October brings backer exclusive content

Dear backers,

I can't believe we're two months in!

Hopefully you guys are enjoying the monthly rhythm of these updates. From the start, we realized that if we were going to take Unsung Story over, it would be critical to establish a reliable level of communication.

Here are the general updates for the month of September:

This month I thought we would try something a little different. Honestly, this is our first time running a Kickstarter, so I have no idea how well this will work, but in reviewing the Unsung Story campaign it was pointed out to me that you guys have gotten very little in the way of exclusive content. Everything has been publicly posted.

Where is the fun in that? You paid good money to be a part of something special. So here is what we're going to try:

  • This is the first update. It walks through general news and our communication channels, which will be more and more important in the coming months.
  • The second update will discuss changes to rewards and add-ons, and it will be another public update.
  • The third update will be focused on some initial design decisions. This update will initially be posted to Design Consultants and Collector backers and above. Don't worry, we will be sharing these details will everyone a couple days later.
  • The last update will be focused on some initial art decisions. This update will be initially posted to Art Consultants and Collector backers and above. Again, we will be sharing these details with everyone else soon.

As we move forward, we hope to start providing exclusive access to Unsung Story updates for all the backers. For this month, we just wanted to do something fun for the many backers who spent more than $150 each and have never gotten any special perks.

As some of you may recall, we announced in September that a technical problem was preventing us from getting admin rights to Facebook for the Unsung Story page, but we're finally in! The page has been cleaned up for a fresh start. We were surprised how many backers didn't yet know we had taken over the project.

Going forward we will be updating Facebook with relevant links and new content, so if you haven't already, please take a moment to go Like our page:

We're also on Twitter. This is a great, bite-sized way for us to categorize new information with hashtags and retweet updates from the community. We also have some upcoming plans for using Twitter differently than Facebook, so make sure to follow us there as well.

Lastly, we didn't get a lot of say in the timing of taking over Unsung Story. We were in the middle of overhauling our own site, but once the deal was signed, we were asked to notify you guys immediately.

The new version of the site is finally up, and we've added backer-level specific forums! Feel free to go check it out:

Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Sincerely, Matthew Scott

      Level 99 on

I would like to start of by saying, like many of my fellow backers, that we appreciate this routine cycle of updates here. Even if you all just update saying "yes, we are still working on it and I had an egg sandwich for breakfast today", that's enough to placate the fears of running out on and abandoning the project.

It is great news that you're reviving the various modes of social media interaction. I know that you mentioned Facebook, Twitter, and your website, which is awesome. There used to be (not sure if they even exist anymore) forums under Playdek's site for Unsung Story, as well as an Unsung Story reddit. While having forums so far ahead of release might be overkill, as it would be an influx of people with not a lot to talk about yet, have you thought about either the forums situation or the reddit?

As for backer-exclusive content, that's totally at your discretion. Just be sure to keep the public updated on the big things to ensure everyone knows that things are going on, even if those things are only potentially revealed to backers.

Keep up the great work and I hope you all had a fantastic end of Summer.

Just checking, have the design updates gone out yet? I just want to be sure that I don't miss them.

Without question I love the emails even if just to say we have not forgotten the backers.

Personally, I don't care about "exclusive" updates, content, or whatever. But I appreciate the sentiment.

Way more communication than the past team ever gave.

Signs of good things to come. Still skeptical but good signs.

Nice work guys, liking that you are staying in communication with us.

I'd like to add my voice to the list who Do want to be spoiled on story as well as gameplay. It's the story that carries me along in these games

Has anyone actually ASKED for exclusive update content? I would think that transparency would be a much better look for the project at this point.

I doubt anyone particularly cares about add-ons and reward adjustments either. Again, has anyone asked for this?

Just show us what progress is being made on the game.

And thank you for so far sticking to a monthly update schedule. Even if progress is slow, it IS important to let us know the project is still breathing. See you November 1st.

Honestly I just love that you guys are posting updates and stuff. It goes a long way.

From one developer to another, good luck. I backed this and pretty much gave it up for dead ages ago. Without some of the previously attached names, I admittedly have a lot less faith in it delivering what I backed for but I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for stepping up the communications since taking over.

You've got a Hell of a job ahead of you. Hang in there. =)

" was pointed out to me that you guys have gotten very little in the way of exclusive content. Everything has been publicly posted. Where is the fun in that?"

Having everything public reduces confusion for the public. This is a lesson that Double Fine learned well from their DFA! campaign, where their backers were kept well-informed about the status of the project and the company, but the public was left to extrapolate and speculate on small, paraphrased tidbits, which often lead to misleading or outright incorrect news reporting.

While Unsung Story and Little Orbit don't have the notoriety and coverage that DFA! and DF had, you're not flying under the radar--Kotaku has had periodic coverage of this campaign--so it may be preferable or ideal to keep updates public to avoid misreporting.

That said, I would think the updates for the consultant reward tiers wouldn't pose a problem, as they're intended specifically for those backers, and you said they'd be made public later on.

      @T.J. Brumfield

I, for one, want to be spoiled on story. Plenty of other tactical RPGs have had decent to great tactical gameplay since FFT (I just finished Children of Zodiarcs which accomplishes this pretty well)...I'm looking for gameplay tied with a fantastic story, of which there are very few in this genre.

    13. Charlie Shannon on

Tj play divinity original sin 2! Best tactical rpg you'll have played in year. It is more rpg skewed then tactical (if you're expecting heavy rosters a la FFT or fire emblem look elsewhere) but it's an incredible rpg with great tactical gameplay.

    14. T.J. Brumfield on

      Can I make a request?

There have been plenty of tactical RPGs since Final Fantasy Tactics, but many are seen as a disappointment. FFT worked on two levels, gameplay and story.

I don't think we want to be spoiled on story, but you want to make sure the gameplay is balanced and well refined. If you're trying to establish strong community support as a new developer after the initial mess of the Kickstarter, I recommend you establish some forums or a community website where the community can discuss some of the combat/tactical design in a fairly transparent manner.

Let us test out concepts with tabletop/miniature rules that will form the basis of what you're doing in the game.

First I just wanna say loving the communication you guys have done since taking over. Night and day compared to how bad it was before I had just about lost hope in this project. I also had a question what's the chances we see this game on the Nintendo switch? Since getting one I find I wanna play literally everything on it.
