Lindsey Lee here :) I hope you enjoyed my little video, but RIGHT HERE is where you will get ALL the details about who I am, how I got started, all the things I've been blessed to be able to do, & how it got me to this point... what you are about to read is REALLY long... but if you really want to know details & EXACTLY what I have been doing the past 4 years, this novel is for you... (haha) (scroll to the bottom if you want to skip my life story & read SPECIFICALLY about my plans for this EP)
First of all, I am 22 years old. I have been singing since I could make noise & playing piano since I could climb on the bench. My dad is a minister of music & my mom taught piano & voice for 25 years, so I was pretty much born into a world that revolved around music. Growing up I sang in talent competitions, state fairs, church, & school functions... but that was the extent of it due to growing up in small towns. When I was 18 years old, the moment came when I had to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I knew music was my first love, but all of my friends were going to college to be nurses, teachers, & journalists... I felt very alone in my dream & had no idea how to even go about making it a reality. So my senior year of high school, I started writing songs. I completely FELL IN LOVE with songwriting... it became like breathing to me... almost even more natural than singing or playing piano. With this new-found love, in 2008 when I graduated from high school, I decided to take a huge leap & skip out on college & save up money to move to Nashville...
It's been 4 years since I made that decision, & I've done SO many incredible things within that period of time... 2010 is when I connected with most of you... through a little network we all know as YouTube :) That year I was going through a HUGE transition in my life... a difficult breakup, moving away from my family & home state for the first time ever, the stress of showcasing for major record labels before I was ready... YouTube was my escape from all of that. It let me do what I loved most in the world... connect with people through music. I put up cover after cover after cover & before I knew it, most of my videos had over 500,000 views... One of them now has 730,000! That's insane to me! You guys really have no idea how much you affected me during that time in my life. You gave me so much confidence. To this day, most of the major things I've done in my life rooted from YouTube... such as...
In late 2010, artist Stephen Jerzak contacted me on twitter and asked me if I would go on tour with him as his backup singer... he had seen my videos on YouTube! Of course I said yes... & I got the opportunity of a lifetime. My first ever TOUR... a House of Blues/Fillmore tour across the US & Canada! On this tour, Stephen was the opening band for Far East Movement & Mike Posner! Like I said, it was a huge opportunity for me & I will be forever grateful to Stephen... I met some lifelong friends on that tour, gained experiences I will never forget, & learned SO much about myself as an artist...
The tour ended in October 2010 & I moved back home to MS... I got a call from Charlie Diggs in Houston TX, saying he had seen my videos on Youtube & that I had a little fanbase there! He is a club promotor in Houston, & offered to book me for a week every month to come play shows there. I started doing mini-tours in Houston almost every month November 2010 thru February 2011, just me & my keyboard & 4 hours worth of music each night :) It was SUCH a fun time & played a major role in my story as an artist... I will forever love & cherish my Houston fanclub...
This next part is pure insanity... craziness. It baffles me still to this day. It's crazy how ONE little decision by ONE person can change the lives of so many... One day, in February 2011, I got a facebook message from Robin Jones Doak... here is the exact message:
Lindsey- You are SO talented! I have a band in Nashville that you have a lot in common with. Check them out at www.everlifeonline.com. I would love for you to get together to do some writing with them. Please let me know if you are interested.
