About

Thanks to all our backers! Unfortunately we didn't make our goal and will not be able to injection mold the Map Holder. We will still be selling the 3D printed version at a discounted price on our website here. We have been using these versions for the last year and they simply work awesome! We will also be setting up a store on Shapeways and will make sure to link on the product page at Life Ultralight. Thanks again and happy touring!

Make bike navigation easy! The Life Ultralight Bike Map Holder secures nearly any map or cue card and easily mounts to your bike in seconds.

  • Holds maps securely
  • Curved design prevents map flapping in the wind
  • Adjust, remove, or replace maps with one hand
  • Fits any handlebar or stem and easily mounts
  • Durable lightweight design
  • Low profile
  • Made in the USA

There are very few options to mount a map to the handlebars of your bicycle and the products out there fall short to say the least. After trying as many as we could and even the DIY methods available we decided to design a better system. The Life Ultralight Bike Map Holder is what we came up with. It's extremely simple to use and attaches to your bike in just a few seconds. Almost any map or cue sheet can be folded and inserted into the holder with one hand and adjusted while riding if needed. We designed the mount to hold the map securely in a way that prevents it from folding or flapping in the wind.

Together we have ridden over 30,000 miles bike touring (Check out our blog here) and we always carry a map! While GPS systems are great, you can't always rely on having a place to charge. Maps always work, but the mounting systems don't.

Our design is ready for manufacturing. We have a handful of printed prototypes that we have tested and adjusted and at this point we are really happy with the design. While the printed prototypes will work great, we would like to have the final product injection molded so they look cleaner and last longer. The initial molds, sample runs, final parts, Kickstarter fees, and shipping will cost $6,000 so we are turning to Kickstarter to help us get moving.

Right now we are using reusable zip ties to mount the map holder. We also have a design to use a removable rubber o-ring, similar to some bike computers. We plan to have both mounting options in the final product.

Why can we make it happen?

Joe Ruscito is the designer for this project. He has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and has been designing similar products for the past 6 years. Small product design, 3D printing, and injection molding is where most of his experience lies. Most recently, he worked for the Medical University of South Carolina designing spinal implants, surgical tools, and medical devices.

We are also supported by a team of extraordinary mentors including the design team at Distil Union (www.distilunion.com), who have launched many successful Kickstarter campaigns and Ryan Roberts (www.e1even.com) who has launched numerous products and services.

We can offer the map holder in a variety of different colors once we have the injection molds made. If backers have a color preference, you will be able to let us know in the post-campaign survey. We will pick the top colors at the end of the campaign.

The Life Ultralight Map Holder is the perfect map mount for your bike! Specially designed for foldable maps and cue sheets. Works great with The Adventure Cycling Association's touring map sets. We have thoroughly tested this map system on cross country bicycle tours and it performs much better than any other mount we have seen or tested!

We are seeking Kickstarter funding to help us cover the initial costs of machining injection molds, the first sample runs, parts cost to cover all backer rewards, and to cover Kickstarter/credit card fees which can be close to 10%. Please help us make the Map Holder a reality! Thanks to our backers for your support!

Risks and challenges

Every project runs the risk of unexpected problems and this one is no exception. However, considering this product is fairly simple and requires no assembly and has no moving parts the issues that could arise are limited. We believe we have done our best to minimize the risks involved and are well prepared to overcome any unforeseen issues. The project is very close to being manufactured and has been thoroughly tested. We simply need to get injection molds made.

The biggest source of problems lies in the first injection molded samples. There is a chance we encounter some molding problems which would likely be cosmetic. There is also a small chance we will need to adjust the design so that it can be molded easier. We have already discussed the project with an injection molder and the chances of this are very small. However, if this is the case we can easily adjust our files and molds to address the problem, but it could delay the delivery of the final products.
