LIGHTSPEED #1 was launched in June 2010, and now eight years later, we’ve reached a milestone: Issue 100. To celebrate, we’re publishing a super-sized issue, with ten original stories–more than twice the amount of original fiction than usual–plus ten reprints and some special nonfiction to boot. And to make things even more commemorative, the vast majority of our fiction in this issue, both original and reprint, comes from our most frequently published fiction contributors—the LIGHTSPEEDiest writers to ever LIGHTSPEED. It’s a distillation of what we’re made of, and we’re beyond excited to share it with all of you.

Our cover art this month comes from Hugo award-winning artist (and fifty-three-time LIGHTSPEED illustrator) Galen Dara, illustrating new science fiction from Vylar Kaftan: “Her Monster, Whom She Loved.” We also have new SF from Carrie Vaughn (“Harry and Marlowe and the Secret of Ahomana”), Adam-Troy Castro (“The Last to Matter”), Ken Liu (“The Explainer”), and Sofia Samatar (“Hard Mary”), plus reprints from A. Merc Rustad (“How to Become a Robot in 12 Easy Steps”), Charles Yu (“NPC”), Caroline M. Yoachim (“Stone Wall Truth”), An Owomoyela (“Travelling Into Nothing”), Seanan McGuire (“Frontier ABCs: The Life and Times of Charity Smith, Schoolteacher”), and David Barr Kirtley (“They Go Bump”).

On the fantasy side of the ledger, we’re featuring new work from Maria Dahvana Headley (“You Pretend Like You Never Met Me, and I’ll Pretend Like I Never Met You”), Cadwell Turnbull (“Jump”), Genevieve Valentine (“Abandonware”), Sam J. Miller (“Conspicuous Plumage”), and Kat Howard (“A Brief Guide to the Seeking of Ghosts”), plus we have reprints from Yoon Ha Lee (“The Coin of Heart’s Desire”), Theodora Goss (“Elena’s Egg”), Charlie Jane Anders (“The Super Ultra Duchess of Fedora Forest”), and Jeremiah Tolbert (“The Girl with Sun in Her Head”).

We’ve also got an array of nonfiction features, including a special celebration of our contributors’ and staff members’ favorite LIGHTSPEED stories of all-time, and then our novel excerpt this month is from Gene Doucette’s THE SPACESHIP NEXT DOOR.

BUY THE ISSUE

This special issue is available from our usual array of ebook formats and vendors, but is also available in a special trade paperback edition.

Our online edition includes the usual amount of fiction we publish—8 stories—but the rest of the special issue bonus content is exclusive to our ebook and trade paperback editions.

TL;DR Version

If you enjoy Lightspeed and Nightmare and my anthologies, our Patreon and Drip pages will be a way for you to help support those endeavors by chipping in a buck or more on a recurring basis. Your support will help us bring bigger and better (and more) projects into the world.

Why Patreon and Drip?

There are no big companies supporting or funding the magazines, so the magazines really rely on reader support. Though we offer the magazines online for free, we’re able to fund them by selling ebook subscriptions or website advertising.

While we have a dedicated ebook subscriber base, the vast majority of our readers consume the magazine online for free. If just 10% of our website readers pledged just $1 a month, the magazines would be doing fantastically well. So we thought it might be useful to have an option like Drip and Patreon for readers who maybe haven’t considered supporting the magazine, or who maybe haven’t because they don’t have any desire to receive the ebook editions—or who would be glad to pay $1 a month, but not $3 (the cost of a monthly subscriber issue of Lightspeed).

Though Lightspeed and Nightmare are separate entities, we decided to create a single “publisher” Drip and Patreon account because it seemed like it would be more efficient to manage just one page on each platform. Plus, since I sometimes independently publish works using indie-publishing tools (as described above), we thought it would be good to have a single place where folks could come to show their support for such projects.

But basically, we wanted to create a crowdfunding page where, if you enjoy my work as an editor, and you want to contribute a little something to help make it easier for us to produce more cool projects, then our Drip or Patreon will be the place to do that.

Drip is Part of the Kickstarter Family

Drip is similar to Patreon, but was created by Kickstarter, and thus uses the same login credentials and charging practices as Kickstarter does. So to pledge via Drip you don't need to create a new account; you'd just go there and login with your Kickstarter credentials and you're all set and ready to pledge.

Drip also has something called a Founding Member period at the start of your campaign. So anyone who becomes a backer during the first 30 days of our Drip (so, in this case, by March 30) is designated as a "Founding Member" and will always be labeled as such on Drip so long as you maintain your backing. It allows creators to keep track of who their early supporters were, so that down the line you can do special things to thank those folks and such.

What Do I Get Out of Being a Backer or Patron?

Well, you get the satisfaction of helping to usher the creation of cool new short fiction projects into the world! Plus, the more support we get, the better we can make the magazines and compensate our authors and staff. By becoming a supporter via Patreon or Drip, you help fund our growth and continued publication of two award-winning magazines. Of course, if you’re already one of our ebook subscribers (thank you!), you are already supporting us. This is for those who prefer to read the issues each month on our free websites, or wish to support our efforts more generally.

By becoming a supporter, you are also bestowed a title, such as Dragonrider, or Space Wizard, or Savior of the World and/or Universe, thus making you instantly the envy of all your friends.

Thank You!

If you’ve read this far, thanks so much. We hope you’ll consider becoming a backer on Patreon or Drip. Those URLs again are d.rip/john-joseph-adams and patreon.com/JohnJosephAdams.

