The PROJECT: Aartz West, a teaching studio.
I believe in the power of Art.
Art is magical. It can heal, inspire, help develop critical thinking skills, communicate, or just make our lives more beautiful, more interesting and more informed. It can help us find new answers to enduring problems.
Humanity needs art!
And also, it's just plain fun!
Finally, after many years in the U.S. and South America, creating, exhibiting and teaching art, I’ve returned to Santa Fe, New Mexico to open my dream studio: Aartz West. I need your help to fulfill that dream.
In high school I dreamed of an art studio brimming with supplies, equipment, beautiful books and art. It wasn't going to be just for me. It was meant to be big enough to do my own work, but also a space to share and teach aspiring artists of all ages.
Aartz West will be chock full of art materials and inspiration, a creative haven. Students in my workshops and classes have always used high quality artists' materials. They also have the opportunity to watch a professional artist (That's me!) at work. Watching my paintings and sculpture evolve often opens new possibilities such as trying a new technique, color combination or style.
Your contributions will support the rental of THE PERFECT studio space with about 1000 sq. ft., good light, a library of great books (I already have a start on that!) and much more. It will also support the purchase of art supplies, a new or used kiln, advertising and insurance.
I have a BFA from the University of New Mexico and an MFA in clay sculpture from Maryland Institute College of Art. I've exhibited my paintings and sculpture nationally and internationally. Over the years I have worked with a multitude of artistic techniques and materials, exploring many topics.
I love what I do, and thoroughly enjoy sharing it!
Teaching comes naturally to me. I've studied many different art processes, techniques and materials. I've taught at every educational level in public and private schools and colleges. During my many years as an artist and educator I have worked with thousands of students on two continents and in eight states. In fact, while I was teaching in Vermont public schools I was honored as Art Educator of the Year by the Vermont Alliance for Arts in Education.
After many years away, I am thrilled to be back in Santa Fe! This 400+ year old city is filled with art, galleries, artists and people eager to learn more about creative processes! With a population of 68,000 there are more than 100 art galleries and 16 museums! And there are also more than 70 public and private schools here in the K-12 range, which means that there are many potential students for after-school, weekend and summer camp classes who are just waiting for Aartz West to open!
Yes, there are other art schools available, but Aartz West will provide a unique and exciting alternative. I am already in touch with educational administrators in various schools, and several adults have expressed interest in working with me. I'm already starting!
I can’t wait to begin in the new Aartz West studio! Don't wait to pick out your reward!
Among the rewards are several different prints available on paper and on canvas. Below are the ones available on paper. Scroll down for the images available on canvas.
The following paintings are available as reproductions on canvas.
For nine years while living in Brandon, Vermont, my husband and I had our own gallery & frame shop. I also had my studio and taught classes in the building. Then Hurricane Irene happened. The building across the street was washed out into the road. Our building took a direct hit. We had to close the business.
It was a sign for us to head west!
Now I am finally home again in Santa Fe!
I'm excited and ready to begin a new chapter! Aartz West.
Will you join me?
Risks and challenges
•The first challenge is to find the perfect studio space for Aartz West. I'm in contact with several realtors and am confident that by the end of the Kickstarter I will have found it!
• The next challenge will be to get the word out to prospective students!
I have many years of experience in getting in touch with the community. I will connect with art educators and community organizations to find children (both paying and scholarship students) who LOVE ART and will benefit from this opportunity. As to contacting adults, I am confident that between local papers and social media I'll be able to connect with aspiring artists. Many have already made inquiries.

• An ongoing challenge will be to to complete the original paintings for the rewards in a timely fashion. And I'm SO EXCITED to have the opportunity to do so! It just takes time, especially because my paintings are very detailed. And patience from the supporters!
