Women Destroy Science Fiction! - Release Date Imminent!
The wait is almost over! Things have MOSTLY gone according to schedule, and the issue is going to be released on June 1 as originally planned. But we have some good news, some bad news, and some more good news.
The first bit of good news first. Because of a quirk of traditional offset book printing, we had to add a number pages to the end of the issue, right at the last minute. So we decided to add a BONUS STORY to the Kickstarter edition (which, for purposes of publishing nomenclature hereafter shall be referred to as the "Limited Edition). So Kickstarter backers will get this special limited edition of the issue, which includes this bonus story.
The bonus story is one that was submitted to WDSF, but we couldn't take it because the roster was already full; however, we ended up buying it for a regular issue of LIGHTSPEED. But now it gets to be in WDSF after all! It's called "They Tell Me There Will Be No Pain" by Rachael Acks. The ebook edition Kickstarter backers receive will also include this bonus story, but the regular edition will not.
Although we initially added this bonus story because of a publishing snafu, in the end it turned out to just be a good, really cool thing that we were happy to do because it rewards our backers by making their version of the issue a little extra special.
The bad news is that there will be a slight delay in receiving your print editions (for the 700 or so of you who backed at that level). You should still be receiving them in the month of June, but right now it's looking more like it'll be in the second half of the month some time. (For Domestic backers, that is; for international backers...well, it'll probably take about two-three weeks longer than it usually takes.)
We're really sorry about this! The truth is, we just haven't done a print project like this before, and it turned out to take a lot longer than we were anticipating to put all the pieces together. But in the end it did turn out really well, and we think you'll be happy with the results. On the plus side, you will still get your ebook edition of the issue right on time, so you'll still be able to dive right in if you can't wait.
And for the second bit of good news: Both the regular and limited print editions will include original illustrations for 8 of the stories in the issue. The limited edition will feature those illustrations in full color, while the regular edition will have them in black and white.
So: All in all a very successful project, and we can't wait to share it with all of you!
