Storm Journey - Story Card Deck
We belong in a story of hope.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Thu, November 21 2019 12:00 AM UTC +00:00.
It's a Stormy Time
I'm an artist and a spiritual companion who's passionate about sharing beautiful creative tools for growth and healing. Will you please consider joining this crowd-funding campaign to help me print and share Storm Journey Story Cards?
The storms of our lives are all around us, literally and metaphorically. We experience so many shifts and transformations of all kinds-- breakups, diagnoses, promotions, windfalls, political conflicts, protest movements, climate changes.
Yet more often than not, it's hard talk to our dear ones, our communities, or even ourselves about these profound losses and changes. We need creative ways to start real conversations about the tougher stuff. We need tools to help us recognize and honor our fears, feelings, and possibilities. And we especially need to remember that we all belong in a meaningful story of hope.
The Storm Journey came to me as a dream/vision about surrender and transformation. Now the story is for you, in a set of art and questions offering a new perspective on our challenges.
What are Storm Journey Story Card Decks?
Storm Journey is part vision, part spiritual practice, part children's book. It's a profound and moving story told one image and one word at a time. It's made of a series of 26 art illustrations with single words that move through tragedy, failure, and surrender into an invitation for wisdom, collaboration, and community.
This new Storm Journey Story Cards set comes in a deck format, 4x6 inches. The box includes 26 full-color art cards and a guide booklet full of good questions for conversation.
Each Story Card is numbered for easy reading in story order. But unlike a conventional book, each page of the story is unbound, so the story can be passed around, and each card/page can stand on its own.
When it's time to go deeper, open the guide booklet and look for the soulful questions written for each image. First ask yourself, then ask a friend, ask your children, classmates, coworkers, congregation, city council-- whomever-- what they see in these images and how they would answer these questions.
Listen well to the stories and ideas that emerge. Pay attention to the feelings and challenges carried in the conversation. And notice the wisdom, creativity, and good will that's likely to rise up. Imagine ways to put these gifts into practice.
I want to make it easy for group leaders to make copies of the questions and use them! Once this campaign is funded, I'll create a low-cost, downloadable print file of all of the conversation questions. Campaign supporters will be invited to download this file for free.
Finally, please create your own questions, dream your own dreams, and make up new ways to use and expand on the Storm Journey story. This vision was given to me to pass forward to you, and now it's your turn.
Where Did the Storm Journey Story Come From?
Ten years ago I had a powerful dream of an incoming storm. I created 13 simple illustrations soon after, with one word each, to represent that dream and my response.
Then I waited, wondering what would come next. On silent retreat about 6 months later, I was given (in a kind of vision) 13 more surprising images to finish the story.
Then I waited, again, wondering what would come next.
Seven years ago, I finally listened to my inner guidance and overcame enough fear to self-publish the story in a book, called Storm Journey, with a set of questions for reflection. Many dear people pre-ordered to help with the printing costs. Many more people bought and used the story with groups on retreat or in workshops, or at home with their family or for their own encouragement. I shared it often as I taught or offered spiritual direction. The images and metaphors inspired people and got us talking about real and important things.
When it came time to reprint the book for the fourth time, I found out that the company had changed its printing presses and could no longer make my books. So I waited, wondering what would come next. (Yep, it's a theme.)
Two years ago, I self-published two decks of Art & Wisdom Cards, with the generous help of 308 people who supported my first Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign. (THANK YOU!!) Lots and lots of other people are using these decks for inspiration and conversation, and I'm absolutely thrilled! So I started to wonder about making the Storm Journey book into another kind of deck. I remembered that my favorite way to share the Storm Journey story has always been to pass it around a circle, hand to hand, one card/page at a time.
So I waited, wondering when the time would come.
This spring, my wife Hollin was diagnosed with breast cancer. (Her prognosis is good, and she’s come through rather well, all things considered.) That storm in our lives delayed this project a little bit, but made it even more clear to me that we all need more creative ways to talk about hard things. The current political and climate storms urge me to share Storm Journey as a potential tool to start conversations that are otherwise too tricky or divisive to begin. I'm so excited to find out how useful these simple yet profound images and metaphors can be.