Thanks in advance for your time. We look forward to hopefully being able to make the magazines—and my other publishing endeavors—even better with the support of people like you.

P.S.

Apologies if you get this note multiple times; I'm sure a lot of you backed more than one of the Lightspeed (and/or the Nightmare or the Help Fund My Robot Army) Kickstarters, but the only way we can communicate with y'all is via these updates, and there's no way to set it up so that all of you just receive this once. (We'll have to post a version to every campaign to make sure everyone receives the update.) We're going to stagger them out a bit so you don't get all of them on the same day, but still I can understand if that might be a bit of a bombardment overall, so we just wanted to apologize in advance.
tag:www.kickstarter.com,2008-10-09:FreeformPost/19463882017-07-25T15:20:49-04:002017-07-26T19:00:10-04:00Next DESTROY Project Now on Kickstarter: Disabled People Destroy Science Fiction!
Hello Backers!

Quick update for you regarding our Hugo Awards eligibility post last week.

In our original post, we indicated that WDSF/the Women Destroy projects (collectively) should be eligible for the Hugo Award for “Best Related Work.” We noted, however, that our eligibility status is unclear because unfortunately the Hugo Administrators have made it a policy of not ruling on eligibility prior to the nominations closing. But we’ve been in discussions with some folks “in the know” (including a former Hugo Awards administrator), and the consensus was that WDSF/the Women Destroy projects are NOT eligible for Best Related Work, or, indeed, any current Hugo Award category.

However, we did neglect to inform you of some other Destroy-related options that are definitely eligible for Best Related Work: All of the individual nonfiction pieces and essays that appeared in the three Destroy issues. We’ve got a list of them below, along with links to where you can read many of them online (if you’re a backer, though, of course, you’ve got ebooks containing all of this material).

We'll let you know about the various awards that might be in the running as the nomination cycles come up, but first up are the Hugo Awards--the most prestigious award in all of science fiction. And you know what? You can help choose the winners!

The 2015 Hugo Awards will be presented in Spokane, WA during Sasquan, the 73rd World Science Fiction Convention (Aug. 19-23). The Hugo Awards nomination period is currently open and closes on March 10, 2015.

Anyone who is or was a voting member of the 2014, 2015, or 2016 Worldcons by the end of the day (Pacific Time/GMT – 8) on January 31, 2015 is eligible to nominate. If you’re not already eligible to nominate and don’t plan to attend, you can purchase a supporting membership for $40, which gives you voting/nomination rights. Nominations may be submitted through the online ballot, available here. Note: You must have your membership by January 31 if you want to nominate works!

There are some other benefits to being a Worldcon supporting member other than just voting rights: Typically each Worldcon also assembles a "Hugo Voter Packet," which contains a large percentage of each year's nominated works, to help voters make an educated decision on what is the "best" in each category. And of course if you buy an attending membership, you get to attend Worldcon, which can be a lot of fun.

In any case, if you're not overly familiar with Hugos, we wanted to make it a little easier for backers to figure out the categories and rules. So here is a list of all of the people and works associated with the Women Destroy project, placed in their relevant award categories:

Novelette - from Women Destroy Science Fiction!

We've consulted with some people, who have had varying opinions, but ultimately it's a decision the Hugo Administrators will have to make, so we thought it best to leave it to them.

Now it's someone else's turn!
Hello backers!

This month marks the start of our next big project. Last year, as you know, we asked women to destroy science fiction, and they did — spectacularly — in our crowdfunded, all-women special issue, Women Destroy Science Fiction! (which went on to be named one of NPR's best books of 2014!).

Never ones to rest on our laurels, we thought it best to continue with that fine tradition and engage in a little more destructive behavior. Thus, this year’s anniversary issue will be Queers Destroy Science Fiction!, guest edited by Seanan McGuire.

As with Women Destroy Science Fiction!, we’ll be running a Kickstarter campaign in support of Queers Destroy Science Fiction!--in fact, we launched it earlier today, and as of this writing we're very nearly funded already!

Again, like last year, we’ll publish the issue whether the campaign is successful or not, but the campaign will determine how big and awesome we make the issue. If we raise just $5000, we’ll be able to make the special issue a special double-sized issue, and if we raise even more than that, we have a couple of really excellent stretch goals lined up as well. Our two biggest stretch goals are the same as last year: If we receive enough pledges, we’ll not only publish Queers Destroy Science Fiction!, we’ll also publish Queers Destroy Fantasy! and Queers Destroy Horror! special issues as well.

Joining guest editor Seanan McGuire will be a team of wonderful queer creatives, including Steve Berman (reprint editor), Wendy N. Wagner (managing editor), Mark Oshiro (nonfiction editor), Sigrid Ellis (flash fiction editor), Cecil Baldwin (podcast host), Paul Boehmer (podcast producer), Elizabeth Leggett (art director/cover artist), and more!

The Queers Destroy Science Fiction! Kickstarter campaign will run from today until February 16.
P.S. If you backed WDSF at the subscription level, or you otherwise have a subscription to LIGHTSPEED, good news: This year we're offering subscription EXTENSIONS as part of the campaign, so if you already have a subscription, we can just add another year or two onto your existing one. You can just select the regular subscription rewards from the rewards list and we'll sort everything out with the survey after the campaign ends.
tag:www.kickstarter.com,2008-10-09:FreeformPost/8625432014-10-01T15:53:34-04:002014-10-02T15:56:29-04:00Women Destroy Fantasy! and Women Destroy Horror!
