 //UPDATE (7 DEC): NEW STRETCH GOALS ADDED//

Little Book for Big Changes has over 100 activities and ideas to help kidsmake the world a better place. Ideal for 7 to 10-year-olds and their families, it is a fun, educational, and engaging way to bring people together to change the world!

Inspired by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, Little Book for Big Changes helps kids develop into responsible global citizens. We believe our world could benefit from more global citizens - people who are aware of how the world works and have a sense of empathy and responsibility to make it a fairer and more sustainable place.

Global challenges like poverty, inequality, and climate change can be complex and abstract for adults, let alone kids! That is why Little Book for Big Changes builds concrete examples and hands-on experiences as a first step for kids to gain understanding around these topics.

Little Book for Big Changes has 12 chapters, each centered on a different global challenge. It is designed to inform, empower, and motivate kids to take actions on these big challenges facing today’s world.

Our approach is guided by Oxfam’s Learn – Think – Act global citizenship education framework. Each of our chapters provides readers with information to develop a basic understanding of these big challenges, activities to explore and reflect on their roles as global citizens, and finally additional ideas and resources to empower them to engage with these issues further.

We have collected a wide variety of fun and engaging activities, including:

  • Classic word puzzles
  • Arts and crafts
  • Science explorations
  • Interactive projects

Our book is designed to be educational and fun for kids around ages 7-10 and their grown-ups (though kids of any age will enjoy!). Our activities involve varying degrees of adult guidance and supervision. This is done intentionally! We want grown-ups to be involved and help kids connect concepts to the real world. Our book includes a Guide for Grown-Ups, which has more information and resources adults can use to support kids as they learn, explore, and engage with these topics.

Most activities make use of everyday objects and take on average less than half an hour to complete.

There is no time like the present, especially as we face political, environmental, and social instability across the globe. To effect positive and lasting change, the power lies with today’s youth – tomorrow’s leaders. We believe it is important for kids to develop understanding, empathy, and a sense of responsibility early in their lives, so they can take actions to create the world they want to live in.

First time backing a project on Kickstarter?

No worries, it is really quite simple! After you select the reward level you would like or an amount you decide to pledge that is not tied to a reward, you’ll be asked to provide your payment details. Only once we reach our funding goal, will your payment be processed. We will then work hard to complete and deliver the books to you. In the unfortunate case that we do not reach our funding goal, you will not be charged at all. Learn more about the process here.

We have been inspired to add on Stretch Goals that will help share our book with even more people. Let’s see how far we can go!

The money raised from this Kickstarter campaign will enable us to finish and deliver this beautifully illustrated soft cover book to kids around the world. The initial funding goal of £6,000 (US$8,000) will help to fund:

We have come up with awesome concepts, activities and ideas to be included in the book. Before we send the book to print, we plan to invite subject matter experts to review each chapter's content, to ensure fairness and accuracy. We also are considering only eco-friendly printers to produce our book.

“It is so important for children to understand that there are things they can do to make the world a better place. This is a great way to get children engaged in these important topics from a young age”
     - Tamsyn B, Co-founder of RefuAid and Mother of two (ages 7 and 4)

Little Book for Big Changes brings real world challenges to children. Don’t let the cute illustrations fool you - this book entertains and challenges children at all levels to learn about and interact with important issues. The result is that children begin to learn about the world around them in a way that is fun and informative.”
     - Manny Barbara, Interim CEO and VP of Advocacy & Thought Leadership, Silicon Valley Education Foundation

"All children must know that ‘you’re never too young to help.’ We should encourage children to know that every little bit of positive action they take will help us towards the bigger end goal if we all work together across the globe."
     - Michele Lai, Founder of Kids4Kids

Hello! We are Karen Ng and Kirsten Liepmann, the co-creators of Little Book for Big Changes. We are two friends trying to do our part to support positive change in the world. We met at business school, where we connected over a shared passion for social impact and a desire to help others achieve impact as well.

Karen comes from the world of social impact investing, helping people and organizations to invest in a way that makes the world a more inclusive and sustainable place. Kirsten’s experience is in education: previously an elementary school teacher, she now works on strategy in an education nonprofit. We hope to help bring people together by starting from the beginning: developing a shared sense of responsibility and values among today’s kids.

We have invited Simona Karaivanova, a talented illustrator, to bring our book to life.

We are grateful for those who have participated in the production of the video, which is filmed by Louis Huynh and edited by Faith Teo, with music from Bensound.

Risks and challenges

This is a low risk project. While we do not have a fully finished product right now, we have worked hard to structure the book's content. We have been working closely with our illustrator, and she has never missed a single deadline. We will invite subject matter experts to review the content to make sure that the information and activities are as accurate and engaging as possible.

We will do everything we can to meet the timeline. In case of any problems and delays, we will make sure to inform you as soon as they arise.
