A special thank you to every single backer and supporter!
Together we have created a founding community for the DIY Concrete House Ring, you are incredible and without you this project would not have been possible. Thank you for allowing me to share this very personal project with you and by doing so I hand over the original narrative, allowing you to create something beyond its initial making; its now your journey and I cant wait to see where you take it.
Thank you for your advice, feedback and inspiration throughout the campaign. I am so grateful but also astounded and completely blown away by your support. The end of the Kickstarter campaign marks the beginning of new opportunities and as I continue to develop and improve the product I will not forgot where it all began, right here with you!
The DIY Concrete Rings are a high quality silver and concrete composite unisex ring. Available in 5 unique designs or a design your own alternative, the ring is packaged in a DIY kit, which invites you to experience the unique and rewarding process of making. Created by architecture graduate Linda Bennett (aka archi-ninja), the design is rooted in the architecture and construction industry.
The DIY Concrete Rings are a statement piece, offering multiple narratives that are subject to each unique making. The saltbox roof and gable roof designs allow you to integrate personal associations with the meaning of “home.” The new minimal ring design and the design your own alternative allows you to more freely integrate any narrative through the unique DIY process.
In one long sentence or less...this project marks the incredible beginning of the WORLD'S FIRST DIY Concrete Ring, made of HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS, incorporating a COMPLEX PROCESS MADE SIMPLE inviting you to SHARE IN THE STORY of CREATIVE OWNERSHIP for yourself, a friend, loved one, family member, colleague or just about anyone you know that enjoys the beautiful adventure of awesome ideas....
THE WORLD'S FIRST
Grounded within the architecture and construction industry, your DIY Concrete Ring brings together materials, knowledge and technologies from various trades otherwise not accessible. This is the world's first concrete ring that has undergone refinement in order to bring this incredible process into your hands as a DIY kit.
The DIY Concrete Ring is available in 5 unique and unisex styles; the saltbox roof, gable roof, and minimal design. To create something truly unique and special you have the option to design your own ring.
COMPLEX PROCESS MADE SIMPLE
The DIY Concrete Ring contains easy, step-by-step instructions and tips on how to prepare, cast and finish your very own ring.
The ring is casted within a complex but easy to use moulding system of silicone. Your new DIY kit contains 16 individual components that were specifically designed and manufactured for your DIY Concrete Ring.
I have recorded, tested and iterated the entire process which is transferred to you in a step-by-step guide, annotated with a series of personal notes and tips of the interesting variables discovered along the way. The process has also been documented on film for further reference when constructing your DIY Concrete Ring (check out the how to section below)!
Your DIY Concrete Ring is not limited by the aesthetics of materiality. You are free to create infinite colour and texture possibilities (some of my favourite castings are shown below).
The DIY process makes transparent the technology and construction behind your DIY Concrete Ring, merging the often disparate roles of maker and owner.
No two rings are identical, through the process of making you create the personality of your ring; represented by tiny cracks, imperfections and scratches that continue to evolve over the lifetime of the ring.
The DIY kit empowers you through the process of making to embed diverse and unique associations about the meaning of “home”. By connecting your narrative to your ring it takes on a life beyond it’s original conception.
HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS
Your DIY Concrete Ring is a statement piece made from two primary materials.
- A high quality silver inner component is machine casted to achieve 12 accurate ring sizes ensuring a smooth and soft surface resting against your finger. Similar to the working of rebar in building design, the silver component contains a system of internal rods to hold the concrete composite in place.
- Surrounding the silver piece is a hand casted (DIY) concrete composite. The unique proportions of the concrete cast offers a comfortable fit and lightweight on your hand.
SHARING IN THE STORY
The DIY Concrete Ring is about connecting with people and home through your personal journey.
You can make your ring solo or with friends and family. When you receive positive comments from a passersby (and you will!), share the story and its process.
DIY concrete fun goes minimal; if the saltbox and gable roof design isn’t your style then you will love the new Minimal Concrete Ring design!
Pledge to support the 'MINIMAL DESIGN' and and choose to receive your favourite:
In a world where anything is possible, pledge to design your own ring style and together we can create something truly unique and entirely custom-made: the DIY kit, extreme quality, fun process and ability to embed your own narrative stays the same!
Below are some ideas but this reward level is truly limitless! Lets work together to create something special.
Your DIY Concrete Ring kit comes with 16 unique components. Once received, you are ready to get started. Be sure to read the step-by-step instructions (and notes) or follow along with the detailed video.
Let the fun begin!

The Replica Timber Ring was a process iteration on the journey and exploration that eventually led to the DIY Concrete Ring Kit. These rings share in the original story and represent the roots of this project. If DIY or Concrete are not quite your thing, these rings come finished and ready to wear for any occasion serving as a great reminder of an incredible project and journey (available in all ring sizes and designs)!
I am so confident you will love the project that if you pledge to support the DIY Concrete Ring on Kickstarter and decide the kit isn’t for you then you may return it for a full refund. Feel free to open your kit, check out all the parts and ask me any questions but for a full refund make sure you return the kit within one month delivery and before getting your DIY gloves on!
