we need to be able to give more time to our projects. We are working to turn Local Route Labs into our full-time job, but until then we are limited in the amount of time we can spend developing the game. It is not to say that the development of Disc Golf Unchained is coming along slowly by any means. We continue to add to the project every day, and piece by piece, Disc Golf Unchained is coming together. The biggest question is not if, but when the game will be finished.
The Kickstarter funding will also allow us to market our game properly. There are many events in both the disc golf and video game communities that would be perfect for displaying Disc Golf Unchained. Traveling and setting up displays at disc golf tournaments and events, as well as video game expos and conventions, is expensive, but it is one of the best ways to get a project out to the public.
Why Local Route Labs is the Right Company to Produce Disc Golf Unchained
Local Route Labs has the ambition and ability to make Disc Golf Unchained a reality. Both Adam and Tyler bring a unique, yet complimentary, skill set to the project. Adam's education, more than 10 years of experience in the Information Technology industry, and willingness to learn new concepts and software make him just the person to tackle any design or technical issue that pops up. After building a relevant and extensive list of skills and contacts working in a variety of businesses, Tyler is able to create and maintain the connections necessary to ensure that all aspects of development are looked after. Tyler and Adam are able to work through any issues outside of their respective skill sets through collaboration and creative problem solving.

If you would like to know more about Local Route Labs and stay current on news about the company and Disc Golf Unchained, take a look at our website and connect to our Facebook or Twitter pages.
Breaking into video game development would not have been possible without the versatile, powerful development tool, Unity. Head over to their website for more information.
We have a variety of in-game, material, and event-based incentives that we are sure will pique your interest. Raising awareness of disc golf is important to us, and some of our incentives definitely reflect that. We are also happy to offer content and opportunities to contribute to the game that are only available to Kickstarter backers. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions about any of our incentives. Enjoy!
*Note: Some incentive levels have you choose between SPON and DNAM. See the incentive sidebar for details.
UPDATE: Here's the newest video blog from Terry Miller a/k/a The Disc Golf Guy from the Demo Event we ran at Glide on 11/20/13. It was a great time, and Terry definitely captured the essence of the event in his video and interview. Special thanks to Glide Disc Golf, Ale Asylum, Ian's Pizza, and Trixie's Liquor for sponsoring the event and providing great food and drink! It was great to see everyone out there!
Risks and challenges
There are very few risks associated with developing Disc Golf Unchained. Local Route Labs is a small, independent developer, so we are able to be agile and adapt to most situations that come up. We have invested a lot into developing the game, but most of that investment is in the form of time. Likewise, the most important resource that we need to complete Disc Golf Unchained is time.
The biggest challenge we face is coming up with enough time to work on the game, but even if it takes longer than we'd like, the project will be finished. After that, it is all about getting the game into the hands of our audience. We will work hard through word-of-mouth, social media, and other avenues of marketing to make sure that people are aware of the game. We will also try to ensure that Disc Golf Unchained will be available to as many people on their mobile devices as possible.
We just want to offer our sincere thanks to everyone that has helped us along with Disc Golf Unchained. Our family and friends, who haven't seen much of us recently.
