Hello! My name is Lucy and I created a podcast called "Life on the Outside" - a monthly show about what it's like to return to society after decades of incarceration. In Season I, we hear from former lifers who must navigate a society that is in many ways, far more complex than the one they left decades earlier. When the stakes are this high, it takes one day at a time to find their footing again.
This podcast is very relevant to today's landscape in California. Recent changes in the state have made it possible for an increasing number of 'lifers' (people serving life-sentences) to return home. More and more people are paroling to the greater Los Angeles area to begin a transition back to society known as 'reentry'.
My goal is to raise $6,000 for Season II so we can dive deeper into this unique transition from prison to society. Stylistically, Season II will be different, following one man, Jack, who continues to build his life on the outside after 35 years in solitary confinement. To most, his life would appear normal, maybe even mundane, but there is still a darkness that is revealed in the passages and poems he reads from his time in solitary. In Season II we ask: How does one find inner peace after confinement?
I, Lucy, the host of this show, care a lot about the ways in which we heal ourselves and find inner peace. For the past five years I’ve traveled up and down the state of California co-facilitating a parole preparation workshop called ‘Insight.’ This work and the people on the inside have begun to feel like home to me and I am certain that I have found pockets of my own inner peace inside of prison, strange as that may seem. But peace itself can be fleeting; one day we may have it and the next day it's gone. In Season II, I'm curious to find out not only how we find inner peace, but how we hold on to it.
My experience in making this podcast is that many former lifers share their story with a humility and self-knowing that moves and inspires me more than anything I’ve personally encountered. What I hear and feel with people I interview is a peace within themselves that I too, seek. This is not to look over the struggle and deep pain that may still exist, but to dig underneath it and find the even deeper joy and light that exists within us all. This is why I make this podcast.
