More people are learning Chinese these days – some install mobile apps; some enroll themselves into classes; while others travel to China for direct immersion.
There is a group of people who are intrigued by Chinese characters yet, feel intimidated at the same time. Could this be you?
You are not sure of where to start. Chinese characters appear far too complicated...
A Little Daily Dose is designed to spark your interest in Chinese and be a good companion during the period between taking the first step and having confidence to take it further.
/// WHAT IS “A LITTLE DAILY DOSE”? ////////////
A Little Daily Dose consists of a storybook and a portable handbook of vocabularies.
Through four bilingual short stories, color-coded Chinese characters will be slowly introduced to you.
/// ABOUT THE CREATORS ////////////
Linzy is a freelance designer with a passion for books. Though she spends most of her time conceptualizing major events and campaigns, she finds time to work on indie projects that have special meaning for her.
“A Little Beijing – Your Niche Travel Guide”, self-published in 2008, introduced travelers to a new way to explore a city via postcards. Based on a route less traveled, travelers were encouraged to send their thoughts back to themselves on postcards. Upon their return home, they would find the perfect souvenir - stamped mementos from their travels.
In 2015, Linzy collaborated with award-winning design agency, Beamy, to create “BAO WOW – The Buns We Love”, a two-tiered Dim Sum box set with 12 Bao magnets and a handbook on Baos (Chinese Buns). The following year, this unique design received the Hermes Creative Platinum Award, A’Design Graphic & Communication Award, Graphis Design Annual Award and K-Design Award.
Jon is a senior software engineer at the Wikimedia Foundation. He built the Wikipedia mobile site and is involved in various open source projects supporting open knowledge. He strives to build things that remove barriers for non-technical people to empower them in fulfilling their dreams. Jon likes to write about the projects he works on, with a focus on the non-technical human side of things. His article "Why It Took A Long Time To Build That Tiny Link Preview on Wikipedia” topped Hacker news in April this year.
Jon loves to read the old fashioned way and is curious about anything that helps us retain, gain understanding or celebrate the beauty of different cultures.
/// THE BIRTH OF “A LITTLE DAILY DOSE” ////////////
When Jon and Linzy fell in love in 2014, they were an English man in San Francisco and a Singaporean woman in Shanghai. They got married in 2016.
Linzy moved to San Francisco to share Jon's world and Jon started learning the Chinese language to share Linzy's.
Marriage changes everything.......
Linzy realized she had to pause from time to time to translate thoughts in her head. While explaining Chinese terms and phrases to Jon, she was grateful for her bilingual education. She started writing and illustrating stories with the idea of making a book that Jon, and many others, could read.
Since then, much has changed. Not only was Jon able to read the stories, he started making notes and asking questions. The book continues to evolve as part of these culture exchanges and they can't wait to share this with you and the world.

Risks and challenges
With a project that does not conform to the usual genres of books, it is hard to find a publisher who would take up something out of the norm. To decide on self-publishing is probably the biggest risk and challenge of all but if the project gets successfully funded, it is half the battle won!
Once the green light is "ON", "work-in'progress" will be updated to keep everyone in the loop. Although laying out the book of vocabularies could get quite laborious, it will be done meticulously (so no worries)....... following that, an extra month is allocated for anything that could happen during production.
