This project was successfully funded on July 12, 2013.

A book dedicated to teaching artists and all makers how to start, run, and market their own business using the latest technology.

About this project

"The Neo-Artist" is a book that will teach you about the latest in hardware and software for turning your creative ideas into physical objects. It also teaches you how to leverage other aspects of technology to market and sell your work.  Whether you haven't started your business yet, or have been running one for years, there will be lots of information in this book to help you get to the next level of your success and beyond.

STRETCH GOAL:  If we reach $5,000 I'll include for anyone that pledged $20 or more an additional PDF report detailing what I learned about Kickstarter by doing this project.  I did a TON of research before doing this project, but learned even more by doing it.  If you are thinking about doing a Kickstarter, this report will help you learn how to better manage your time and efforts, as well as get Kickstarter specific publicity.

Here I am explaining 3D printing at SIGGRAPH 2012

Even if you work for a company right now, wouldn't it be nice to have extra income from your own creative ideas?  Also, we've seen companies go out of business and even be shut down by companies that bought them, firing hundreds of artists at a time. There really is no such thing as "job security" any more.

Here's a sneak peak at the draft version of the table of contents (elements are subject to change) :

High-Tech tools for making art and products, when and when not is the best time to use them? (When are traditional methods a better idea than going high-tech and visa versa.)

What are the tools and what can you make with them? (This is a really long section because there are way more high-tech tools out there than most people realize. This chapter is broken down into sections for 2D artists as well as ones for 3D artists and for inventors / makers)

What Services can make your art and products for you? (broken down into sections for 2D artists as well as ones for 3D artists and inventors / makers as mentioned above)

What tools are available and affordable for you to own? (broken down into sections just as mentioned above)

What software will you need? (free open source and commercial options)

Where when and how do you sell your art? (broken down into passive and non-passive forms of income as well as physical and online places)

How do you make a living at it? (marketing, how to keep coming up with new ideas {creativity boosting methods}, organization, self motivation and more. This is the section that really gets into the nitty gritty of running your own business no matter what you want to sell.)

--

Included in the book is a list of links to powerful, free, open-source software you can use to design your art and inventions.

A Neo-Artist doesn't have to starve or suffer for their art, so a few of the methods taught in this book use a passive income business model. With these methods, you design your product, and then other people will make, sell, and ship your product directly to your customers for you. This is done "on demand" as your customers buy them, and charge you only what it costs to make the goods.  You don't have to invest in keeping stock.  Not only does this require almost no money investment from you, but it also gives you more time to be creative and come up with even more ideas for things to make you more money. Imagine something like Cafe Press, only with much higher quality and your own original designs of jewelry, books, electronics, fabric, etc.  With most of these services, you choose whatever mark-up you want.

Neo-Artists are passionate about creating and want to share their creations with the world.  So the book also goes into great detail on easy ways to organize your projects and marketing plans.  This allows you to get the most out of the time that you spend working on your business and get back to doing what you love: making things.

The book is based on what I teach in an hour-long lecture, as well as in personal consultations.  I am also adding a lot more into the book than there is time to talk about in the lecture.

Teaching students about using lasers to carve wood from a drawing.
Teaching students about using lasers to carve wood from a drawing.

Over 7 years ago I decided to leave a 12-year career in the animation industry to pursue working for myself.  Early on, I knew that if I could figure out a way to make a living selling my own art, inventions, and ideas, I'd want to help other creative people do it, too.

This is my mission: to help talented people get out of the hum-drum everyday workforce (rat race).  I don't want anyone with creative juices flowing through their veins to waste their talents on making other people rich, while working insanely long hours and rarely being properly rewarded for it.

About 6 years ago things really started coming together, and thanks to new websites and technology becoming available in the last 4 years, it is now more possible than ever to break free from your day job and make your own way in this world.

I've put 7 years of hard work, and tens of thousands of dollars into figuring out the best ways to survive without having to take on a day job.  I've filtered out the mistakes, and put all the best methods into this book.  I'm still alive, so it looks like they work!

Am I promising that buying this book will make you rich?  No.

Am I promising that when you buy this book you will make enough money to quit your job? No.

I do promise that I am putting into this book every successful technique I have used to bring in over $200,000 dollars in sales of my art and other products in countries all over the world. I am also including all of the techniques I use to be more organized and productive

How much money you generate will depend entirely on how much time you put into making and marketing your products, as well as how well your products are received by the public.

This book will be a major shortcut for you, because it can save you from making the same mistakes I made early on.

By following the methods covered in this book, you will be more capable of getting your art, crafts, products, inventions, etc. out to the people who will want to buy them.  In many cases, as soon as you sell just one item, you will more than pay for the cost of the E-book.  Even if you aren't sure that you want to sell your creations, but just want to learn about the latest high-tech ways to make stuff, this book will teach you all about what is out there, and how to get access to the right equipment.

Making your own custom fabric, toys, books, jewelry, electronics, machines, inventions, housewares, tools, and many other items is more accessible and inexpensive than in all of human history.  I've already done the hard work of finding out where to get these things made, and am sharing all that information with you in this book.

You will learn multiple techniques I use to "trick myself" out of being lazy and get more work done, creating a powerful work ethic.  You will also learn how to cut out the middle man and not need stores, galleries, or agents to get your creations into the hands of people who want it.  This will save you a lot of time, and let you keep more of the profit for yourself.  Of course, I also sell my work in stores and galleries, so there is advice about the best way to deal with them and how to price your work.

