About

THE CURSE OF THE SPONGEMAN is a movie I've dreamt of making since I was a child. I grew up in Key West, FL and as a young boy, I was obsessed with the old Spongeman statue in the center of town (seen in the middle image):

The original Spongeman figure was created by an artist in the 1920s as a monument to the sponge fishermen of Key West. The idea of this magical creature captured my imagination and somehow remained in my thoughts throughout my life.

Fast forward 30 some years to the present… I am now a filmmaker and have the incredible opportunity to bring him to life and share this magical story with people around the world!

Last year, my crew and I shot an 8 minute film that can be seen above. I was thrilled to see this short ignite the same excitement for Spongeman in viewers today that I felt all those years ago as a child sneaking half-nervous, captivated glances of his statue. Now I want to expand this project into a feature length film (70-90 minutes) that we can share with kids and kids at heart for generations to come.

We want to make a film that is both true to the spirit of the creature feature films of the 1950s and consciously adapted to our present day, creating a modern fairy tale of sorts.

The Curse of the Spongeman is a full length film about a creature named Spongeman. During the hurricanes of the 1920s, the wind and currents stirred up local spongebeds and formed an elusive being that has been mysteriously living in the waters off the Florida Keys ever since. It is a modern day fairy tale inspired by classic 1950s horror films.

Spongeman lives an isolated existence in an abandoned Civil War fort in the middle of the ocean (Ft. Jefferson of the Dry Tortugas). Seen below:

Lois Adams has recently split with her husband and resolves to sail around the Florida Keys in pursuit of adventure and independence after refusing to continue in a monotonous, unfulfilling life. One night, she runs aground in a storm and wakes up on the beach surrounding the Fort Jefferson. She sees a shadowy figure in the distance and decides to investigate.

Upon entering the Fort, she finds a dilapidated space filled with elaborate drawings of sea life hung on the walls. She sees Spongeman and immediately falls in love with the idea of this strangely beautiful, sensitive living enigma.

News travels fast in the Florida Keys and before long everyone in the town knows there has been a sighting of this legendary, mythical character.

Soon, an opportunistic marine biologist is out to capture and study Spongeman’s body for science, thinking it will make him famous. A grumpy old fisherman is aims to capture and cage him, hoping it will bring money to his family. And a young, compassionate deep-sea Navy diver is on the trail to protect this majestic creature.

All of these stories collide as the frantic search for Spongeman escalates.

The Florida Keys is a uniquely diverse ecosystem that provides endless natural wonders to all who are lucky enough to live here or visit. Growing up in these magnificent surroundings has definitely given me a deep appreciation for thoughtful ecological usage and conservation. I would love for this film to gently reflect those values while sharing this gorgeous environment with viewers everywhere, encouraging them to seek out and appreciate our unique world responsibly.

I also believe it is crucial to promote equal representation of dynamic characters of all genders in film. So I’m looking forward to showcasing a strong, female character in this lead role. Julie Adams, especially her character in Creature from the Black Lagoon, is a big inspiration to me in terms of tone and style. The 1950s saw a rise in independent women in cinema, and although we have come a long way since then, there is still farther to go. So I’m really looking forward to updating Adams’ empowered vibe to a present day film while still keeping a similar aesthetic.

"Herschell Gordon Lewis is the man who put red meat into the American cinematic diet. Ultimately Herschell made Quentin Tarantino possible." - Joe Briggs

Risks and challenges

As with most small independent films, we have a very limited budget. Our amazing crew will be putting in long hours, working at a feverish pace, and providing their much-appreciated services either for free or for very little money. All of this, coupled with our timeline, means there won’t be any room for mistakes. We will be a team of highly dedicated people who believe in Spongeman and want to make a modern creature fairy tale that will stand the test of time!