The first Concrete House Ring was conceived in 2012 when I relocated from Sydney to Melbourne. The original rings were larger and contained a silver outer piece.
Twenty of the original rings are available exclusively to the Kickstarter backer community via the highest pledge level of 'Original Handmade Concrete House Ring' (please note the original is not DIY)!
The Concrete House Ring has evolved into a DIY project bringing into focus the process of making and by doing so grounds the ring further in the construction industry.
Below are castings of the DIY Concrete Rings available exclusively to the Kickstarter backer community (final product of the DIY Concrete Ring kit - saltbox and gable roof design shown)!
The DIY Concrete Ring was instigated by a journey through themes of scale, intimacy, meaning, memory and experience.
The ring reduces the overwhelming scale of architecture into something more tangible and accessible. The symbol of home allows its complexity to be captured in a simple and iconic image.
The ring is intimate, directly connecting to our body through the hand, a part of our body that constantly exchanges and engages with our surroundings.
The ring calls into question the meaning of ownership, not as a commodity, but rather, as personal authorship.
Calling upon our memory of associative place, each of us have unique memories and interpretations of “home,” which we are enabled to embody into the ring through the process of making.
Experience naturally opens the narrative of our lives. The ring evolves over its lifespan, taking on its' own story, the ring will fade, crack and chip as it earns a history of use and misuse through your own journey in life.
The DIY Concrete Ring project is one of continuous design, material and technology evolution. Through constant feedback from designers, builders, architects, material manufacturers, friends and family, the ring has taken it’s shape, reinforced by a strong network of professional experience (click below to check out the silicone mould components, saltbox roof, gable roof and minimal designs interactively).
The icon of the house enunciates the memory of home, where families grow and contract, habitual routines are developed, and our notions of safety and placemaking are formed.
Hundreds of designs have been tested, ensuring the final design sits comfortably on your finger. Each iteration has allowed for the refinement of the ring's profile, size, weight, colour and texture, as well as the iconic recognition of home.
Developing the ring’s material process was essential to ensure the stability and durability of the physical components.
The concrete composite has undergone hundreds of iterations to determine a unique ratio of cement, aggregate, colouration and epoxy resin. Each iteration has allowed for the development of a consistent, long lasting and viable ratio.
The silver and casting components were developed using complex 3D computer modeling programs, bringing together expertise from various trades, including architecture, engineering, construction and product design.
I am so excited to share with you this very personal design project. I hope that you love the idea but in order for the DIY Concrete Ring to reach production I need your support. Your contribution will go towards the minimum initial production run and the upfront cost of set-up.
I have spent the past year intensively developing this design and testing prototypes and I am now ready to bring this project into your home and onto your hand. I can not think of a better community than Kickstarter to break ground on this exciting project.
Please join me on this incredible journey by backing my project and sharing this with your colleagues, family and friends.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read about the DIY Concrete Ring and with your help I can not wait to bring this concept into a reality. If you would like to connect with me please shoot me an email at email@example.com or message me here on Kickstarter!
The DIY Concrete Ring is available in 12 sizes. The best way to determine your ring size is to have your local jeweller measure your finger (this should only take a few minutes and often they are more than happy to help). Once you have your respective ring size, you can use our chart below to find the DIY Concrete House Ring equivalent.
REUSE (AGAIN AND AGAIN)
The DIY kit allows you to make a single silver and concrete composite ring. It is possible however, to reuse your high quality silicone casting mould to make other rings from different materials. My favourite trick is to create a replica crayon ring providing a beautiful juxtaposition between permanent and temporary. Its a great way to involve your family (kids love this one!) or create gifts for other people.
The below rings were created by melting crayola crayons and pouring the liquid into the used mould. So simple and each ring takes less than 5 minutes to make! There is also some great online resources if you would like to make your own mixture from scratch.
The below rings were created by mixing craft acrylic and feathers before pouring into a mould. I bought both from my local craft store for less than $10 AUD. So incredibly simple and each ring takes less than 1/2 hour to make! (excluding cure time). I will keep you updated with more reuse ideas throughout the campaign and beyond! Be sure to get in touch if you would like to see me make anything in particular: firstname.lastname@example.org or message me here on Kickstarter!
The concept of recycling and reuse has become vital to the construction industries where this project finds its roots, likewise I can not wait to see your creativity and that of the Kickstarter community extend these concepts into new and exciting DIY projects!
Risks and challenges
The hard yards with suppliers and fine-tuning of the process has already been completed with now only the need for achieving the necessary funding to get this project off the ground. Further to my personal expertise in working with complex projects comes the further knowledge of collaboration and teamwork. From the initial stages of this project I have constantly consulted with and been advised by not only the various experts of the fields brought together for this project, but other Kickstarter creators on their experiences and recommendations on how to best deliver to this incredible community.
Meeting Deadlines: With all Kickstarter projects this is one of the most critical elements of delivering a project not only successfully, but in a timely manner without forfeiting the quality or individuality that comes with the supporting of unique projects. The hard work and effort of this project thus far demonstrates the drive and capacity to deliver not only on your expectations, but to exceed them.
I can think of no better place to continue on this incredible journey than Kickstarter and promise to deliver on this project to the absolute fullest of my capabilities.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
