Hey friends, I'm LMan.
The SID Chip club is my new album featuring techno and house tracks, played back by a 1980s Commodore 64 home computer.
The limitations of that machine and its legendary 3-voice sound chip called "SID", combined with some nifty programming, result in a special kind of sound. All tracks will be recorded from a real C64 with the 8580 sound chip.
New DJ friendly extended versions of my tracks:
- Age We Aceed
- Venus Falling
- Mo's Techno Logy
- UPDATE 2019-04-26: Deep Kiss released at Revision party 2019 in Saarbrücken.
Those four, as well as four additional brand new tracks will be featured on the album. "Deep Kiss" reached #2 at the Revision oldskool music compo in Saarbrücken.
As you can hear, while these are technically 100% chiptunes, the style is not "chiptune" - it really is something unique.
The Vinyl Record
"SID Chip Club" will be released on a high quality, 160g yellow vinyl record with a special black splatter effect. The pressing will be performed carbon neutrally by an experienced manufacturer.
The available vinyl records are limited to 450. The serial numbers on the collector's edition will be handed out first-come-first-served; meaning early backers get the lower numbers. :-)
UPDATE 2019-04-29: A small number of plain black vinyl records are now available too. It was brought to our attention, that in a club environment the yellow patterned vinyl is irritating to the DJ.
The C64 Cartridge
The record is accompanied by a digital music disk, that can be downloaded and played back directly on your c64 with a nice presentation. Cartridges, which you can plug into your Commodore without the need for a floppy drive are available too! The advantages of a cartridge are:
- Will contain the music disk with minimum loading times
- No floppy drive needed, no disk flipping
- Will be assembled and flashed by our experienced friends from RGCD
- and of course, it's a physical product compared to a mere .d64 file
The project will be supported by Uwe (THCM), who codes the sample sound engine* and the music disk, as well as by Christian (SID Spieler), who organized the "C64 Vinyl Tribute" album in 2018. He will oversee recording, mastering and manufacturing.

Bonus Goodie: The Sources
If you're interested in doing SID music with samples yourself, you're in for a treat. Upon kickstarter success, we are determined to release Uwe's conversion tool, which is used to combine the SIDs with the samples, along with the source music files for these tracks:
- Deep Kiss (showcasing the looper features)
- Venus Falling (default mode as used in MultiStyle Labs "Modern Love Classics")
- Rastaline Dub (showcasing the echo feature)
The source files each consist of a Protracker compatible .mod file, and a CheeseCutter file. Here's the caveat though, I've used an unpublished alpha build of CheeseCutter for these releases. Abaddon, who codes the editor, has plans for releasing it some time in autumn.
Bonus Goodie: Remixes
Exclusive remixes will be added to the digital album by various artists, the first one coming from famed remixer DHS of The SoundWavers. Teo will be doing a remix too!
Go for it!
So if you're either a DJ looking for exotic new material, or a fan of my music, or enthusiastic for the Commodore sound, pledge for the "SID Chip Club".
Thanks for your support!
*The SID part of the sound is programmed in Abaddon's CheeseCutter editor.
Risks and challenges
The music disk and cartridge will ONLY support the new SID 8580 chip. It will not sound good on a 6581 chip.
Just for the record (pun intended), the black splatter effect pattern will be a bit different on each record. It might be stronger or smaller than on the example picture. Also note that the yellow of the record is translucent. In fact the whole design might be changed.
The release date is a rough estimate. I'm committed to deliver in time though.
We apologize for the UK shipping costs, we have to assume that by the time the album ships, Brexit will have happened.
We'll have to peel a bit of the cellophane wrapping for the collector's records so we can write the serials and signatures on them.
Six tracks will be around 6 minutes in length, two tracks have to be shorter, around 3 minutes due to physical limitations of the record.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
