The Purrfect Sift is the first and only open, automatic, self-cleaning, sifting litter box. It is a truly brilliant design, and it works!
- Open design
- Sealed waste receptacle
- Use any inexpensive clumping litter
- It really works
- Cats will use it (and love it)
Felines have a well-earned reputation as immaculate creatures. Imagine how happy your cat would be if every time he/she had to use the litter box it was clean.
Three years ago I discovered a brilliant idea for an automatic litter box on Youtube.
Invented and patented in 2010, the "Litter Loo" is a simple and elegant solution to an age old problem. It uses gravity to separate the clumps and waste from the clean litter, dumps the waste into a drawer, and returns the clean litter to the litter box. It works with any type of clumping litter. If you have ever scooped a litter box you will immediately understand how it works and why it works. When I saw that video I was ready to buy one on the spot. I would have happily paid $500 to get a Litter Loo. People often spend $1000-2000+ for a washer/dryer that they will use once or twice a week. Wouldn't it be worth spending $500 to solve a problem both you and your cat deal with multiple times per day? It's a real bargain. I thought that there must be thousands of people like me who would want one.
The video below demonstrates how it works.
I think this is the closest thing to "indoor plumbing" for cats (that does not require actual plumbing or training your cat to use a toilet). The secret to the Purrfect Sift is that when a cat urinates the pee never reaches the sides or the bottom of the litter box. So when the machine cycles to sift the litter, the clumps simply tumble down the chute and nothing sticks. Your cat(s) will love it because it cleans itself a few minutes after each time they use it. Kind of like how humans flush the toilet after they use it. Your cat(s) will never again have to step into a dirty litter box. You will love it because all you have to do is empty the drawer every few days and add some fresh litter. No more cleaning the litter box. There will be almost no odor because the Purrfect Sift cleans itself within minutes after your cat uses it, and the waste is stored in a sealed drawer. My cats like to use the litter box in the middle of the night. Shortly after they use it, all the smelly stuff is in the drawer and the sand box is clean again. Can you imagine never having to scoop a litter box again?! And you don't have to order any special supplies for the Purrfect Sift. Any brand of clumping litter and standard plastic bags for the drawer is all you will need.
Here is what Lincoln thinks:
Some people have commented that the litter box is too high for their cat to be able to enter the Purrfect SIft. Any healthy cat will have no difficulty at all. To enter the litter area a cat must be able to jump only 13". Most cats can jump up onto a 36" high countertop without any problem.
In the future we will also be offering an optional step or a ramp that will attach to the base of the Purrfect Sift so that kittens and older cats will be able to enter and exit the litter box without having to jump. You could easily construct one yourself. Here are a couple of ideas.....
We will be offering a Wi-Fi attachment for the Purrfect Sift along with a free smartphone app. It will enable you to check the status of your Purrfect Sift from anywhere. Details have not yet been worked out. It will not be available with initial shipments, but every Purrfect Sift will be able to accept the attachment at a later time.
This Kickstarter campaign is my plan to raise money for this venture and to find out if other cat owners are as excited about the Purrfect Sift as I am. This product is far superior to anything that is on the market. It will be the "iphone" or "Rolls Royce" of automatic litter boxes. The only comparable product that is available today is the Litter Robot™. The Purrfect Sift has many significant advantages over the Litter Robot.
- Many cat owners have problems getting their cat(s) to use a Litter Robot™. The Purrfect Sift was invented to solve this exact problem.
- It Purrfect Sift holds about 5 times more litter
- It's cleaner because clumps never touch the litter pan. It stays cleaner longer, and it's much easier to clean.
- Its significantly quieter
- It contains an expansion port for a future Wi-fi module so you can monitor the Purrfect Sift when you are away.
I plan to sell it directly to the public via my website, Amazon, EBay, and perhaps other web marketplaces
A full cycle video:
The Purrfect Sift is 15" wide, 22" deep, and 29" high. The edge of the litter box area is 13" above the ground. This is very manageable for a cat since most cats can jump on top of 36" high countertops; but for older cats we will be offering an optional step/ramp.
You can use any brand of clumping litter in the Purrfect Sift. You should fill it until the litter is approximately 1/2" below the drip cap (about 30 lbs)..
The Purrfect Sift has 5 timer settings (3,5,7,10 and 15 minutes) for how long it will wait after your cat leaves before it begins to move. Different litters take longer for the clumps to solidify. Also, it gives your cat time to leave the area before it starts.
