Hi beloved comrades and supporters of LIES journal! And hello to anyone who is just finding out about us now! LIES journal is a place for the development and dissemination of ideas, histories, narratives, and expressions that analyze and attack the structures of hetero-normative white supremacist patriarchal capitalism. We value rigorous thought, depth of prose, strength of sentiment, truth of word. We value autonomous organizing, and strive to cultivate a space of feminist autonomy in and as LIES, standing in solidarity with struggles for radical autonomy. Check out volume I of LIES Journal HERE.
We’ve been amazed over the last year or so at the level of encouragement and excitement surrounding the first volume. The last year has seen many changes in our collective project; we all learned through a trial by fire what it takes to self-publish, self-edit, and distribute a journal through a non-hierarchical, collaborative process. We made errors, lost shipments, made contacts at bookstores, tabled at book fairs, had weekly meetings on the internet across multiple time zones; we worked hard and had fun.
We are truly appreciative of the initial seed money we were able to fundraise in order to print and distribute that first volume, as well as the continued interest. Our initial print run of volume I was an edition of 1,000 but we quickly sold out, and had to re-print. We’ve also tried to price our journal to be accessible rather than to make a profit. We typically sell copies for $5 - 10, which keeps it affordable for many of our readers. We also donate copies to help raise funds for grassroots political projects. However, this pricing model doesn't leave us with enough money to fund our next round of printing and we are quickly approaching our deadline for a finished volume II. Ideally, we would like to do a print run of 2,000 copies, which will cost at least $5,200. So once again we turn to you to help us to bring volume II to your hands, and the hands of many others. Here you can pre-order at a price just moderately above the selling cost of the journal (see the $15 and $30 bargain bin), and if you have some extra to spare, please consider donating more, for which you will be rewarded with some excellent LIES swag, designed by comrades of LIES and screenprinted by hand by the collective in collaboration with kazoostudios.
Risks and challenges
Working collectively on a long term project always involves many challenges, not the least of which is a looming financial one, but against a lot of odds, we've managed to make it to our sophmore issue!
In a recent email to some of our contributors, we wrote:
"as non-cis-men, and/or people-of-color, our voices are not respected in academia and the world at large, and oftentimes pushed to the sides. Rarely are we encouraged to write, to speak, to shout. We don't want that to happen. That's why we publish LIES. What you have to say is really important, and really crucial to VOL II."
And that speaks to a fundamental challenge in the project, which also might mean risks, for us, for our supporters-- nothing is taken for granted in this project, and every step of the way has been hard won. We hope you will join us.
