March Update - Vertical Slice Part 2

Dear backers,

We're back with another Kickstarter Update and second in a series about our Vertical Slice progress.

This month, I'm not going to focus on level art, because I want to save that for next month. I think it's important that properly light everything and show off what the final game is going to look like.

Towards the end of last month's update, I said that in March we would show off more progress with the characters. During our internal meetings in February, we thought it would be cool to shift the format of the monthly updates and start doing more video blogs, which can better demonstrate features and gameplay. So bear with us, as our Art Department is still getting the hang of these during our first two attempts. 

We'll start with character customization. For this part, I enlisted the help of Craig, our lead technical character artist. Craig is going to show off the Female Human Archer along with some of the body and hair customization features. We didn't get a change to show multiple head swaps or skin tones, but those are also working.


Next up is a video on the user interface. For this part, I asked Jared, our lead designer to walk through those features. This is still work in progress, but I'm very pleased with the direction.

      To everyone who “lost their money” - you lost it ages ago to Playdek and Little Orbit is gracious enough to give this to you for free. If you don’t like it, don’t accept the key or give it to a friend etc.

      The walls of text gives a bit more context, but videos work well for specific drill downs. Will character customization be once for every class type, per character (those customizations carry across classes), and/or will all there be some randomization in enemy classes?

      It should add some variety to battles, though perhaps at a bit of loss of easy recognizability of class types.

      Lost money is it when you dont recive something.
      If you pre order something it doesnt mean you will neccerly like the finnished product when it ships to you. Also kickstarter isnt a store, its a place people pledgde money in the hope the project they want to come to fruition may see the day of ligth.
      If most backers wanted a purple character a ,nd the project advirtised as such, but because of various circumcices the character is instead blue it doesnt mean i lost my money. It just mean that the project didnt turn out excatly as i wanted.

      Can you give us a rough idea of the finish level of the various tasks you're showing off in your videos? I think this would be beneficial to people who might be unaware of whether it is a finished feature that we are seeing, a first attempt or somewhere in between. In the video you showed, I'd be curious to know how close you feel you are to a finished 'move' animation and the 'splash damage' animation that we saw at the end of the video. Thanks!

      I’ve been here since the start, just because I’ve been the silent the last few updates doesn’t change anything. Why don’t you go back and read my posts and see that I haven’t changed my opinion.

      They didn’t want to go with the original art because they thought they were infringing but they simply don’t have the talent.

      You can go back to do the research, I can’t be bothered arguing with people who think I haven’t been around reading and commenting.

      This is essentially lost money to me.

      I Dont get the people complaining that much about the art, Its not the old team anymore. It was playdeck that sold os FFT appearence not Little orbit. It was pretty suprising we get a game at all considering how much mess Playdeck caused. Also, i dont think the art looks too much like league of legends or mobile games. The character in the video actually reminded me of Frozen so perhaps some of the character art is more like disney appearance rather than lol or dota. Thats my personal opinion though-

      You must have never paid attention to the project since Little Orbit obtained it. I backed the project because of the names and artists attached to it as well, but I've also paid mind to the struggles they've had in living up to the game's initial premise. They got the writer and music taken care of, but if you actually bothered to pay attention to things...?

      The artist won't be coming back. Playdek not only failed on the game, but they ripped off Akihiko Yoshida and scammed him out of work. Of the major names tied to the game, he was burned the worst. Little Orbit attempted to work with him and get him back in, but he wanted nothing to do with the game after what happened. If Little Orbit tried to copy his style, there would be legal issues that'd rise up because of it.

      It sucks that the game won't have the distinctive Tactics/Tactics Ogre appearance to it, but there's only so much that can be done. The aesthetics can be a little hit or miss for me, I'll admit, but I'm willing to let the gameplay speak for itself.

      Oh, and the UI looks pretty good. BUT, even better with a CT gauge plugged in to the bottom. ;)

      You guys not going to implement the CT gauge?
      I'm not a huge fan of the instant cast spells, I much prefer the targetted/fixed cast depending on the caster or ability being used.

      The instant cast spells makes it feel too similar to disgaea, which is okay from its won perspective. In this game, i was hoping for a battle system more reminiscent to FFT where spells often had stronger/larger AoE but with the fallback of being slower.

      That aspect of the game in FFT was what made some of the tactical aspects so great. Even the AI was smart enough to either try to hug your team members when an AoE damaging spell was being cast on them, or hugging one of your team members being targetted by an AoE heal effect.

