Technischer Prototyp
Gleicht dem Endprodukt in Aussehen, Funktion und Herstellungsweise.

LIMINAL is a minimal adaptable lighting unit that provides multifunctional usage scenarios. Rather than providing a single way of use, LIMINAL transforms itself via its kinetic joints and adjustable lighting modules.
Minimal: Inspired by a single line
LIMINAL draws its inspiration from a single line. It is a lighting unit with a plain form and a compact design. With its foldable body, LIMINAL can be easily packed and does not take up too much space.
Adaptability: Possibilities abound
LIMINAL is suitable for use in different kinds of spaces;
Home
Co-working space
Studio
Restaurant
Library
Outdoors
...or simply wherever you want.
Usage scenarios for LIMINAL
LIMINAL can adapt to various usage scenarios through its kinetic structure. This allows LIMINAL to be used in many locations, for a variety of purposes. The main usage variations are as follows:
Task lighting
Table lamp
Wall unit
...amongst many other possibilities.
Robustness: A durable structure
LIMINAL is made out of solid, high-caliber aluminium blocks that are CNC-milled, powder coated and refined through traditional craftsmanship. It includes custom designed, patent-pending, 270 degree rotatable stainless steel joints, IP20 certification as well as durable cable connections. Diffuse, high-grade LED lights are placed on two surfaces, with multiple switch outputs.
Foldable & Rotatable Kinetic Framework
Making the 270 degree rotatable joint pieces took many months of research and development. The team has worked on numerous prototypes to find the right solution, and came up with this unique and patent-pending system that gives LIMINAL its characteristic and unique form.
Craftsmanship: Made in Istanbul
A partnership with local craftsmen in Istanbul played a fundamental role in LIMINAL's manufacturing process, and differentiates the product from its mass-manufactured alternatives. This collaboration with craftsmen in the vicinity of the design studio enabled rapid iteration and a detail-driven product development.

How the Idea Was Born
The idea was born upon the needs of ATÖLYE, an interaction and creativity platform based in Istanbul. When we were searching for the proper furniture for our space, we couldn’t find the perfect fit, so we come out with our own solution and develop CNVS, ATÖLYE Labs’ own furniture brand that design dynamic and multifunctional furnitures and accessories for work and learning spaces. After that, we’ve created the first prototype of LIMINAL, the lightning accessory range of CNVS, with the collaboration between ATÖLYE Labs and Buşra Tunç.
Team
Commissioned by CNVS, a new generation work and learning spaces furniture brand, as a collaboration between ATÖLYE Labs and Buşra Tunç, where Buşra’s concept and design was enhanced by ATÖLYE Labs' transdisciplinary team, which combines skill sets in fields that range from graphics to electronics, from user experience to materials.
Concept & Design: Buşra Tunç
Strategy: Engin Ayaz [ATÖLYE Labs]
Technology: Ahmet Alpat [ATÖLYE Labs]
Graphics: Ece Çiftçi, Ufuk Barış Mutlu [ATÖLYE Labs]
Video Production: Özgür Önurme, Murathan Sırakaya [ATÖLYE Labs]
Team Members [ATÖLYE Labs]: Kerem Alper, Elif Karaköse, Yılmaz Korkmaz, Beril Odabaşı
External Collaborators: Yüksel Demirel [Prototyping], Berkay Tunalı [Process Video Direction], Umut Gonca [Process Video Music]
Risiken und Herausforderungen
We have waited to get the product as refined as we can before we launched our Kickstarter campaign. With all the research and prototyping at hand along with an experienced team, we do not anticipate any significant risks throughout the delivery process and can promise you that if we reach our goals, we will follow our promise through. Aside from that, having backed many projects in this ecosystem, we advocate transparency and will keep you updated throughout, even when issues arise in this journey.
Over the next few months, we will focus on further refining the manufacturing details such as LED production, cabling, embedded PCBs, packaging, switches and chassis production. Overall, we have liaised with all potential candidates and collaborators, and are just waiting for Kickstarter feedback before we come out with final production plan.
Regarding specifics, rapid evolution of the LED industry may suggest alternate technical systems, yet we also see this as an opportunity more than a risk. Moreover, for dimming and color-shifting, we have done initial component and assembly research, yet will have to do further testing to ensure reliability. For PCBs and other electronics, we have good experts within ATÖLYE, our co-working space, where we can do hands-on prototyping at the local Makerlab as well. Finally, for packaging, we are planning to refine our design using recycled cardboard and sponge as key materials, the results are to be tested further.
Thank you for your contribution in making LIMINAL a reality. As a LIMINAL supporter, your name will be featured on our website. We will also make sure to update you on our progress!