So I stopped waiting, got started, and now-- with your help-- we have a chance to print these Storm Journey Story Cards, share them in new ways, and discover together what will come next.
Pledges and Rewards
If you'd like to support this printing project and campaign with a contribution, THANK YOU! Please choose one of the pledge levels listed on the left and follow the prompt to make your payment. You'll see the description of which rewards you'll receive if we reach the fundraising goal. (If the goal isn't met-- though I'm sure we can do it-- your credit card will not be charged.) When we work together, good things happen!
Project Budget & Stretch Goal:
We're raising these funds to cover printing costs for 500 decks and freight ($6500), reward shipping costs ($2875), fees & taxes ($1500), and a little margin.
Your help with this initial printing makes this product possible! After I've shipped out all the campaign rewards, sales of remaining decks will contribute toward reprinting the Story Cards in the future.
Stretch goal: If we meet our campaign goal and reach $2500 beyond it, I intend to make one or two short videos to advertise these Storm Journey Story Cards and my Art & Wisdom Card Decks. It helps so much when people can see my art tools in action, and video can do that. There's a semi-professional video production studio here in Albuquerque available to me at low cost, and if you all can help me raise the extra funds, I'll commit to facing my fears of being on camera. (Gulp.)
Adding Decks to a Reward:
Kickstarter campaigns only allow one reward/pledge choice per customer email. So there are two ways to get more decks added to your pledge:
1. When you check out, add $28 per extra deck above the cost of the reward you are choosing. Then CONTACT ME to let me know! Please use my email if you know it, the message function on this Kickstarter website, or this webpage: https://listenforjoy.com/pages/contact-us . Thanks.
2. Use a second, different email address of yours to create a second pledge for yourself, and check out as usual. Remember that you'll need to check this email for any updates and for the address survey at the end of the campaign.
Note: If you're choosing a limited reward like a conversation, or an art original, be sure you make your pledge in that category to claim it, then add the extra money for decks on top of that. (Not the other way around!)
In any case, CONTACT ME so I know to take care of your special preferences. Thank you!
Shipping fees are included in the price of your pledge. Hurrah!
Only one shipping address per pledge, and US addresses only for this campaign. (I'm sorry, international friends-- I can't risk the variance in international shipping and keep to my budget. I am still unable to send packages overseas, though I am working on finding a sales channel in Canada.)
Campaign supporters will receive a short email survey from me (through Kickstarter) right after the campaign ends, asking for your shipping address.
My goal is to deliver your packages by December 15. I hope to send them earlier since I've built in a little extra time-- I'll let you know when they're on the way.
This campaign and reward delivery dates are closer to the holidays than I wanted them to be-- because my wife, Hol, had breast cancer surgery and recovery this summer and fall. Yet coming through that storm in our lives makes me even more eager to share the Storm Journey Story Cards with you all!
I appreciate your patience and support. I will do everything I can to be sure we all receive our decks for holiday giving.
Sessions with Melanie: I've made 12 of these rewards available. First pledged, first served.
Original art: Only 1 original painting reward is available. See images below, and click the picture for more details from my website.
Special Edition, signed "Story of Hope" Art Print
Over and over I am honored and amazed by the incredible privilege it is to make art and share the images and tools I create. Once again, I gratefully anticipate our success in this community effort to make and share this hopeful story! Thank you more than I can ever say-- for your time, your support, and your trust.
Risks and challenges
This project is well under way, already designed and into production. I'm finishing final edits on the booklet text, and final proofing for the color parts. I'm using the same amazing printing company, J.S. McCarthy Printers, who printed my Art & Wisdom Card Decks-- so I know these will be well-made and beautiful.
I see two risks:
1. Shipping timing: My goal is to deliver deck and art print packages by December 15. I have a bit of extra time built in, so we should have them for holiday giving. My wife's breast cancer treatment has delayed my timing this year, so there is a small risk the decks could arrive just at Christmas, not early.
2. Sell out: These Story Cards could be so popular, I need to order a second round of decks. In that case, we'll do a happy dance (!!) and then I will ship out packages in the order of pledges received. My printer is here in the US and has a really good turnaround time, so we'll hustle joyfully.
Thanks for taking this journey with me to fund these Storm Journey Story Card Decks!
