We take inspiration from a famous Oslo landmark, the Oslo Opera House, designed by Snøhetta. We love the clean, simple lines, the beautiful Carrara marble, and how the building integrates with nature and the surrounding landscape.

We launched our first Oslo Opera House-inspired watch collection on Kickstarter last year, and raised $965,768 with the help of the Kickstarter community.

Over the last 12 months we have been quietly developing this new collection in response to requests from our community for new watch styles and colour options!

What is a chronograph?

A chronograph is a watch that has stopwatch functionality. Chronographs are traditionally used by pilots and astronauts, but they can be be very useful in many other parts of daily life; for instance, in measuring athletic performance, timing your workouts, or learning how long it takes to grill a piece of steak to perfection.

How do the different parts work?

The two push buttons start, stop and reset the stopwatch. There are 3 eyes on the watch. On the top-right, you have the second hand of the watch. The other two are 30-minute and 12-hour counters that change as the second counter for the stopwatch runs past a minute. To check the stopwatch time, you read the bottom eye (for hours), the top-left eye (for minutes), and the second counter.

What’s a “tachymeter” and how does it work?

The tachymeter (pronounced ‘ta-KIM-i-ter’) is a scale inscribed on the rim. In conjunction with the second counter, it helps you measure speed. Our tachymeter (which is base-60) allows you to measure the speed of any task or performance that takes between 0 and 60 seconds. After you stop the second counter, you can look at the tachymeter reading where the hand lands to see the speed.

For instance, if it takes 60 seconds to run around a block, the second counter will point to the 12 o'clock position, where the tachymeter reads ‘60’. That means the speed is 60 blocks per hour. If it takes 30 seconds, the tachymeter indicates ‘120’, or a speed of 120 blocks per hour.

A sporty yet refined watch with stopwatch function. The lightly brushed dial has 3 in-set eyes: a second counter, a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour counter. A tachymeter is inscribed on the rim.

• Ronda 5030.D movement
• Case sizes 38mm and 41mm
• Domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating
• Small seconds, 30-minute counter, 12 hour counter
• Water resistant to 3 ATM
• 316L stainless steel case with brushed finish
• Sandblast dial finish
• Interchangeable Italian full grain vegetable-tanned leather straps

What is an automatic watch?

Mechanical watches have captivated watch collectors and connoisseurs for centuries. They’re highly appreciated because they represent the culmination of hundreds of years of engineering innovation.

An automatic watch is a type of mechanical watch powered by motion. Instead of using energy from a battery (like quartz watches) or from manual winding, the watch is powered by the natural movement of your arm as you wear it throughout the day.

You can see parts of the movement oscillate through the glass on the back. It’s quite an incredible thing!

What’s a “sweeping second hand” in mechanical watches?

Unlike in quartz watches, where the second hand moves once per second, the second hand on a mechanical watch makes small micro-movements every second. The ETA 2824-2 movement has an operating frequency of 28,800 beats per hour, which translates to the second hand moving 8 times per second. This gives the illusion of a smooth “sweeping” movement which is loved by many admirers of mechanical watches.

What makes the ETA 2824-2 special?

The Swiss company ETA is one of the most prominent movement makers at the world. Their 2824-2 calibre is known to be remarkably robust and reliable and thus has gained a certain reputation and respect among watch connoisseurs.

What does it mean that the movement has “25 jewels”?

The jewels in a movement are synthetic rubies placed at specific points of friction to improve performance and reduce wear of the metal parts over time.

Why is The Automatic so much more expensive than other Linjer watches?

Most of the price difference is driven by the movement itself. Automatic movements are more expensive than quartz movements because they are much more labour-intensive to produce.

That said, automatic watches using the renowned ETA 2824-2 movement cost often well more than $1,000 USD (we've seen some costing more than $50,000), especially in a slim design like ours, so our price is quite aggressive in comparison to other luxury brands.

Do you offer the Automatic in size 41mm?

This design is very classic, so we only offer it in size 38mm. That said, it looks great on men with larger frames. (It's only been in the last couple of decades that men have started to wear watches larger than size 40mm!)

The Automatic is our highest-end watch yet, and the only mechanical watch in our collection. Powered by the renowned ETA 2824-2 movement.

The design looks deceptively simple, but the impression is distinct. With a sweeping second hand and a date window, this watch is suitable as an everyday watch to add that final polish to your look. (Or you can save it for the special occasions...)

We've worked hard with our manufacturer's engineering team to slim down the case as much as possible. We're proud that we've achieved an 8.4mm case thickness in this watch, giving it a sleek, luxurious look that is typical to watches that sell for several thousand dollars.

Our Automatic watch straps have butterfly clasps.

• Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement (25 jewels)
• Case size 38mm
• Domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Flat sapphire crystal on case back, showing the movement
• Water resistant to 3 ATM
• 316L stainless steel case
• Sandblast dial finish
• Interchangeable Italian full grain vegetable-tanned leather strap (with butterfly clasp)

You will select your size, model and colour after the campaign ends. (You do not have to make a decision now!)

Select a reward for any watch(es) in our new collection.

You’ll receive a survey to specify model, size and colour afterwards.

Since our straps are easy to switch, you can get an extra set. It will be like having two watches in one! Or you can get a spare for the future.

* You will have to manually add $45 USD to your pledge amount for each strap after you select your reward. *

For instance, if you want an Automatic with an extra strap, you should select the Automatic reward of $379, and revise the pledge amount to $424. Want 2 extra straps? Change it to $469. We will know from your pledge amount that you wanted more straps!

You will be able to select additional straps matching the size/style of the watch(es) you pledge for. (e.g. If you are pledging for 1 Chronograph in size 38mm, you will be able to select additional straps that suit Chronographs in size 38mm.)

  • December 17: Finish campaign

We’re Roman Khan and Jennifer Chong, and we created Linjer in 2014.

We’re a Norwegian/Canadian pair united by a common passion for design and a deep appreciation of vegetable-tanned leather and other natural materials.

We’re proudly bootstrapped and owe it to our fantastic community of crowdfunding backers. To date, we’ve raised more than $2 million for our new creative projects through crowdfunding, and we’ve successfully delivered on all of our past campaigns.

Risks and challenges

Delivery time: In manufacturing, there's always a risk that suppliers do not deliver on time. We've been working with our watch manufacturer through many production runs and we haven't had any significant problems. Still, we've added some buffer into our lead time to account for this possibility. We will be extremely hands on with our suppliers to ensure that everything is moving forward smoothly!

Customs: Some countries are known for being very slow with customs, and you probably know if you live in one. We're sorry that we can't put a magic stamp on our packages to help them get through faster.

We'll update you frequently about our progress, and if there are any blips along the way, we'll let you know!