2 different sizes of my designer toy on the shelf at a store in Little Tokyo, LA.

You will learn how to create and grow a fan base

You will learn how I got publicity numerous times on the number one morning news show in Los Angeles which promoted me to millions of people.

Whether you are an inventor, 2D artist, CG artist, sculptor, crafter, or other type of maker, you will learn from my years of experience, as well as from interviews with top people in each of those fields.

The only difference between you and big successful companies is that you haven't done the work yet to build the products and fan base.  This book will help you understand how to do that.

You will learn how to bridge the gap between you and the people who will want to buy your creations.

If you want to start getting your work out there, or supercharge your existing business, pledge now and in a few months you will have in front of you a huge amount of time-tested advice from people who have already gotten where you want to be.  Join the ever growing movement of people who make things and share them with the world!  For less than the cost of a nice dinner, you can have the all of this great knowledge.

Here's what a couple of folks have to say about me and my credentials:

"I've known Lincoln Kamm for almost 20 years now and in all those years what I have always admired about Lincoln is his enthusiasm, drive, and focus for the projects he is involved in.  Lincoln really takes his time to study and fully understand the medium he's taking on.  But what makes him really impressive to me is not just his drive and dedication to learn and master the process, the nuts and bolts of a new medium, but his ability to then turn it on it's head and approach it from a different and unique angle. And that's a word that really describes Lincoln to me, UNIQUE. Each and every project I have ever seen from him all possess his unique sense of humor, his unique creativity, and his unique way of looking at the world.

I always look forward to seeing what's next with Lincoln, because whatever it is it will most definitely be something special."

-Craig McCracken  Creator/Executive Producer: The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends

-----------------------------

This Spring, Lincoln Kamm, an Alumnus of the Character Animation Program at CalArts, gave a very inspiring presentation on the use of technology to create art. It was amazing to see the things that were produced.  He stepped you through the creating of the art piece to how to market it.

He showed another way that has supported him throughout his career without the need to rely on industry jobs or other work. He was very thorough and informative on how to create the art, how to produce it, and what to you might want to avoid. This was an option that apparently was very appealing to his audience, as many of them stayed long after the presentation to talk further with him. Everyone should have a chance to see this presentation.  It is another way to think about showcasing your talent.

"I've seen Lincoln go from animator to business man, marketing expert, and high-tech art tool teacher. He's consulted for me on upcoming products, and has saved me endless amounts of time and money by sharing his expertise. His passion for helping artists bring their ideas to market is apparent."

Here are some of the rewards to choose from for helping make this happen:

To thank you for donating $5 or more, I will email you a PDF of the top 10 tips any maker should know if they want to sell what they make.

For $20 you get the main reason I'm doing this Kickstarter, "The Artist's High-Tech Guide Book" E-book.   As well as the PDF of top tips for makers, artists, crafters, and inventors. That's only $15 for the ebook! (The ebook's estimated retail price after this Kickstarter is $30-$40.)  You will also get the book before it is available to the public at large.

Put on your neck a mash up of cat memes and high tech manufacturing!  A true conversation piece on many levels. My latest design, "Bread Cat"  AKA "Toast Kitty" is 3D printed in a wax-like resin, then cast in Sterling Silver using the lost-wax casting method, then polished.  It is almost 3/4 of an inch wide and comes in a gift box.  If you would like an 18 inch Sterling Silver chain with it, please pledge an additional $12.

Another one of my Sterling Silver designs to pick from is the "Dapper Octopus".  This pendant is almost 1 inch wide by about 1 and 3/4 inch tall with wrap-around details right down to the suction cups on the tentacles.   If you would like an 18 inch Sterling Silver chain with it, please pledge an additional $12.

Or choose my most popular Sterling Silver pendant design, the Heart Shaped Rib-Cage.  This pendant is 1 inch wide by about 1 inch tall    If you would like an 18 inch Sterling Silver chain with it, please pledge an additional $12.

I am also making available some Skype consultations with me to help you with any advice you need with your projects at special Kickstarter limited discount pricing.

Thank you for taking the time to look over my Kickstarter!  Please feel free to share this page with any creative people in your life and we can get more and more creative people to realize that they don't have to work for other people.

Exciting news!  This project has caught the attention of Readmill.com and they did a blog post about it, as well as are getting involved by offering an early preview of part of the book to all it's members who support this Kickstarter.  So if you aren't a member already, after you back this project, go sign up!

Risks and challenges

The entire structure of the book is already worked out in the form of extensive mind maps and notes, but I still have more interviews to do so I can get additional perspective from other top makers / artists, as well as write out all my notes and mind maps into book form. There is of course the possibility that one or more of the listed artists may back out of doing their interview, but I also have many other artists that are interested in being involved.

Then the book needs to be sent to the editor, get the layout worked out, and finally formatted properly before I can send out the ebook. For those of you that order the physical version of the book, it will take an additional couple of weeks to get it back from the printer.

I am estimating it will take me 2 months to finish up the book, but to give me some wiggle room, I am putting 4 months as the time frame for finishing the book. Hopefully that will be more than enough time.

The amount I am trying to raise is the minimum needed to get this finished, but please keep pledging even after the goal is met since I will be able to add some awesome stretch goal rewards if enough people are interested.
