Three years ago, Lynn Downey Braswell’s husband gave her a book that he thought she would like: Shauna Niequist’s Cold Tangerines. Lynn didn’t like it. She loved it. So much, in fact, that she dreamed of turning Shauna’s powerful essays into a play. But she kept that dream to herself because, like Shauna puts it the chapter Visions and Secrets, “Everyone has dreams that they think about on bad days at work. But they’re dreams, right? You don’t actually do them, right?”

But then Lynn got mono and she figured that, if she was going to die anyway, it couldn’t hurt to reach out to Shauna and confess what she had been dreaming. Unable to deny the “dying wish” of an adorable newlywed, Shauna gave her enthusiastic okay and Cold Tangerines: The Play took it’s first step from dream to reality.

After three years of writing and re-writing, script readings with friends over afternoon coffee...and some over wine, Cold Tangerines: The Play has transformed from a collection of monologues celebrating the beauty in the everyday to the empowering story of a woman healing the broken pieces of herself by having the courage to tell her stories.

We now need YOU to help us take this next, monumental step in bringing Cold Tangerines from the page to the stage.

We have an incredible cast and are busily planning for the world premiere of Cold Tangerines: The Play at the Fremont Centre Theatre at the end of May. We can’t wait to share the message of YOU ARE ENOUGH with our audiences.

With your help, we need this kickstarter campaign to raise a minimum of $4,200 to get Cold Tangerines: The Play off the ground.  That amount will cover the cost of the first two weekends at the theatre, production insurance, and a publicist.  Any additional money we raise will go towards theatre rental for the final three weekends, and other production expenses like programs, postcards, sets, costumes, and believe it or not, paying our actors!  Together WE ARE ENOUGH to bring this beautiful message to life!

Please give what you can, share this page, and check back for updates about our progress and video introductions from our entire team!

Risks and challenges

Producing a play is like putting together a puzzle with a million tiny pieces. It is filled with challenges ranging from selecting the right material, to assembling a great team, finding a venue, prioritizing the countless tasks so your energy is focused on the most urgent without ever losing sight of the big picture and what's next up in your queue, to finding your audience and creating something that leaves a lasting impression on them.

We are confident that on this, our third production, we are ready to tackle all of these challenges head-on. We have an incredible team who you will meet through video introductions over the course of this campaign and are excited to be returning to the Fremont Centre Theatre, the same venue where we mounted another successful (both creatively AND financially) world premiere last spring. In addition to being a beautiful theatre, the Fremont Centre Theatre offers us the advantage of working with a venue whose owners are not just interested in renting their space, but in connecting with companies they believe in and coming alongside them as they grow. This heart for mentoring is one of the unique ways we feel equipped to succeed with this project.

Of course, the biggest challenge with a new play is always GETTING THE WORD OUT…and that is somewhere that YOUR support can be tremendously valuable to us again!