I wrote her back immediately & set a date. I was familiar with Everlife because of growing up watching Disney... so of course I jumped at the chance to write with them! I still remember the date... February 15th, 2011 my life changed forever. I drove to Nashville from Hattiesburg, MS to write with Everlife. I walked in the door, some small talk happened, then they asked to hear some ideas I had... so I sang some ideas for them. The lead singer of the band, Julia Ross, stopped me. She asked me the most RANDOM questions that I had no idea why she was asking them. Things like my age, my spiritual beliefs, if I had in-ear monitors, if I was free over the next 6 months... finally I asked her what was up & why she was asking me all these questions. Then she dropped a bomb on me... she told me that she was currently backup singing for Miley Cyrus & that they were looking for another backup singer... we ended up NOT writing a song that day & spent the entire session recording our voices together to send to Miley's managers & band director... less than a month later I was in California interviewing with the Miley camp & signed the contract that day & boom... it happened. Flew home, packed, & was back in California for a month of rehearsals then toured South America, Australia, & the Phillipines backup singing for Miley Cyrus on the Summer 2011 Gypsy Heart Tour... I can't explain to you how surreal it was & how much I grew as a person on that tour. I gained a new outlook on the music industry & my music career... I gained a new bestfriend/roommate/soulmate (Julia Allynn Ross)... & also gained a lotttt of twitter followers :) (thanks Miley...)
After the tour in July 2011, Julia & I got an apartment in Franklin TN... I finally had the money to get my own place & make the move here... for 6 months I lived off of the money from tour & just wrote with tons of people in Nashville & soaked up inspiration... well, the money eventually ran out (like it always does) & I had to get a part-time job as a waitress in January 2012... which turned out to basically be a full-time job... the job itself is great, but working full-time anywhere doing something that is NOT furthering your dreams is EXHAUSTING... mentally & emotionally. So for the past 4 months I've kinda been drowning to be honest... like I said in the video, I've been trying to find the balance between paying the bills but still having time to work on my dream... my music... with a combination of my tax return & 4 months of saving at my waitress job, I finally have enough money to take a little break from work for 2 months & still be able to pay the bills...
So here we are. I'm at this place. All of the above brought me here. Starting tomorrow, May 1st, I have a break for 2 months to completely focus on my artistry... my purpose... I WANT to give you guys ME. In the video I told you everything I have been building in the past 4 years has led up to this moment... because that's exactly how it feels... tours, writing, hard times, working, soaking up inspiriation, growing, maturing... it's all at a boiling point now & I am finally ready to nail down who I am as an artist... I'm finally ready for my first official project... EXCEPT... financially.
I don't know if you guys realize how expensive it is to actually get a good quality recording of a song... not even counting mixing, mastering, & mass production... we're talkin big bucks that I don't have... that's where I need your help. I am spending the month of May writing, writing, writing for this EP... & in June, I am starting the recording process. This kickstarter is 31 days long... it is going to last throughout the month of May... so that when June comes, I can hand my producer $10,000 to record the project I've always dreamed of... in a way, I feel like it's my firstborn child. This is a BIG deal... & I'm so excited to share it with you guys & see the magic that happens in that studio.
I am going to be co-producing this EP with award-winning songwriter Danny Orton... he wrote "Stand" by Rascal Flatts & tons of other hits for Rascal Flatts... he writes with A Rocket To The Moon, Boys Like Girls, Hey Monday, David Archuletta, & many more... I chose Danny as a producer because we really connect on a creative level... he gets me. He gets that I want to make this EP special... I don't care to make 5 cookie-cutter pop songs in order to get signed to a record label... I want to create 5 pieces of art... every note, every lyric, every melody from my soul... & give it to YOU the fans... because I know MY fans appreciate that about me... that I am giving you ME & not what someone else wants me to be. Most professional music industry folks would tell me this description is too long & that I ramble & that I need to lose 15 pounds & that I need to change my style & that I need to write songs that don't take TOO much of a risk creatively..... but this EP isn't for them... it's for ME & the ones who love me for me... & I KNOW that's all of you, my fans. You've been there for me through the darkest of times & have been so patient... You always believe in me... & I can't wait to give you this gift. I hope these incentives excite you, & that you will round up your friends & save up the money because I WANT to do a living room show for you :) I WANT to spend the day with you in the studio... I WANT to write a song with you via skype! Because you deserve it for being so patient with me & for always supporting me... but I need your help financially in order to give you this gift. I promise I won't let you down.
I love all of you so much & thank you for unconditional love, faith, & support.
PS: if I surpass my goal, I can do more with the EP... cooler photography, possibly more songs, better merch, etc. just FYI :)
