About this project
"Dance has been my freedom and my world. It has enabled me to go around, scale, bore through, batter down, or ignore visible or invisible social and economic walls. Dance is my medicine."
LIBERATION DANCE THEATER: is a Bay Area-based performance collective representing the voice of the arriving generation. Since 2007, LDT has been pushing the boundaries of cross-cultural aesthetics, addressing global themes such as economic marginalization, youth uprising, + identity politics, forging cultural exchange throughout Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala, + beyond,. All through the exuberance, soul, + visual prowess of DANCE.
PROJECT: We are currently building new work in the Bay Area to perform at APAP at the Ailey City-Group Theater, NY, January 7. This is an exciting step for us! This is our chance to represent the Bay + potentially reach wider audiences. The showcase features dance companies nationwide + serves as a platform for presenters to view up + coming work. However, we need your help to get us there safe + sound! Artist fees, airfare, housing, costumes, + production costs are still needed! Join the movement + be apart of Liberation's next chapter in dance history!
NEW WORK: Using a multiple-narrative format, 'Guerra' is based on choreographer Jacinta Vlach's journey dancing, traveling, + teaching throughout Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, + Guatemala. Although each region possesses its own unique beauty; the legacy of post colonial trauma, raw passion, fervent spirituality, + resilience of the people are inextricably linked. Set to the music of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, 'Guerra' ties these worlds together through an authentic mix of Afro-Brazilian, Street, Contemporary movement, + sheer physicality.
