Best Environmental Kids Book of 2019 said Mountain Life Mag.!!
When I found an empty plastic water bottle on a glacier at 2035 meters, I knew something had to change.
As a Adventure Guide in Squamish and Whistler BC, I see first hand that plastic waste has no place in the natural world. As a father of two, I know our children will be the ones who will have to lead change for a cleaner planet. So I decided to write a kids book. They often say, ”Scare yourself, learn something, challenge yourself every day" Well, writing Little Spring just did that, and more!
What happens when one little water bottle realizes the impact it has on the world?
Little Spring (or Petit Ruisseau in the French version that will come after this launch) is an environmental illustrated short story. Readers follow Little Spring as it travels from the bottling plant to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Along the way, it meets animals and humans and shares important issues through humour and education.
Meet the Little Spring Team:
My name is Jean-Francois (JF' to most, and 'PaPa' to two!) and I need your help to support the planet!
Ever since I can remember I have had a passion for the outdoors. As a kid, my fondest memories were sitting on a dock with my fishing rod for hours, or coming back to the house with hives on my belly and arms because I ate some forest plants that I shouldn't have! (I really wanted to be Moogli or Tom Sawyer)
Over the last 20 years exploring and guiding, I have seen the effects of increased back-country traffic and disrespect for mother nature on our oceans. As society becomes more disposable day by day, I know I can't just sit idle and watch things go downhill.
I would love for my kids and other citizens of the world to be able to hike, swim or walk on a glacier without dodging plastic waste. I want plant and animal species to thrive without the dangers of plastic pollution. Little Spring is my local solution to generate awareness and action for this global issue.
Professional Illustration, Vibrant Book Design and Responsible Canadian Printing
Writing the story was a bliss. A bigger challenge was to create images that can lead the imagination of the readers and amplify the action! So I hired my friend Lorne Craig at Unicycle Creative – a lover of the outdoors and amazingly talented illustrator. Lorne has decades of experience in cartooning, creative production and sustainability. Together we have sourced well-established Canadian printing using FSC® Certified, responsibly-sourced paper. Little Spring will be a joy to read for kids of all ages, with artwork on every spread. The pieces are in place. All we need is YOUR backing to make it happen!
How will backing Little Spring reach people and create change?
Little Spring is targeted to children from 6 to 10 years old, but its tale and solutions are for everyone. (I can see parents reflecting on it as they read it to their kids!) I have been in touch with educators and plan to get this book into classrooms where teachers can use it as part of their curriculum. With your help I will print 1000 copies in the first run – I know it's a big number but it’s a big cause!
For the next phase, Petit Ruisseau, the French version, will be up and running at the end of summer 2019. French is the language of my roots, and has a culture with a big environmental audience.
What do I hope readers get from my book?
I am hoping that my readers try to make some changes in their lives for the future. Maybe a bigger lesson is to produce less and make things that will last. It's not just about recycling, it's about managing resources, from products through disposal. If you agree, please consider backing Little Spring. The world could use a new eco hero!

Risks and challenges
I can hang off a rope on the side of a mountain all day but publishing... that's a little scary! I am fortunate to have friends who are book store owners, book writers, teachers, self publishing gurus and even people who help run a library. I took a seminar in Self Publishing and that helped give me confidence and some great direction. I also got great help from my friends at Quest University Canada for editing and proof reading.
And if that's not enough, I have two kids that motivate me and a super wife that supports me through it all. Self publishing is hard, but with a good plan and some help from key people I will make it happen!