The Purrfect Sift has three buttons and four lights.
- The first (blue) light flashes when the timer has started.
- The second (green) light on means that the unit is locked and button presses (except Unlock) will be ignored.
- The third (yellow) light flashing means the waste drawer is getting full.
- The fourth (red) light on means it is in "automatic mode".
- The "Cycle/Cancel" button works as follows:
The Cycle/Cancel button
To start a cycle, press the Cycle/Cancel button when the unit is idle.To cancel the timer (which you may want to do after emptying the waste drawer or adding more litter), press the Cycle/Cancel button while the timer is running (the status light will be pulsing when the timer is running). To cancel a cycle in‐progress, press the Cycle/Cancel button while the unit is cycling. If the unit is in the first phase of cycling, then it will consider the litter not level and immediately start leveling the litter followed by returning to the home position. If the litter is already level when the Cycle/Cancel button is pressed, then the unit will simply return to the home position. To force the unit to stop moving, press AND HOLD the Cycle/Cancel button. If the unit is idle and you want to re‐level the litter (which you may want to do after adding more litter), tap the Cycle/Cancel button twice. This will skip the first phase of the cycle, immediately re‐level the litter, then return to the home position.
The "Empty" button.
When you press the button a cycle will begin. It will run until all the clean litter is in the sifting tower and the litterbox has been emptied. Then it will stop. At this point you remove the screen and replace it with the "emptying screen" with a garbage bag attached. Then you press the button again and the cycle continues until all the litter has been emptied into the garbage bag.
The Automatic/Prog button.
Pressing the "Automatic/Prog" button will toggle the Purrfect Sift from Manual mode to Automatic mode. In Automatic mode the red light will go on to indicate "automatic mode". In Manual mode, the Purrfect Sift will not cycle until you press the "Cycle" button. When you are first training your cat to use the machine we recommend that you leave it in Manual mode for about a week. When you see that it needs cleaning you simply push the "Cycle/Cancel" button to begin a cycle. In Automatic mode the machine will sense when your cat has used it and it will cycle either 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 7 minutes, 10 minutes, or 15 minutes later depending on how you have set the timer. The default setting is 7 minutes.
The Purrfect Sift has 5 sensitivity settings for how it determines that a cat is in it. It can be set to higher sensitivity for smaller cats. It also has five settings for leveling the litter at the end of the cycle so that you can adjust it to the litter that you are using.
If you think this is a good idea please help out by sending a link to this project to anyone you know who has a cat or cats. Share this on Facebook, and visit our Facebook page. The ASPCA estimates that there are between 74 million and 96 million cats in the USA. They estimate that between 30 and 37 percent of American homes have a cat for a pet. If we can get enough cat owners to view this product I'm confident we will reach our goal and then some. We are doing this to free all cat owners (cat lovers) from the dreaded task of cleaning the litter box, by far the biggest negative that comes with adopting and living with a cat. We also doing this for the cats who will use it every day and will never again have to jump into a dirty litter box. I am committed to manufacturing this automatic litter box that works so well and that cats will actually use. Please help us make this product a reality by clicking on the 'Back This Project' button."
Risks and challenges
The challenge is to raise enough money to prove that this is a commercially viable product and to begin mass production.
I need your help. In order for the Purrfect Sift to become a reality we must pre-sell at least 1200 Purrfect Sifts at a 35% discount on Kickstarter. Our projected retail price for the Purrfect Sift is $499 with free shipping (a $40.00 value).
Getting a 35% discount means that you can pre-order one for $325.00 with free shipping.
Why must I get at least 1200 pre-orders?
Here is the math:
The molds for the plastic injection molding are going to cost about $300,000.
The unit cost for each of those 1200 pieces will be about $125.00. 1200 x 125 = $150,000.
To ship 1200 pieces in containers from the far east to the U.S. will cost $30,000.
To then ship those 1200 pieces to customers in the U.S. will cost $48,000.
So it will cost at least $528,000 to deliver those 1200 pieces. I don’t have $528,000,
If we are successful on Kickstarter and pre-sell 1200 pieces at $325 each, we will net approximately $355,000.
I am ready and willing to put up the difference ($175,000) in addition to the $150,000 I have already invested to start a new business and bring this product to market.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
