We're in the process of building out, and we need your help to finish the rest! We will offer art classes for adults and children to continue our support of the arts.
Little Paper Planes has been committed to supporting the arts since day one in 2004 when I, Kelly started it online. As an artist I have always wanted to support my fellow artists through the store, publications, the LPP+ Residency, collaborations, interviews, and now through classes! When the shop first opened its physical location I started the residency program which was in the back of the shop. Having an artist always working in the back created an exciting energy within the space. I loved having an active space where ideas and creation happen. We moved the residency out of the shop in 2014 to give the artists more space and opportunity. Its permanent home is at the Minnesota Street Studios. Since then I have been thinking about what the next evolution of LPP store front and how we can move forward in a sustainable way.
Unfortunately retail is hurting right now. On Valencia Street our traffic has slowed down noticeably for most of the retail stores. To be fully transparent I am struggling to keep the doors open. I am at a crossroads and want LPP to grow in a way where we can continue to work and support artists, but also pay our rent and bills. I started thinking about why I had started LPP in the first place all those years ago: my artist community. I want to get back to what inspires me which is a space to enrich us, teach us, inspire us, collaborate, make art, share ideas, and start projects. Through this thought process I started thinking a lot about the future of the arts and the future of my 18 month old son Hunter. I am looking forward to having a place for adults to take classes, but I am really excited about creating a space to teach kids art.
The LPP After School Program will start in January 2018. We will work with children from ages 6-10. Each class will be project based and 4-6 weeks long sessions. The classes will have a foundation in both art history and contemporary art to give them context of the past, the present, and them as the future! More details on the program will be coming in early fall, stay tuned! The LPP art camps will start in the summer of 2018.
The LPP Workshop will offer adult classes every Saturday and Sunday during store hours. We hope these classes will inspire you to go home and expand on your new skills or tighten up the ones you have or start a new business! We are still in the process of creating the 2017 schedule but some of the highlights: ongoing hand building ceramic classes, indigo dying, marbling, weaving, cyanotype, wood spoon carving, hand stamping fabric, embroidery, making a lamp, pickling, flower arranging, pom pom garlands, fermented sauerkraut, homemade pasta, how to photograph your products to grow your brand on Instagram, creating a repeat-patterns, silk painting, silk screening greeting cards, making leather accessories, zine making, jewelry making, and more! We will also be teaming up with local companies like Adobe to offer classes at LPP. In partnership with Adobe we will host beginner classes in Photoshop, Illustrator and other programs! The class schedule will be up the end of July. All classes will include refreshments, snacks and the materials.
In addition to the classes we will hold a weekly drawing club, potlucks, artist talks, creative mom meet-ups, pop-ups, book clubs, and more! For the retail part we will pair things down a little bit and add more office supplies, stationary, and art supplies.
I hope you are as excited about the future changes as we are!!! Please help us keep our doors open and evolve to the next chapter!
Love, Kelly and the LPP Team (Hannah, Dana, Michelle, and Maggie)
Risks and challenges
Since 2004 I have been able to grow a small website of eight artists into a space that has given opportunities to hundreds of artists both nationally and internationally. I want Little Paper Planes to evolve to the next chapter, but I need my community to help me get there. We are in a time where retail is facing some serious hardships and it would be so unfortunate if I had to close LPP down. With your help we will be able to build out the back of the shop so we can offer classes to not only continue our commitment to the arts, but also to provide a new revenue stream for us. For the survival of LPP we need to expand from solely relying on retail sales. I am confident LPP will being able to grow with this expansion!!! All rewards will be shipped out early fall. Thank you so much for your support. Love, KellyLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
