About this project
Two Redheads & A Dead Blonde is the first book in the Ronan Marino Mystery Series.
As a successful local novel released by a small publisher, it has done very well in sales and received good reviews. With the increase in popularity of comic books and graphic novels, it’s a perfect story to be told visually; most especially in the B&W style we’ve chosen for the project. The Ronan Marino Mystery series also includes two other full-length novels Chasing Curves and The Vicious Cycle as well as a short story called Russians, Runaways & The Raven which was featured in the short story compilation River Muse: Tales from Lowell & The Merrimack Valley.
The novel is a hard-boiled detective noir story in the tradition or Parker's Spenser or Spillane's Mike Hammer. It features private detective Ronan Marino; the half Italian/half Irish (he often jokes that due to his ethnic makeup he likes to drink whiskey, write poetry then go out and break a few legs) son of a retired firefighter, nephew to an alleged Boston Mafia Don and combat veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. With a strong sense of honor and duty learned from his father and strengthened in the military, Ronan chooses to help those who have no other place to turn; using the catch phrase "the best that money can't buy.
A native of Lowell, Massachusetts (best known for author Jack Kerouac and boxer Mickey Ward of "The Fighter"), he graduated from Lowell High School and went on to UMass-Lowell, where he was the starting shortstop for the baseball team. After graduation, rather than chase a professional baseball career (you’re just too short the scouts told him), he joined the U.S. Air Force, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and assigned to the Office of Special Investigations. After twelve years in the service, including multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and a bad marriage that left more scars than his time in the war zones, he had an amazing stroke of good luck.
Stopping for a cup of coffee one night while on an undercover job in Los Angeles, on a whim he played and won the biggest jackpot in the history of the California lottery. Leaving the military, he moved home where he planned on doing nothing more than pursuing his hobbies; like playing guitar in a pedestrian cover band and improving his vast collection of comic books. His retirement however was short lived after his new girlfriend is found dead in the cold waters of the Merrimack River. Using all the skills he learned in the military, Ronan uncovers her dark secret; one that powerful men on both sides of the law are desperate to remain hidden. Calling on his mob enforcer cousin for backup, Ronan dives headfirst into places where even angels fear to tread; committed to finding who took his girlfriend's life even at the cost of his own.
THE GRAPHIC NOVEL:
I firmly believe that with the right artist, Two Redheads & A Dead Blonde can find a large audience of readers who not only enjoy graphic novels, but mystery/action & adventure stories infused with humor. There have been a number of similar projects that have been highly successful in the detective genre including of course probably the most famous, Frank Miller’s Sin City which was turned into a successful film (and a soon to be released sequel). Another example is Two Guns by Steven Grant and Mat Santolouco which spawned a recent hit film. I’ve found that artist in Alex Cormack, a talented young up and comer whose work has been featured in Image Comics as well as various other independent comic companies.
Below are some promotional samples of the artwork Alex has done for this project to give you an idea of the artistic direction we're going for.
With your backing, Two Redheads & A Dead Blonde could be an independent hit and lead to the other books in the Ronan Marino Mystery Series being translated into graphic novels as well as transition to other forms of media.
USE OF FUNDING:
The funding will be used to compensate the artist, cover the cost of the rewards and market & promote the book at events such as the 2014 New York & Boston Comic Cons and in print ads.
The funding breakdown is as follows:
Art - Approximately $6000
Rewards - Approximately $1000
Marketing & Sales: $1500

Risks and challenges
My full-time career is a program manager for a large government agency. In that role, I currently manage a $1.6 Billion global information technology program. I have successfully been managing large efforts like this for the past 15 plus years including a project manager stint at Walt Disney World. I manage production schedules, funding and the performance of my team to ensure for successful programs. I am also skilled at working with talent to balance creativity with budgets and schedule.
In addition to that, I am one of the partners in Sons of Liberty Publishing, the company that published the Ronan Marino novels as well as a number of other successful books including Mike Girard's "Psycho Chicken & Other Foolish Tales" which sold thousands of copies. I have a lot of experience working with artists, meeting deadlines and all the many challenges that go with packaging a book for production. For many print efforts on Kickstarter, I am sure there is a learning curve/challenge for critical tasks like converting the pages into a high resolution print read file. I've mastered these tasks and am confident I will be able to keep this effort on schedule to be ready for launch at New York Comic Con in October 2014.
On top of that, I was fortunate to find a talented artist in Alex Cormack that only lives 15 minutes away so we can spend a lot of time in person collaborating on the book as we go through the creative process and then in the marketing phase of the project.
I am highly confident that I have the storytelling talent, discipline and business acumen to make this project a huge success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
