At Fail Squad Games, we offer rousing content for your tabletop roleplaying games, never hard and fast rules. What follows in this and upcoming issues of Maximum HP are articles, notes, tips, tricks, traps, and treasures for your 1E gaming table. To keep the zines fresh and exciting, we have liberated ourselves from a production deadline to allow us to channel maximum creativity into each issue. Content will be nurtured, not rushed, and chosen as inspiration strikes or from where we see a need at our own tables.
The majority of these zines are intended for GMs, but players may also find much of the content interesting and, hopefully, inspiring. We do suggest that players not read the adventure section if their GM intends to run the adventure.
Our intent is to share the Fail Squad Games style with other old school gamers to enrich their gaming experience. The zine format will present small, easy to digest articles firmly rooted in the spirit of the older edition games. Although the content may be informal, we want the physical product and presentation to be the best we can deliver for the cost.
In our inaugural issue, we explore the dwarven community of Dwarfhome mountain in Artera. We chose to focus on dwarves this issue because there are so many possible directions to go with them rather than presenting them as just dour short people with Scottish accents. Though we focus on Dwarfhome, the information and quest provided can be inserted into any dwarven society to bring life to your old school campaigns.
From here we catalyze your creativity with our world of imagination, ideas, and quests. So, grab your dice good adventurer, grab your books good GMs, and get ready for Maximum HP!!
Welcome to Artera, welcome to Fail Squad Games!
Each issue is 5.5″ x 8.5″ (Booklet size) paperback with a card stock gloss color cover and Black & White interior. We are at 31-32 pages of content before ads this issue. Expect the contents to be gritty for your Advanced RPG game but the zine to be polished for smooth play.
This first introductory issue will be perfect bound and printed on high quality paper with a full color card stock cover. It hardly qualifies as a 'zine, but we want our milestone issues to be special.
This issue and all that follow contain content, characters, NPCs, adventure hooks and other tools for the old school GM to keep their table interesting and memorable.
This issue we even have a full short adventure in the Dwarfhome mountain!
We'll be bringing in guest writers, artists and others to add to each issue so things won't get boring or stale.
House rules, new magic, new items, new monster, and exploration of Artera (The Fail Squad Games world) await in each new issue. We're adding new content all the time and are eager to share it with you!
No two issues are the same, and the content is always bringing a fresh perspective to your table and gaming style.
It's time for Stretch Goals!! We've been working on some possibilities and here we go!!
- $1650 - More Magic!! At $1650 we add another page of dwarven magic items
- $2000 - More Mounts!! At $2,000 we add more unusual dwarven mounts for your campaign world with notes on how to integrate them.
- $2800 - Dwarven Villains!! We add some dwarven kin the good folk of Dwarfhome would rather not discuss!
We decided to come to Kickstarter to launch Maximum HP to get things off the ground. We aren't offering subscriptions at this point because we want to maximize the creativity and take the pressure of deadliness off our writers and artists.
We are considering a number of models going forward. At this time, a short-run Kickstarter for each issue seems like the most sensible approach until we have enough momentum to change venues.
Issue #001 is the Dwarfhome issue. Everything has a dwarven theme behind it and adds a memorable series of bearded flavor to your campaign world. Each issue has a general theme behind it as we look closer at unique settings, races, or ideas.
This project is not a zine quest. We had another project running when Zine Quest was live. Our printer also treats us well on upgraded binding and covers. Why produce lesser quality for a similar printing cost?
So as much fun as the Zine Quest was, and sounded we missed the dates and preferred the upgrade in product quality. We're looking into other printers to possibly move to saddle stitching in the future, but so far the cost difference has been negligible. So we are perfect bound and cardstock covers!
We've added a new backer level to include our Mini Mod character sheets. these are form pads with 25 pages each, printed single side with a simple 1E character sheet.
These are great for NPCs, convention play, or just as back up character sheets on the fly! Just hop onto the GM bundle level to get yours!!
Be advised that we're working toward keeping costs low, the true 'zine feel, and delivery simple. Non collectible print copies are shipped in "Rigid Mailers" instead of our usual corrugated boxes. This means that some rough handling and folding may occur during shipping. Rigid mailers should protect from most shipping damage, but deliver people love to try to fold things in mailboxes for some reason!
Signed and numbered copies or other collectible copies ship in the corrugated boxes we use in other projects.
*NOTE* standard shipping for regular copies is in Rigid Mailers! Mail delivery MAY result in some wear and tear

This Kickstarter is not so different from the other 15 or so we have run. The same printers are in place, the same creators, the same editors.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