      Units that were casting also had decreased evasion and often took extra damage which was also a great mechanic, allowing for easier stealing or cancelling their cast by silencing them mid-cast.

      I do like the map designs that were posted earlier; those were really great and kudos to the design team on making them look the way they are.

      Still can't really get into the character designs, I really liked the sleepy-eyed design that FFT originally had for all of it's characters. The current head designs feel like a mesh between a league of legends and overwatch character.

      I do like the motion animation of the units though, the team that does that did a very good job on it in my opinion.

      I dont mind either way, Both text and video works for me.
      Allthough with that said something works better on video rather to explain it by text.
      So perhaps make videos of the subjects that works best with videos and text for rest?

      Eh, videos are overrated. I'd prefer to read stuff, because I can do that without the aid of headphones/contributing to the noise pollution around me.

      When it comes to updates, I much prefer reading text and looking at images to watching a video. I usually read updates on the subway where I have no internet access, or in other places where watching a video is inconvenient. Thanks!

      Oops, spells aren't supposed to miss. We're still working on that. lol

      I don't care about the level of character customization either and seems like a waste of resources. Who cares if you can't make your character fat, it's a game. Also not a fan of the WOW, LOL or Dota look but that is minor if the game play holds up. Backers were hoping for more of the European inspired Japanese anime costume design.

      Hopefully the customization in character classes, abilities, and equipment shines and does games in the same genre justice.

      I don’t entirely agree with you, for some of us this isn’t what we backed for and aesthetics can be important as that’s part of the what may have attracted people to back for this project.

      I don’t like it myself and prefer a refund or just for the abomination to die in an ugly fire myself but I’ve stopped caring for this project. If this was the art that was presented to us during the kickstarting process I would have never put a single cent into this.

      It’s ugly, that’s all I have to say.

      On the one hand, the visuals look very good and it's nice to see things coming together, thank you. As an animator, I can say that the motion looks good, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else is in store.

      On the other hand, this isn't at all what I was hoping for from the gamedev priorities, and character visual customization isn't even remotely interesting. I was hoping for a leaner, cleaner game that was all about the gameplay and any "customization" was about mechanics, tactical/strategic considerations, and each unit's build/loadout. That's what made FFT work for me, after all, and being able to tweak the visuals in that game wouldn't have added anything to the experience *for me*.

      On the other other hand, perhaps the "fluff" that I find actively disengaging will make the game work for a wider audience beyond merely backers, making the game possibly better in the long run and keeping the company afloat.

      ...so yes, I have reservations, and it's not what I'd have done with the project at all, but here's hoping for success, and I'm looking forward to playing it and telling my friends about it. It's always good to see more solid tactical games.

      @Steve I've noticed for the past 3 updates, at least, all you can do is insult the art aesthetic and ask for a refund. The UI and environmental elements look far better than any standard cellphone game. While the character art is more reminiscent of League of Legends or DotA, (neither of which are cellphone games) It seems to me like they are doing good work and we should all just be patient and see how this pans out. However, does seem to me that you have your heart set on hating the game no matter what. So maybe, please, just do so quietly and IF we are all disappointed in the end you can be smug in the knowledge that you were right all along. And who knows, maybe if you withhold judgement for a year or so, they may surprise you.

      On the one hand this is far, oh so far from the game i backed. On the other It looks good in it's own right and without you guys i'd be getting nothing at all.

      So yeah, keep doing what you do best and i'll enjoy what you give us for it's own merits :)

      I really really dislike these animated portraits. Especially with bad animation cycling. But I guess this is what I should've expected with you guys taking even more inspirations from Blizzard MOBA games than the inspirations from the game we asked you to make.

      I like the text followed by images/videos. Though the formatting could be better or spaced out a bit and not so close together.

      I do prefer text too because I usually have time to read stuff like that at work and can't afford to put sound when other people are working around.

      The text/image article format actually works better for me, because I usually get these updates via email while I'm at my office desk (where a video with sound would be a bit much). Still, I see that other people really enjoy the videos, too, which can better exhibit the game in motion.

      Any possibility of offering both update formats?

      Those particle/3d graphical effects on the Automatank at the end are some of the best I've seen for this game.

      I admit I like the "wall of text" since my computer is used for the office music at work, but I just watched them without sound and it's great to see how far things have come since this KS began.
