What is Wry Reveries and where did it come from?
What is Wry Reveries and where did it come from?

Wry Reveries is a classically inspired point-and-click adventure game where you’re invited to experience numerous dark tales from the master of macabre himself- Edgar Allan Poe. 

Travel back in time to the Victorian Era with its sophisticated socialites, misguided malpractices, and devastating diseases. All the while exploring a dreamscape full of mysteries, maladies, and of course, murder! 

This project sprung from a childhood passion for graphical adventures and an earnest desire to reconnect us to the literary works of the past. The original draft was modeled after a modest Game Jam game called, “Your Dream! Just do it!” In which you play as Shia Labeouf waking up to take a test for his class. The game will feature 13 of Mr. Poe’s stories or poems retold, reimagined, or as an adaptation. 

The game itself is spread across six chapters, with a prologue and an epilogue. We are currently working on chapter two while refining chapter one and the prologue. We have estimated that each additional chapter could be completed, without assistance, within a three month period. Accounting for extra time for polish or disaster, we have determined that the release date for Wry Reveries will be during October 2019. 

 

 

In terms of chapter-by-chapter, the narrative has not yet been fully fleshed-out. However, what stories will be present in each chapter is already decided with a general idea of key events, how they're triggered and where they lead; as well as the entire narrative from an overview/bulletpoint perspective.  (There is a roadmap of when/where stories take place, how they're accessible, and their impact on the next section of the game) 

For the Demo/Prologue, we intend to make all new animations(and more of them!) as well as adjust the events in the area slightly. We also plan to add more interactivity in the Baltimore home setting.

Our story takes place in Baltimore, MD, USA, during the early 1800s. The protagonist of our story, Edgar Allan Poe, cannot escape the ghosts of his past; and more importantly, he cannot defeat the monster of his present- Writer's Block!

To overcome his present predicament, he seeks the aid of a muse but finds himself a prisoner within his own mind. The same mind that birthed poems such as, “The Raven”, and “Annabel Lee.” 

You must live vicariously through Mr. Poe to navigate his gloomy dreamscape. This will involve solving puzzles, discovering unusual artifacts, and exploring a world full of suspicious and endearing characters.

Players will experience a dreamscape derived specifically from the many universes within Mr. Poe's published works in custom forms. Not every story is mandatory, and events in the game are altered through the player's choices to shape unique individual experiences!

As a point-and-click adventure, the key tools to play Wry Reveries will involve your pointer and intellect. The majority of gameplay involves interacting with the environment and finding objects to use unique and peculiar ways. Fans of this genre will find familiar elements within, along with a few new tweaks.

Interaction System: Commands within the game are condensed to simply interact, rather than fumbling with many action types like see, touch, use, and talk. Actions performed by the player are dependent upon context (i.e. interact with a person is talk, but interacting with a person using an item is give)

Puzzle System: Wry Reveries will feature two primary types of puzzles: isolated puzzles/events that are logic-based and then action-oriented ones.

Progression System: Progression is dependent upon solving puzzles, but they can be done in multiple ways and provide different outcomes or unique follow-up events deeper into the story.

LiveInTheGameLLC was founded by Benjamin Pope in 2015. We’re a small studio built mostly from the alumni of The University of Advancing Technology. We operate remotely from one another and often help students have the opportunity to taste a bit of the indie lifestyle. Our studio works on several, smaller endeavors usually, but we want to try and make Wry Reveries as grand as it can be!

 Most of us have day jobs and work for free, but several of us need to be compensated for their work. We’ve struggled in the past to keep members on the team because of a lack of money, so it has become quite apparent that we need members who’ll stay with the project in order to stay on schedule. Without funding, this project is scheduled for release by October 2019, but with funding, it may be finished by Summer 2018! 

The designer and programmer are not currently being paid, and any funds spent on marketing or physical rewards will be provided outside of your Kickstarter donations. So that breaks down the sections into six categories: artists, animator, voice talents, localization, audio, and Kickstarter fees/taxes. Risks and challenges

Wry Reveries had a pretty rocky start, but we're much more stable than we've ever been and have maintained this momentum for the past few months. For many of us, this is our first major game, and it is exactly because of what we've overcome thus far that we are confident in its completion.

We aren't currently planning to release Wry Reveries physically, and as a company, LITG has already released a game for Steam/iOS/Android. So, we understand what sort of specifications are necessary to release a game on those platforms, as well as what goes into its development.

The structure of the game was very much in disarray until we really landed on our current team members. For a while, Wry Reveries lacked artists, programmers, and especially leaders- we have all these now. That is why we're confident that we will complete and release Wry Reveries, even if we don't reach our Kickstarter goal.

As long as we can retain our current team members, the project will be completed. Additional funding from Kickstarter will help us make the game better, and much faster, too. Since the Kickstarter donations are going to only be used for bringing on an additional artist or hiring an animator, having voice acting, etc. Even without those things, we can still finish making the game with the team we currently have.
