I'm an independent fantasy author who, in December of 2010, chose to self-publish instead of pursuing a traditional book deal (i.e. stalking agents on Twitter and cornering editors in public restrooms at conventions to foist my sample chapters on them). Fortunately, it's working out. Tens of thousands of people have downloaded my ebooks. I've heard some people have even read them!
If you haven't yet visited my Emperor's Edge world (it's a little high fantasy and a little steampunk), or spent time with my quirky heroes (one reader called them the A-Team of Steam), I invite you to download the first novel for free at Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or iTunes. Or, if you're a fan of audiobooks, you can listen to the first book for free at Podiobooks or iTunes.
Oh, yeah, that audiobook thing? That's why I'm here.
I started this Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to produce the next Emperor's Edge audiobook. As you can tell from my video, I can barely use a camera, and I don't have the sultry tones of a great narrator, so I've been outsourcing the audiobook creation to the folks at Darkfire Productions. As you might guess, having a novel-length audio produced isn't an inexpensive proposition, especially when you're giving away the finished product for free. I paid for the production of the first two audiobooks out of pocket, but I could definitely use a little help going forward, as this will end up being a six-book series.
How does this Kickstarter thing work?
Kickstarter is a crowd-funding site where artists, musicians, and authors (that would be me) can post projects and ask for financial help in getting them off the ground. The totally rocking folks who "pledge" are rewarded with goodies that will be available if the project is fully funded. You can select from your choice of goodies over on the right.
If the project doesn't meet its fund-raising goal, no money exchanges hands, and you don't get charged for anything.
This is my first time trying Kickstarter, and I've set what I hope is a modest goal for this campaign. If we succeed in reaching the goal, the money will pay for the creation of the next Emperor's Edge audiobook. If we go over...well, I did mention that it's a six-book series, right? ;)
Seriously, though, I'll make sure any extra funds go to a good use (audiobook production, editing of future books, cover art design, etc.), and I appreciate your willingness to help out.
If there's anything you'd like to see added to the "shop" at the right, just let me know. Thanks!
