Littlecodr: The Card Game that Introduces Kids to Code

What?

Littlecodr is an insanely fun card game that introduces kids ages 4-8 or more to the fundamentals of coding.

Why?

Code is everywhere. From our devices to our car keys, we come in contact with things that are controlled by code hundreds of times each day. As parents, we wanted to expose our kids to the thinking behind code so that they can better understand how things work and be better equipped to make their own things one day.

"Some forecasters are calling coding the new literacy because of what kids learn in the process. Coding helps kids develop essential skills such as problem solving and critical thinking. Plus, it encourages them to become creators, not just consumers, of the technology they use."
Ingrid Simone

How it Works

The Basics

To play Littlecodr, kids use Action Cards (Step Forward, Turn Left, etc.) to create a set of instructions, or code, to tell you or their friends where to go and how to get there. They will often need to navigate around obstacles, such as furniture, and make adjustments to their code (debug) when things go wrong.

Mission Cards
We provide four different levels of Mission Cards that kids can work through as they become more comfortable with the Action Cards. Missions start out very simple (get your parent from point A to point B) and get progressively more challenging and fun!

Lab Cards
Once you have completed the Mission Cards, Lab Cards allow kids to expand on what they have learned by adding new variations and wrinkles to the missions. They will quickly learn how changing just one Action Card can have a major impact on their code!

Learning Objectives

Littlecodr introduces kids to key concepts related to:
<coding & logic/>
<planning & linear thinking/>
<prototyping/>
<problem solving/>

They will also get to practice:
<counting/>
<reading/>
<following instructions/>
<lefts & rights/>

What People are Saying About Littlecodr

“University students in computer science and engineering are taught the basics of coding: logic, decision making and clear thinking. To be able to do this at an early age, without worrying about the details of language syntax is a clear plus. So extending the age range from 4 on up to old age is excellent.”
-Prof. Gerald Ratzer, Professor Emiritus and founding member of the School of Computer Science at McGill University

“Very cool intersection between computer time and active play time.”
- Jennifer Hood, Founder, Jump Gymnastics

“Dad, can we play Littlecodr again?!?”
- Nathan's kids, Game Experts

In the Media

A Note to our American Friends!

Like Seth Rogen, Flickr and rock band Trooper, Littlecodr was created in Vancouver, BC. That means (1) it's awesome! And (2) Kickstarter insists we collect money in Canadian dollars. Traditionally when a campaign is priced in a foreign currency, the data says you guys are less likely to back it. Being the amazing early adopters that you are, we are asking that you help us buck this trend. So, when you see rewards priced in "CAD" remember that 1 US Dollar is worth something like 200 Canadian Dollars* and take advantage of this great exchange rate to help us bring this game to life!

*The actual exchange rate is about 1 USD = 1.24 CAD

Production Updates

We are not waiting for our campaign to end to keep the production process going. We want to have this game in your hands as soon as we can and we will use this section to keep you up-to-date on the latest production news.

Here is the first glimpse of our game box prototypes, hot off the press!

Our Story

"Hey Alex, what did you do to teach your kids about coding?" That was the question that Littlecodr co-creator Nathan Slee posed to his friend and colleague Alexandra Greenhill during a casual conversation in the hallway in between sessions at last year's GROW Conference in Whistler, BC. When Alex told Nathan about the homemade game that she had created with her kids, his immediate reaction was "We have to make that!"

That night, Nathan created a website to explain the concept and by the end of the next day, they had received over 20 pre-orders. By day two, they had received pre-orders from six different countries and it became clear it was more than just Nathan who thought this game had to be made.

As the game was looking more and more like it would become a reality, Will Lawrence joined the team. Will is a former trustee for a Toronto school board who is passionate about getting more coding education into today's schools.

Together, the Littlecodr Team has spent months designing, testing and fine-tuning the game with lots of help and advice from educators, game creators and just about anyone we could speak to. We now have a game that we are really excited to share with the world and we are grateful to you for helping to make this happen!

Thank you so much for your support!

Risks and challenges

The complicated part about a game like this is not the manufacturing itself, but creating a high quality game at a price that is affordable.

In order to make sure that this game is a success, we have partnered with Panda Games (http://pandagm.com) who specialize in game manufacturing and have been involved in dozens of Kickstarter campaigns. They understand the printing, shipping, importing and order fulfilment aspects of this project in ways that we never could. With their help, we plan to get this game to you on time and at a level of quality that you will LOVE.
